Hitscan and projectile describe how a shot reaches its target, not how the weapon reloads. A hitscan rifle can swap a detachable magazine, and a projectile launcher can use the same system—or load one round at a time. Reload downtime is set by magazine capacity, reserve ammunition, feeding method, animation timing and interruption rules. Projectile weapons add a separate delay after firing: the projectile must travel, and the shooter may need to lead the target or compensate for gravity.
Hitscan and projectile are different layers of weapon behavior
What a hitscan shot does
A hitscan weapon evaluates a line from the muzzle (or another firing point) and determines what that ray intersects at the instant of the shot. NeoFPS describes this directly: “Hitscan uses a raycast to detect what a shot hits instantaneously.” Because there is no simulated bullet object moving through the level, the target does not need to be led for travel time, and the shot does not follow a ballistic arc.
That instant evaluation does not mean the weapon fires continuously or reloads instantly. The game can still impose a fire-rate delay, recoil recovery, bolt cycle, magazine swap, chambering step or any other action before the next shot.
What a projectile shot does
A projectile weapon creates a separate object or simulated entity. NeoFPS summarizes the distinction as: “A projectile travels over time until it hits something.” During that interval, the target can move, the projectile can be intercepted, and the projectile can be affected by speed, gravity, drag or collision rules chosen by the game.

Photon Fusion’s sample implementation illustrates the same split: hitscan weapons use raycasts for hit evaluation, while projectile weapons spawn standalone projectile objects that travel and perform simulation-tick raycasts. The firearm logic still handles magazine state and reloading independently.
Why the distinction matters
The category error is treating projectile travel as a form of reload. Reloading is ammunition feeding; travel is what happens after a shot has been launched. A projectile can be in flight while the weapon is ready to fire again, or the weapon can be unable to fire because it is empty while an earlier projectile is still moving. Those are separate timers that may overlap.
What actually determines reload downtime
Every weapon has a state describing what is loaded, what remains in reserve and what actions are allowed. The following properties—not the hitscan/projectile label—determine how long you are vulnerable between firing sequences.
Recommended Free Tools
| Reload factor | What it controls | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Loaded capacity | How many rounds the weapon can hold before it needs feeding | How many shots are available before the next reload? |
| Reserve ammunition | The inventory pool used to refill the weapon | How many complete reloads remain, and does the weapon consume a whole magazine or individual rounds? |
| Reload duration | The time from reload start until the weapon can fire again | Is the published value for a dry reload, a partial reload or both? |
| Feeding method | How ammunition enters the weapon | Is a detachable magazine swapped, or are rounds inserted one by one? |
| Chamber state | Whether a round is already chambered during a magazine change | Does the last loaded round remain available, or is an additional chambering action required? |
| Interruption rule | Whether the player can stop reloading and keep the rounds already inserted | Can you fire immediately after cancelling, and is progress retained? |
Epic’s Fortnite Weapons Primer uses the same conceptual separation: “Magazine Size is how many rounds a weapon can hold”; “Reload Time is how long it takes to recharge a weapon when ammo is out, measured in seconds”; and magazine ammo is what is loaded in the weapon while reserve ammo is what the player has in inventory and uses to reload. Those definitions apply whether a game resolves the shot by raycast or by a traveling projectile.
Reload patterns found in FPS weapons
Detachable-magazine reloads
A detachable-magazine sequence removes one container and inserts another. The animation is usually a discrete, timed state: the weapon becomes unavailable, the old magazine is removed, a replacement is attached, and the action ends when the game marks the weapon ready. Some games also model a chambering step or grant a bonus round when the old magazine was not empty.
Both hitscan assault rifles and projectile submachine guns can use this pattern. Their reload speed can differ because designers assign different timings, because one weapon has a different animation, or because the chamber and magazine rules differ—not because one uses a raycast.

Individual-round or shell-by-shell loading
Tube-fed shotguns, revolving launchers and some bolt-action or grenade-style weapons accept one round at a time. The game inserts a round, updates the loaded count, and repeats until the capacity is reached or the player stops the sequence.
This pattern creates a useful interruption property: a player may cancel after one or more rounds and fire with the partial load. The trade-off is that filling an empty weapon can take longer than a single magazine swap, especially when the game requires a separate closing, pumping or cycling action.
Hybrid and staged reloads
Some weapons combine methods. A launcher might load individual projectiles but use a detachable cassette, or a rifle might swap a magazine and then require a bolt cycle. For comparison, record each stage separately: the first moment a shot can be fired, the moment the weapon is fully topped up, and whether the player can interrupt between stages.
Dry versus partial reloads
A dry reload begins with no usable round in the weapon. A partial reload starts while ammunition remains loaded. A game may shorten a partial reload, preserve a chambered round, or use the same animation for both. Never compare a dry reload value from one weapon with a partial value from another and call the result a class-wide difference.
Do projectile guns reload differently from hitscan guns?
There is no universal rule. The implementation evidence consistently treats projectile creation and ammunition feeding as separate systems. Valve’s Source documentation exposes ammunition and magazine properties alongside a Reload action, while describing hitscan and projectile weapons as separate firing implementations. Photon Fusion likewise keeps magazine handling and reload logic in its firearm code while changing how the shot is simulated.
In practice, you can encounter all of these combinations:

