A remake substantially reinterprets an earlier Resident Evil game; a remaster updates an existing version’s presentation or options while keeping that version as its foundation. The distinction is about more than sharper graphics: camera, controls, puzzles, encounters, areas, and story can show how much has been rebuilt. The key wrinkle is that Resident Evil HD remasters the 2002 remake of the 1996 original—it is not simply a high-resolution edition of the 1996 game.

At a glance

Name Treatment What distinguishes it
Resident Evil (2002) Remake of the 1996 game The version on which the later Resident Evil HD remaster is based.
Resident Evil HD Remaster of the 2002 remake Updated presentation and options; the 2002 remake remains its foundation.
Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster of a separate 2002 prequel Updated visuals and sound, control choices, and Wesker Mode.
Resident Evil 2 (2019) Remake of the 1998 game New perspective, puzzles, and encounters.
Resident Evil 3 (2020) Remake of the earlier game Reworked locations and a new dodge mechanic for Jill.
Resident Evil 4 HD Remaster High-definition edition of the earlier experience.
Resident Evil 4 (2023) Remake of the 2005 game Modernized gameplay, reimagined story, and new graphics.
PS5 releases of Resident Evil 2 and 3 Platform upgrades Updates to the 2019 and 2020 remakes, not new remakes of the PlayStation originals.

The labels describe how each release relates to an earlier version, not a simple ladder of “old,” “new,” or “better.” A remaster can improve presentation and offer control options, while a remake can retain familiar characters and story elements yet change the way the game is played. An upgrade is different again: it updates an already released version for another platform.

What makes a Resident Evil game a remake rather than a remaster?

A remake uses an earlier game as a starting point but rebuilds or reinterprets meaningful parts of the experience. A remaster carries forward an existing version and updates how it looks, sounds, or can be configured. These are useful practical categories, not rigid labels based on a single visual change.

For example, changing resolution alone does not establish that a game is a remake. Consider the wider scope: Does it use a different camera or control scheme? Have puzzles, enemy encounters, locations, or story sequences changed? Or is the recognizable game intact with improved presentation and options?

Capcom described Resident Evil 2 as a reimagining, with a new perspective as well as changed puzzles and encounters. Producer Tsuyoshi Kanda said the goal was to create “an all new version of the game,” rather than merely remake it. The PlayStation Blog interview with the creators, published December 13, 2018, makes clear why the remake label means more than a visual refresh in this case.

Use several clues, not just the graphics

  • Camera and viewpoint: A changed perspective can reshape navigation, aiming, and how encounters unfold.
  • Controls and mechanics: New movement or combat systems may make play feel different even when familiar characters and locations remain.
  • Puzzles and encounters: Altered solutions, enemy placements, or encounter designs point to changes beyond presentation.
  • Areas and story: Reworked locations or a reimagined storyline are strong evidence of reinterpretation.
  • Visuals and sound: Improvements matter, but by themselves they do not tell you whether the underlying version has been remade or remastered.

It helps to treat these clues as a group rather than make one feature decisive. A changed control option can appear in a remaster without making it a remake: Resident Evil HD, for instance, offers a choice between original-style and newer movement controls but remains based on the 2002 remake. Conversely, the 2019 Resident Evil 2 combines a new over-the-shoulder perspective with modified puzzles and encounters. The breadth of the changes—not the presence of any one option—is what makes the second example a reimagining.

Why is Resident Evil HD a remaster of a remake?

The original Resident Evil launched in 1996, and Capcom remade it in 2002. The later Resident Evil HD release is based on that 2002 remake, so the most precise description is “a remaster of a remake.” It updates that remake’s presentation and adds options; it does not go back to the 1996 game as its direct foundation.

That relationship is easy to miss when a storefront shortens a product name to “Resident Evil HD” or “Resident Evil 1 HD.” The word “HD” describes the later treatment, not which earlier edition it builds on. The PlayStation Blog announcement of the HD release, published October 9, 2014, identifies its basis in the 2002 game and describes updated visuals and sound, display options, and a choice between original-style and newer movement controls.

