Robots recover from a failed task by detecting a mismatch between what should have happened and what sensors show, diagnosing the likely cause, taking a safe corrective action, and checking that the correction worked before continuing. The details depend on the robot and the failure: recovering a dropped object is not the same problem as correcting a force error or regaining control of a quadrotor.

What recovery means

Recovery is a feedback loop, not simply a second attempt. A robot must notice the deviation, work out what state it is actually in, choose an appropriate response, and verify that it can safely proceed. If the system cannot establish a recoverable state, it may need to stop or request human help.

There is no single recovery method or recovery rate that applies to robots generally. Research systems address particular tasks, failures, sensors, and platforms, so their results are not directly comparable as a universal measure of reliability.

How robots detect that a task has gone wrong

A robot can monitor signals tied to its current action rather than treating every sensor reading as equally relevant. For example, a task may depend on detecting a grasp, reaching a target pose, or staying within a force range. A system can also check selected postconditions after an instruction; otherwise, a missed result may go unnoticed until a later step fails. NASA’s 1989 description of a robot testbed explains this task-sensitive monitoring and event-based approach in “Monitoring Robot Actions for Error Detection and Recovery”.

A 2025 manipulation framework organizes fault handling around detecting pose and wrench errors before diagnosis and recovery. The FAU record describes experimental validation on a seven-degree-of-freedom Franka-Emika robot; that is evidence for the specific system and setting, not a general result for all manipulators. See the FAU CRIS record.

How a robot diagnoses what happened

Detecting an error does not explain it. A failed grasp, an object that moved unexpectedly, and a later planning problem can produce a similar symptom at the current step. Diagnosis therefore benefits from combining sensor readings with the task plan and a record of recent actions and events.

The NASA testbed builds an event trace from observations and tracks objects and workspace locations. That history helps the system reason about where an error occurred and what state the task is now in, rather than assuming that the robot and workspace still match the plan.

What recovery actions a robot can take

The appropriate correction depends on the failure and on whether the robot remains in a safe, controllable state. Common research approaches include local retries, motion or force replanning, reset skills, and separate learned policies that return the robot to a state where its regular controller can continue.

Approach How it is used Example and scope
Retry or local correction Repeat or adjust a step when the robot has enough evidence that another attempt is safe. FLARE’s CVPR 2026 repository listing describes retries for deviations. This summarizes the listing, not an independent assessment of its results: CVPR 2026 Open Access Repository.
Task-level replanning Add corrective steps or return to an earlier task state when the current plan no longer fits the workspace. The NASA testbed describes appending recovery steps and returning to the original task when recovery succeeds.
Reset skill Restore a usable state after a more disruptive failure, such as an object being dropped or a collision. The FLARE listing describes a reset pipeline for state-breaking failures; the claim is limited to that listing’s description.
Learned local recovery policy Use a separate policy to move from a failure state to one where the normal controller can resume. RecoveryChaining addresses multi-step manipulation and reports transfer from simulation to a physical robot.
Human handoff Stop or ask an operator to intervene when the robot cannot safely or confidently recover. The NASA testbed describes operator messages when recovery fails.

Why verification and safety matter

A corrective movement is not proof that recovery succeeded. The system needs new evidence that the required task conditions hold and that the robot is in a state from which the next action can safely start. In NASA’s testbed, successful recovery states lead back to the original task; if a recovery attempt fails, another plan can be generated, and the system can also ask an operator to intervene.

Recovery must begin while it is still physically possible. A robot that recognizes danger only after losing the control authority or time needed to respond may be unable to return to a safe state. The RAYA project describes incorporating a learned recoverability margin into an optimal controller and changing task priorities as that margin declines. Its authors summarize the issue this way: “A robot can predict failure and still be unable to prevent it.” See the RAYA project page.

What reported results can—and cannot—tell you

RAYA’s authors report 7,200 simulation episodes per controller across quadrotor and autonomous-vehicle benchmarks. They also report a 35-gram Crazyflie quadrotor deployment and 40 combined hardware flights under wind. In those trials, the project page says RAYA completed 10 of 10 six-cycle missions while each of three baselines failed every trial. These figures describe the authors’ particular experiments; they do not establish a general robot recovery rate, and the combined trial context does not mean that 40 flights belonged to each system.

To compare recovery approaches, look at the failure being addressed, the sensor signals used, how the system diagnoses the cause, what correction it attempts, how it verifies success and safety, and whether the evidence comes from simulation, lab hardware, or deployment. A result for one robot, task, and failure mode should not be treated as a benchmark for another.
