Other Soulslike games feel different from Elden Ring because they usually concentrate difficulty inside a tighter route, a narrower combat toolkit, or a more committed character build. Elden Ring keeps the genre’s deliberate timing, dangerous mistakes and demanding bosses, but gives you more ways to change the situation: you can explore elsewhere, upgrade multiple weapons, use stealth or ranged attacks, break enemy stance, summon help, ride past threats and return when you are stronger.

The distinction is not simply that one game is easier. It is about how much control the game gives you over the problem, and when it asks you to solve it.

The core difference at a glance

“Soulslike” describes a family of design patterns rather than a fixed ruleset. A peer-reviewed 2024 overview, The Soulsification of video games, identifies recurring traits such as precision-oriented combat, intricate level design, meaningful consequences for mistakes, indirect storytelling and an ominous atmosphere. Those traits can be combined in very different proportions.

Comparison axis Common Soulslike pattern How Elden Ring expands it
Combat commitment Deliberate attacks, evasion, resource management, punish windows and enemy-pattern learning The same timing foundation plus stance breaks, stealth, mounted movement, ranged attacks, status effects, Spirit Ashes and multiplayer summons
Checkpoints and death A rest point restores key resources, respawns many ordinary enemies and determines the next run after death Sites of Grace are spread through a huge world with fast travel and alternate approaches, often allowing you to bypass a difficult route
World structure Frequently an interconnected map, hub-and-level layout or carefully controlled sequence An open overworld, optional regions, multiple entries to legacy dungeons and freedom to change progression order
Build flexibility Anything from broad stat allocation to loot-heavy systems, skill trees or a deliberately fixed protagonist Many weapons, attributes, spells, Ashes of War, equipment, Spirit Ashes and upgrade materials that support experimentation
Managing difficulty Usually requires mastering the local encounter and route before progress is possible Exploration, leveling, respecs, new equipment, summons, stealth and returning later provide additional solutions

These are tendencies, not rules every game follows. Checkpoint distance, stamina systems, respec costs and build restrictions must be checked for each individual title.

How Soulslike combat usually works

Commitment and punish windows

Traditional Soulslike combat asks you to commit to an animation. A heavy swing, recovery roll, spell cast or healing action can leave you exposed. The reliable strategy is to observe an enemy, identify the end of its attack sequence, spend your opening and retreat before the next pattern begins. Button mashing is usually punished because every action has a time and resource cost.

The 2024 academic overview describes bosses as encounters built around learning patterns and adapting strategy. It also treats death as a central mechanic, commonly involving the loss and attempted recovery of an in-game currency. That learning loop is why a failed attempt can still be useful: you discover an attack cue, a safe distance or a recovery window even when the boss survives.

Elden Ring keeps the timing test but widens the answer set

Bandai Namco’s official description says Elden Ring still requires “a good sense of timing, observation, and patience to master.” The game does not remove animation commitment or enemy pattern recognition. Instead, it gives you more ways to alter the matchup before and during the fight.

  • Stance breaks: Repeated heavy attacks, charged attacks, jump attacks and selected skills can damage an enemy’s stance and create a critical-hit opening. Hidetaka Miyazaki has described this as related to the posture idea used in Sekiro, although the two games do not have identical combat systems.
  • Stealth: Crouching, sound management and attack positioning can let you remove or bypass targets rather than start every encounter in open combat.
  • Ranged and status options: Sorceries, incantations, bows, consumables and effects such as bleed or frost can change the distance and pacing of a fight.
  • Mounted combat: The mount changes spacing and gives you an option for some open-world encounters that a closed arena cannot provide.
  • Summons: Spirit Ashes and multiplayer allies can divide an enemy’s attention, creating opportunities that do not exist in a solo duel.
  • Weapon and skill changes: Swapping a weapon or its Ash of War can change reach, damage type, stance pressure and the timing of your safest attacks.

Miyazaki summarized the intended learning process in a 2022 PlayStation Blog interview: “We want players to use their cunning, study the game, memorize what’s happening, and learn from their mistakes.” In a more tightly authored Soulslike, that lesson may mean mastering one weapon-and-evasion loop. In Elden Ring, it can also mean recognizing that a different route, damage type or ally makes the original problem unnecessary.