This distinction matters if you want to know which design you will encounter. A remaster can preserve the particular remake’s structure and feel even as it improves presentation or provides different ways to control the character. The name of the oldest game in a series is not enough to identify the edition’s underlying version.

Put another way, “remake” and “remaster” can describe two different links in the same chain. The 2002 release remade the 1996 game; the HD release then remastered the 2002 version. So calling Resident Evil HD a remaster is accurate, and calling its underlying game a remake is also accurate. The descriptions refer to different stages, not competing claims about a single release.

Which Resident Evil games are remakes, remasters, or upgrades?

For the major examples in this comparison, check the year and the game’s underlying release. The same numbered entry can have more than one treatment, while a platform upgrade can update a remake without becoming a new remake itself.

Resident Evil 0 HD: a remaster of a separate prequel

Resident Evil 0 is a separate 2002 prequel, not another edition of the first game’s remake. Its 2016 HD release remasters that prequel, with updated visuals and sound, classic or newer controls, and Wesker Mode. Capcom’s January 19, 2016 announcement of the release and physical PS4 collection distinguishes the two HD games: the collection includes both Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil HD.

This is a useful comparison because it shows that the word “HD” does not mean “remake,” nor does it identify a game as part of another game’s remake history. Resident Evil 0 HD updates a separate prequel; Resident Evil HD updates a remake of the first game. Both are remasters, but their underlying games differ.

Resident Evil 2 (2019): a remake of the 1998 game

The 2019 game is a remake, not a straightforward resolution upgrade. Capcom cites its RE Engine presentation, a new over-the-shoulder perspective, changed puzzles, and modified encounters. Those changes affect how the game is played and experienced, not just how it is displayed.

The year is especially helpful when the title is abbreviated: “Resident Evil 2” can refer to the 1998 original or the 2019 remake. In a product listing or discussion, the date disambiguates which release is meant. The remake’s altered perspective, puzzles, and encounters explain the treatment more clearly than the shared title alone.

Resident Evil 3 (2020): a reimagining of the earlier game

Capcom describes the 2020 release as reimagined. The PlayStation preview details reworked areas of Raccoon City and a new dodge mechanic for Jill. Those are changes to environments and play, consistent with a remake rather than a presentation-only remaster.

These examples also show why a remake need not change every aspect of its source to qualify. Familiar setting or characters do not settle the question. What matters is that this version changes important parts of the environment and gameplay, rather than only improving the presentation of the earlier release.

Resident Evil 4 HD and Resident Evil 4 (2023): two different treatments

Resident Evil 4 HD is the earlier experience remastered in high definition. Capcom described its 2011 HD release as the game remastered in high definition. The 2023 Resident Evil 4 is a remake of the 2005 game: Capcom describes modernized gameplay, a reimagined storyline, and new graphics. “HD” and the year are practical ways to distinguish these editions when the listing title is abbreviated.

The contrast is a direct example of the difference in scope. The HD edition preserves and updates the earlier experience; the later remake reinterprets it. If you are deciding between them, the useful question is not simply which one is newer, but whether you want the earlier version with a high-definition presentation or the 2023 version’s modernized gameplay and reimagined story.

Names alone can be misleading here. A recent PlayStation promotion listed “Resident Evil” separately from “resident evil 4 (2005),” illustrating why checking the year and product description is safer than relying on a shortened title. A promotion, however, does not establish lasting availability or a current price.

PS5 releases: upgrades to remakes already released

The PS5 releases of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 are platform upgrades to the 2019 and 2020 remakes. Capcom’s 2022 account lists visual, audio, and controller additions. These updates do not turn the releases into fresh remakes of the original PlayStation games; they update the newer remakes for another platform.

That distinction can be stated as a sequence: the 2019 and 2020 games are remakes of earlier entries, and their PS5 releases are upgrades of those remakes. “Upgrade” describes the platform relationship; it does not replace the original classification of the underlying games. The platform-specific additions are not evidence of a second remake of the 1998 or earlier Resident Evil 3.

How can you identify the edition you are about to buy?

Start with the underlying game and release year, then confirm the platform and exact product contents. A familiar title alone can hide meaningful differences between a remaster, a remake, and an upgrade.

