Sleep deprivation can make it harder to concentrate, remember information, make sound judgments, regulate mood, and communicate clearly at work. The effects vary: not everyone experiences the same symptoms, and fatigue can have causes beyond lost sleep. A further complication is that people may not recognize how much their performance has declined.
How lack of sleep can affect work performance
Sleep loss can undermine several abilities people rely on to do their jobs safely and effectively. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says sleep-deficient people may have slower reaction times and make more mistakes. CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) also lists reduced attention or concentration, limited short-term memory, and impaired judgment as possible effects of fatigue. NHLBI: Sleep Deprivation and Deficiency; NIOSH: Fatigue and Work
- Attention: It may be harder to stay focused on a task or notice important details.
- Memory: Holding information in short-term memory can become more difficult, complicating tasks that require keeping track of instructions or several steps.
- Judgment and reaction: Decisions may be less reliable, responses may be slower, and errors may be more likely.
These are possible effects, not a checklist that every tired worker will experience. They also do not establish that sleep loss is the cause of a particular mistake or incident.
Possible effects on mood
NIOSH’s training for nurses working shifts and long hours describes possible mood effects including irritability, anxiety, depression, confusion, fatigue, and sleepiness. Its examples come from a specific occupational training context, not a measurement of how often these effects occur across all workers. They should not be taken to mean that sleep deprivation gives every worker a mood disorder. NIOSH training: Functioning (Continued)

Sleep loss can also affect how people process emotions and social cues. A 2020 review of research on sleep and organizational behavior discusses possible links to workplace tension and miscommunication; it is a research synthesis, not an estimate of how frequently those outcomes happen. Pilcher and Morris, “Sleep and Organizational Behavior,” 2020
How communication can change
In the same NIOSH nurse training, examples of communication difficulty include fumbling for the right word, saying the wrong word, and misinterpreting what another person says. These kinds of slips can make routine exchanges less clear, especially when a job depends on accurate instructions or coordination. The training identifies possible effects; it does not establish their prevalence among workers generally. NIOSH training: Functioning (Continued)

Why a worker may not notice the impairment
Someone affected by sleep deprivation may not accurately judge how impaired they are or recognize a decline in their performance. NIOSH also emphasizes that people differ in how they respond to sleep loss. For that reason, feeling capable is not always a reliable measure of attention or judgment. NIOSH training: Common and Critical Misconceptions and Individual Differences
Fatigue at work is not always caused by sleep loss alone
NIOSH’s workplace guidance, dated July 14, 2026, associates fatigue with nonstandard schedules that disrupt or shorten sleep, including night shifts and extended hours. It also identifies stress, demanding tasks, and hot environments as possible contributors. Fatigue can therefore have more than one contributing factor, and a tired worker’s difficulties should not automatically be attributed to sleep deprivation alone. NIOSH: Fatigue and Work

What employers and workers can do
NIOSH recommends that employers and workers work together to reduce fatigue risks. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommends workplace education on fatigue, sleep health, sleep disorders, and strategies for alertness. For safety-sensitive work, it recommends a fatigue-risk management system that includes screening for sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea. These are professional recommendations, not a statement that a particular legal requirement applies to every workplace. NIOSH: Fatigue and Work; AASM: Insufficient Sleep and Work Performance Health Advisory
- Education: Help staff understand fatigue, sleep health, sleep disorders, and alertness strategies.
- Fatigue-risk management: In safety-sensitive roles, use a structured approach to fatigue risks, including the AASM-recommended consideration of sleep-disorder screening.
- Shared attention to risk: Treat fatigue as a workplace concern for employers and workers to address together, rather than relying only on an individual’s self-assessment.
The AASM advisory reports estimates from a 2017 RAND analysis of about 1.23 million U.S. working days lost annually and up to $411 billion in economic losses attributed to insufficient sleep. Those are estimates reported by the advisory, not new measurements made in 2019. The advisory also cites 2014 U.S. data, published by CDC in 2016, indicating that more than one third of U.S. adults slept less than seven hours per night; that figure describes the cited data, not a current estimate.