Checkpoints, death and the runback

What the classic checkpoint loop does

The familiar bonfire model performs several jobs at once. Resting normally refills health and healing charges, saves your position, and respawns most ordinary enemies. Defeated foes may also restore the resources needed to try again, while death can drop a recoverable currency at the location of failure. The checkpoint therefore creates a decision: spend what you have now, or push farther and risk losing it.

The visual object changes between games. The academic overview uses Dark Souls bonfires, Nioh shrines and Hollow Knight benches as examples of different implementations that preserve some checkpoint logic. A bench in a 2D exploration game is not mechanically identical to a shrine, but both can define where recovery, enemy resets and death recovery begin.

Four rules to record when comparing games

  1. Resource restoration: Note exactly what returns at rest: health, potions, ammunition, mana, special charges or nothing beyond a save point.
  2. Reset behavior: Check whether ordinary enemies, elite enemies, traps, doors or environmental hazards return after resting.
  3. Death penalty: Identify what is dropped, whether it can be recovered, and what happens if you die before reaching it.
  4. Attempt distance: Measure the practical route from the checkpoint to the boss or failed encounter, including doors, elevators and unavoidable enemies.

Why Elden Ring often feels less punishing between attempts

Sites of Grace are distributed across a very large map, and fast travel links many discovered locations. A failed boss attempt can still require a run, but the open geography often gives you another option: approach from a different entrance, ride around a dangerous group, activate a closer grace, or leave the area entirely. You may also reach a stake or other nearby restart point in places where the map provides one.

Bandai Namco presents the game as one in which players can tackle challenges in their preferred order. Miyazaki likewise describes a design that lets players explore at their own pace and return to a roadblock later. That reduces the chance that one blocked encounter consumes an entire session, but it does not make the boss’s attack patterns optional. The game moves some of the difficulty from repeated travel into decisions about where to go next.

Do not generalize this into “every Elden Ring boss has a short runback” or “every Soulslike has a punishing one.” Checkpoint spacing and boss-door placement vary by area and by game.

World structure changes the way difficulty is delivered

Controlled routes in many Soulslikes

A compact Soulslike may use a hub connected to several levels, an interlocking map with shortcuts, or a mostly linear sequence. Designers can tune enemy placement, healing access and upgrade timing because they know which route most players will take. When a boss blocks the next region, learning that encounter is often the immediate requirement.

Elden Ring distributes obstacles across an open world

Elden Ring combines an open overworld with legacy dungeons that have more traditional corridors, loops and shortcuts. You can find an optional cave, map fragment, mine, quest area or field boss, then return to the main route later. Several legacy dungeons also have multiple approaches, so the order in which you encounter enemies and rewards is not always fixed.

This structure changes the meaning of failure. If a boss is too strong, you can search for upgrade materials, improve a flask, collect a new spell, learn an Ash of War, raise attributes, or simply practice against other enemies. The player is still solving combat problems, but route selection becomes part of the solution.

Build systems: specialization versus experimentation

“Soulslike build” does not mean one system

Games influenced by Dark Souls can use very different progression models. One may offer strength, dexterity, intelligence and equipment slots; another may focus on randomized loot and stance trees; another may give you a fixed protagonist with a limited set of upgrades. Some make changing direction cheap, while others expect a long-term identity.

Compare a build system using five questions:

  • How many weapons, skills or classes are viable?
  • How expensive is it to change attributes or equipment?
  • Are upgrades permanent, reversible or tied to disposable loot?
  • Does progress depend on finding specific items?
  • Can one character test several play styles, or does the game encourage a narrow role?

Why Elden Ring encourages more testing

Bandai Namco emphasizes that the game is generous with weapon-upgrade materials compared with older Souls games, where a player might have enough resources to fully develop only one or two weapons. Exploration also supplies weapons, Ashes of War, equipment, flask upgrades, recipes and Spirit Ashes.