  1. Read the full title and year. Check whether the listing identifies a year such as 2005, 2019, or 2023, or explicitly calls itself an HD release. If it gives only a franchise number or a shortened title, do not assume which version it means.
  2. Find the original release it is based on. Ask whether the product updates a specific existing edition or rebuilds an earlier game. For instance, Resident Evil HD traces to the 2002 remake, while Resident Evil 4 (2023) reinterprets the 2005 game.
  3. Look for descriptions of gameplay changes. References to a new camera, mechanics, puzzles, encounters, environments, or story help distinguish a remake from a presentation update.
  4. Confirm the platform and format. Check the platform listed, whether the item is physical or digital, the regional version, and whether the product is an individual game or a collection. A title appearing in a promotion is not proof of current availability or a particular edition’s contents.
  5. Check upgrade details separately. If you already own a game, verify the current platform store’s upgrade eligibility and terms for your exact edition and region. The historical announcement of an upgrade does not establish current eligibility or purchase terms.

These checks are useful whether you are comparing a boxed edition with a digital listing or trying to identify a game in a sale. First establish the release year and underlying version; then read the platform, region, format, and contents. A bundle title can name more than one game, while an upgrade listing may refer to a version you already own. Do not infer those details from a familiar franchise number.

The most reliable comparison is side by side: underlying release and year; extent of rebuilding; camera and controls; changes to puzzles, encounters, areas, or story; presentation improvements; and platform or edition. If a product description only emphasizes higher definition, that alone does not prove a remake. If it calls out changes to gameplay and story, those details help establish a broader reinterpretation.

Which version should you choose?

Choose by the kind of experience you want, not by treating either label as an automatic quality rating. A remaster is the closer fit if you want the earlier version’s design with updated presentation or options. A remake is the better match if you want a substantial reinterpretation of an older game.

Before deciding, compare the aspects that affect play most: viewpoint and controls, then puzzles and encounters, followed by changes to locations and story. A remake may preserve recognizable characters or scenarios while changing how you move through them. A remaster may offer useful control options without changing its underlying design into a new game.

There is no universal answer to which category is preferable. Someone drawn to an earlier version’s structure may value a remaster’s continuity; someone curious about a different perspective, revised mechanics, or reimagined story may prefer a remake. That is a preference about scope and familiarity, not a claim that one treatment is objectively superior.

For shoppers seeking both HD releases discussed here, Capcom described a physical PS4 Resident Evil Origins Collection containing Resident Evil 0 and the Resident Evil HD remaster. That historical bundle detail does not establish present stock, price, condition, or availability in any region. Check the exact listing before buying.

The collection is a concrete option to look up if you want those two HD releases together, but its name and historical announcement are not enough to verify an offer today. Confirm that a listing is the PS4 physical collection, inspect the regional version and condition, and make sure its contents match what you want. No current price or stock level can be inferred from the original launch information.

The PlayStation Blog announcement identifies the HD release as based on the 2002 remake. The important distinction is that it is not simply the 1996 original with sharper graphics.

Are the PS5 versions of Resident Evil 2 and 3 new remakes?

No. Capcom’s 2022 account describes visual, audio, and controller additions for PS5 releases of the 2019 and 2020 games. Those are platform upgrades to the remakes, not new remakes of the PlayStation originals.

Does Resident Evil Origins Collection come with a digital code or only discs?

Capcom’s January 19, 2016 announcement describes a physical PS4 disc collection containing Resident Evil 0 and the Resident Evil HD remaster. It does not establish the contents of every regional or later listing. Verify the format and included games on the specific product page before purchasing.

Does a higher-resolution release automatically count as a remake?

No. Resolution or other presentation improvements alone do not establish a remake. Compare the camera, mechanics, puzzles, encounters, areas, and story to judge whether the underlying experience has been substantially reinterpreted.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A remake reinterprets meaningful parts of an earlier game; a remaster updates an existing version’s presentation or options. Resident Evil HD remasters the 2002 remake, while the 2019 Resident Evil 2, 2020 Resident Evil 3, and 2023 Resident Evil 4 are remakes. PS5 releases of the 2019 and 2020 games are platform upgrades to those remakes.
