It is not interchangeable with Cornwall’s former horizontal air-launch operation or with UK sites focused on suborbital flights, testing or development. As of the latest status in the cited UK Space Agency reports, SaxaVord was preparing for a planned 2026 launch—not reporting a completed orbital launch.
UK launch sites at a glance
The UK Space Agency, Civil Aviation Authority and Department for Transport’s 2023 guide describes sites with different launch modes and intended roles. The table distinguishes those plans from current readiness and completed launch history.
| Site | Location and launch mode | Intended role or evidence | Readiness and history |
|---|---|---|---|
| SaxaVord | Lamba Ness, Unst, Shetland; vertical launch | Intended for polar and sun-synchronous orbits, as well as orbital and suborbital missions. | Has a spaceport licence and range-control licence. CAA records list vertical-launch operator licences for Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA), Skyrora and HyImpulse. UK Space Agency reporting describes preparations for a planned RFA launch in 2026; this is not evidence of a completed launch. |
| Space Hub Sutherland | A’ Mhòine peninsula, Sutherland, mainland Scotland; planned vertical launch | Planned access to polar and sun-synchronous orbits. The 2023 guide lists a payload capacity of less than 500 kg. | Orbex paused construction in December 2024 and intended to launch first from SaxaVord. Orbex entered administration in February 2026. These developments mean the site should not be treated as an active, ready orbital service. |
| Spaceport Cornwall | Cornwall Airport Newquay; horizontal air launch from a carrier aircraft | The 2023 guide lists 300 kg to low Earth orbit as payload capacity. | Virgin Orbit’s January 2023 mission was the UK’s first orbital launch attempt from UK soil, but it failed to place its satellites in orbit. The CAA register identifies Virgin Orbit as defunct; its former service is not an available current launch option. |
| Spaceport 1 | Scolpaig Farm, North Uist, Outer Hebrides; vertical | The guide describes a suborbital role. | A suborbital flight site is not the same as an orbital launch site. |
| Glasgow Prestwick | Prestwick, South Ayrshire; planned horizontal launch | The guide lists several intended orbital inclinations and names Astraius as the planned operator. | Planned departures in the guide do not establish a completed launch or a currently available service. |
| Spaceport Machrihanish | Campbeltown, Argyll; air-launch, vertical-launch and high-altitude-platform concepts | The guide lists multiple possible modes. | Development and research activity should not be read as evidence of routine orbital launches. |
| Spaceport Snowdonia | Llanbedr, Gwynedd; horizontal, vertical and rail concepts | The guide describes flight-test heritage and range-control capabilities via Aberporth. | Test heritage and listed launch concepts do not establish routine commercial orbital service. |
What sets SaxaVord apart?
Vertical launch from Shetland
SaxaVord’s defining combination is a vertical-launch model and a location on Unst, the northernmost inhabited island in Shetland. The UK Space Agency guide identifies polar and sun-synchronous orbits among the site’s intended destinations. That makes it a different proposition from Cornwall’s carrier-aircraft approach, rather than a like-for-like replacement for it.
Licences indicate permission, not a launch record
The CAA’s licence register lists a SaxaVord spaceport licence issued to Shetland Space Centre Limited on 15 December 2023, as well as range-control licensing. It lists vertical-launch licences for RFA, issued 14 January 2025; Skyrora, issued 24 July 2025; and HyImpulse UK Limited, with an issue date of 1 October 2026. Licence scope and issue dates describe regulatory permissions; they do not confirm that a vehicle has flown successfully or that a launch date is guaranteed. The UK CAA’s account of the first vertical-launch approval also explains that launch licensing involves mission-specific considerations.

The UK Space Agency’s 2025–2026 annual report describes RFA launch preparations for a planned 2026 first launch. Preparations and a planned date are not a completed orbital launch. The UK’s history of attempted launches from its soil must therefore be distinguished from successful delivery of a payload to orbit.
How SaxaVord compares with Cornwall
The clearest comparison is launch method and outcome. SaxaVord is designed for rockets launching vertically from the ground. Cornwall’s January 2023 mission used horizontal air launch: a rocket was carried by an aircraft before release. That mission was an orbital launch attempt from UK soil, but the satellites did not reach orbit.

The payload figures in the UK Space Agency’s 2023 guide are not a fair basis for ranking the sites. It lists 300 kg to low Earth orbit for Cornwall and less than 500 kg for Sutherland, but those are guide descriptions, not independently verified current vehicle performance. The guide does not give an apples-to-apples SaxaVord payload figure. A payload number depends on the launch vehicle and mission as well as the site, so these figures do not show that one spaceport can carry more than another.
Where Sutherland fits—and why its status matters
Sutherland is a useful comparison because, like SaxaVord, it was planned as a vertical-launch site with access to polar and sun-synchronous orbits. Its development status changed, however. The UK Space Agency reported that Orbex paused construction in December 2024 and intended to launch first from SaxaVord; the agency’s 2025–2026 annual report says Orbex entered administration in February 2026. The guide’s plans and payload description remain useful for understanding the original concept, but they should not be mistaken for a currently ready launch service.

Other UK sites serve different purposes
Suborbital flights and flight testing
Spaceport 1 is described in the official guide as suborbital. That role does not establish access to orbit. Spaceport Snowdonia’s flight-test heritage and range-control capabilities via Aberporth likewise do not amount to routine commercial orbital launches.
Concepts and planned operations
Glasgow Prestwick’s planned horizontal missions and named operator, Astraius, are guide-listed plans rather than proof of a completed or currently available service. Machrihanish has air-launch, vertical-launch and high-altitude-platform concepts, but those possibilities should be distinguished from routine orbital operations. Across the sites, a concept, development activity or planned departure is not equivalent to a flown mission.

How to judge launch-site readiness
For a meaningful comparison, separate regulatory permission from operational evidence. The CAA’s register identifies licences and their scope; government guidance explains the licensing framework. Neither by itself demonstrates successful launch history, a working commercial schedule or a specific payload capability.
- Launch mode: Determine whether the site is intended for vertical rocket launch, carrier-aircraft horizontal launch, suborbital flight or testing.
- Mission: Check whether the stated destination is orbit, a particular orbital inclination or a suborbital trajectory.
- Regulatory status: Confirm whether the site and launch operator hold relevant licences, and distinguish a licence from a completed mission.
- Operational evidence: Look for construction status, launch preparations and completed outcomes. A planned date is not a launch result.
- Payload figures: Compare only figures stated on a consistent basis for a specified vehicle and mission. The guide’s values for Cornwall and Sutherland do not provide a direct SaxaVord comparison.
Has the UK launched a rocket into orbit from UK soil?
The January 2023 Cornwall mission was the first orbital launch attempt from UK soil, but it failed to place its satellites in orbit. The sources cited here do not report a successful orbital launch from UK soil. SaxaVord’s planned RFA launch in 2026 must not be described as completed.