That generosity matters because experimentation has a lower opportunity cost. You can maintain a heavy weapon for stance pressure, carry a ranged option for flying targets, test a status setup, or change an Ash of War without abandoning the character entirely. Attribute requirements and upgrade tiers still impose limits, and some powerful choices require significant investment, but the overall system supports more viable loadouts than a deliberately narrow game.

Respec availability also affects the feeling of freedom. When a game permits a character to reallocate attributes after meeting a specific requirement, an early investment becomes less permanent. When it does not, every level-up carries more strategic weight. Treat this as a title-specific comparison rather than a genre-wide rule.

How players manage difficulty in each design

The useful question is not “Which game is objectively harder?” The available evidence does not establish a controlled difficulty ranking across Soulslikes and Elden Ring. Instead, compare the number and timing of tools that can change an encounter.

Tool Effect on the problem What to check in another Soulslike
Route choice Lets you postpone a boss, gather resources or approach from another direction Are alternate areas available, or is the next boss mandatory?
Upgrades Raises damage, survivability or resource capacity How often do materials appear, and are they shared across weapons?
Summons Divides enemy attention and creates attack windows Does the game offer AI allies, co-op or neither?
Specialized mechanics Stealth, posture damage, elemental effects or parries can bypass a normal exchange Are these core systems, optional tricks or absent?
Respec and equipment changes Allows a character to respond to a resistant boss or unfamiliar area Can you reverse stat choices, and what does that cost?

A compact game may offer fewer alternatives but tune each one more tightly. Elden Ring offers a broader decision space, so a player who is stuck can often change the conditions instead of perfecting the same attempt indefinitely.

Where the named games fit

Dark Souls

Use Dark Souls as the reference point for bonfire checkpoints, interconnected level design, recoverable death currency and deliberate melee combat. It is a useful baseline, not a claim that every later Soulslike copies all of its rules.

Nioh

The academic overview identifies shrines as Nioh’s checkpoint adaptation. The series is also a useful example of how Souls-derived risk can coexist with more loot-driven progression and stance-focused combat. Exact mechanics differ by entry, so comparisons should name the specific Nioh game being discussed.

Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight shows that Soulslike influence is not limited to a 3D role-playing template. Its benches provide a visually distinct rest-point example inside a 2D action-exploration game. The comparison is about checkpoint and death design, not identical combat or progression.

Sekiro

Miyazaki’s comparison between Elden Ring’s stance breaks and Sekiro’s posture system illustrates how a mechanic can migrate between games without making their combat equivalent. Sekiro centers posture, deflection and a fixed protagonist, whereas Elden Ring combines stance pressure with broad equipment and build choices.

What player-experience evidence can and cannot tell you

The 2024 Springer Nature study analyzed 993,932 Steam reviews while examining player experiences of Souls and Soulslike games. That figure describes the study’s review dataset; it is not a sales, ownership or popularity statistic. Large-scale review analysis can reveal recurring themes in how players describe challenge, failure and progression, but it cannot produce a controlled ranking that proves one title is harder than another.

For a personal comparison, record your own attempts: how often you changed equipment, how far you traveled after death, whether an upgrade solved the problem, and whether you chose to leave and return. Those observations explain why two games with similarly demanding bosses can feel entirely different.

A practical way to compare a new Soulslike with Elden Ring

  1. Play the opening area without over-leveling. Note the basic attack, dodge, block, parry and resource loops.
  2. Rest once and observe the reset. Record which enemies return and which resources refill.
  3. Attempt the first major roadblock. Measure the distance from the last checkpoint and identify the death penalty.
  4. Test one alternate solution. Try a different weapon, ranged option, status effect, summon or route if the game offers it.
  5. Check progression cost. Determine whether new equipment competes for scarce materials and whether attributes can be changed.
  6. Compare agency, not only deaths. Ask whether failure taught you a pattern, exposed a route, or suggested a new build.

This method separates execution difficulty from structural friction. A game may demand the same precision as Elden Ring while giving you fewer ways to postpone, reconfigure or bypass a problem.
