Sifu starts its protagonist at age 20. In the standard aging system, each time you choose to rise after dying, your age increases by the current death-counter value: the first death adds one year, the next adds two, then three, unless you reduce the counter. Aging lowers maximum health while increasing offensive power; it does not make your abilities weaker. You can lower the counter, but the standard system does not let you regain years.
What the death counter means
The pendant revives the protagonist after death, but each revival comes at the cost of age. The counter tracks how many years the next revival will add. If it has not been reduced, the first death adds one year, the second adds two, and the third adds three. For example, if your counter is 3 when you die, rising adds three years. Reducing the counter before another death makes that next age increase smaller; it does not undo years already added.
How age changes combat
Age shifts the balance between survival and damage: maximum health decreases while offensive power rises. Sloclap’s Felix Garczynski described it this way: “Aging will not make you weaker, but it has a slight impact on your abilities: as you get older, you will trade maximum health for offensive power.” In practical terms, older age means less room to absorb mistakes, balanced by stronger attacks.

How to manage age and the counter
Reduce the counter before another death
Shrines provide ways to lower or reset the death counter, and defeating certain enemies, including chapter bosses, can reduce it. These actions affect the counter, not the protagonist’s current age. When possible, reducing a high counter before a risky stretch limits how many years the next revival costs.
Finish a chapter to reset the counter
Completing a chapter resets the death counter, but the protagonist keeps the age reached at the end of that chapter. The next chapter therefore starts with a fresh counter, not a younger character.

Replay earlier chapters to improve your carry-over age
Each completed chapter provides a save point at the age you reached. You can continue from that point or replay a chapter to improve your performance and the age carried into later progression. Replay can improve the age you carry forward; it is not a way to reverse age within the same run.
What happens at very high age
The pendant eventually stops being able to revive the protagonist, triggering game over. EIP Gaming’s aging-system guide, published in February 2022, places the final-death condition at age 70 or above. Treat that precise threshold as a guide-reported rule rather than a guarantee for every current version or difficulty; the developer’s explanation confirms the eventual game-over condition but does not give a specific age.

What carries over after death or game over
Ordinary death and game over have different consequences. Shrine upgrades and skills unlocked during a run are not lost on an ordinary death, but game over removes unlocked skills and upgrades. The game lets you unlock skills from the death screen, at the Wuguan between missions, and at shrines. You can spend additional experience to make a skill permanent so it is available at the start of a new run; EIP reports that a skill becomes permanent after five total purchases.
Chapter progress has its own persistence: completed chapters create save points at the age reached, and you can replay them. Sloclap also says the detective board retains collected clues and story details, discovered shortcuts, and hidden rooms after game over.

Check your difficulty’s aging rules
The counter pattern described above is the standard system, not necessarily universal across difficulty settings. A Steam Community guide by JAG, updated March 2, 2026, reports that Student difficulty adds one year per death and offers a shrine option to reduce age by five years, while Disciple uses the default counter-based pattern. This is community-authored guidance, not official patch documentation. Check the current in-game difficulty rules and shrine options before relying on those details.