- A hitscan rifle with a detachable magazine and a discrete reload animation.
- A hitscan shotgun that inserts shells one at a time and can be interrupted.
- A projectile rifle with a detachable magazine.
- A projectile launcher that loads one grenade, rocket or canister at a time.
- A projectile weapon that fires from a magazine but also applies a chambering delay after the swap.
The weapon’s fictional construction may suggest a loading method, but the game’s scripts and balance values decide it. A visually similar firearm can have different reload behavior in two games, and two unrelated weapons can share identical reload state machines.
How to compare two weapons without mixing the timers
Use the following procedure in a training range, replay, or game documentation. It separates player downtime from projectile travel so a comparison answers the question you actually care about.
- Record loaded capacity. Note the number of rounds available before the weapon enters an empty state. Also note whether a chambered round is counted separately.
- Record reserve ammunition. Check the inventory amount and whether the reload consumes a full magazine, a fixed number of rounds or only the amount needed to fill the weapon.
- Identify the reload trigger. Does the sequence start only when empty, on a manual reload command, or automatically when the magazine is depleted?
- Classify the feeding method. Mark it as detachable magazine, individual-round loading, staged or hybrid. Do not infer this from the projectile/hitscan category.
- Measure dry and partial behavior separately. Start with zero loaded rounds, then repeat with one or more rounds remaining. Record when firing becomes possible in each case.
- Test interruption. Cancel at several points. Check whether inserted rounds remain, whether the old magazine is lost, and whether an extra chambering step is required before firing.
- Measure time to first available shot. Use the moment the game accepts a firing input, not the end of an animation that may continue after the weapon is usable.
- For projectile weapons, record flight properties separately. Note projectile speed, gravity or drop, collision behavior and whether the target can move before impact.
- Compare the engagement window. Ask how many shots you can fire before reloading, how long you are unable to fire, and how much additional lead or prediction the projectile requires after the reload ends.
| Comparison question | Hitscan observation | Projectile observation |
|---|---|---|
| When is a hit evaluated? | At the firing event through an immediate raycast | After the projectile reaches the target or another collision point |
| Does the shot need target leading? | Not for travel time; aim still has to account for target motion during your reaction and fire-rate delay | Usually yes, based on projectile speed and target movement |
| Can gravity alter the path? | Not as a traveling bullet path unless the game adds a special rule | Potentially; the projectile simulation may apply gravity or another trajectory model |
| What determines reload downtime? | Magazine, reserve, feeding, timing and interruption rules | The same factors |
| Is there a universal reload-time advantage? | No; values are configured per weapon and game | No; values are configured per weapon and game |
Reload completion is not the same as hit completion
Consider a projectile weapon that becomes ready immediately after inserting a magazine. You can launch a new round while an earlier round is still in flight. If the first projectile takes time to arrive, damage confirmation may appear after the weapon has already fired again or started another reload. This can make the weapon feel slower to confirm hits even when its reload is short.

A player deciding whether to reload behind cover should therefore track two independent intervals:
- Weapon downtime: the period during which the weapon cannot launch another shot.
- Impact latency: the period between launching a projectile and its collision or damage event.
Only the first interval is reload time. The second affects accuracy, feedback and the timing of follow-up decisions.
Why projectile travel changes what happens after a reload
Leading a moving target
With a projectile, aim at the position where the target will be when the projectile arrives, not necessarily where it is when you click. The required lead grows with target speed and distance and shrinks as projectile speed increases. The reload system does not calculate that lead for you; it only determines when another launch is possible.

Accounting for gravity or drop
If the simulation applies gravity, a projectile fired at a distant target may need elevation above the apparent aim point. A weapon can use a fast, nearly flat projectile or a slower arcing one while sharing exactly the same magazine and reload code.

A projectile can strike a wall, shield or other object after launch even if the target was exposed at the firing moment. Hitscan evaluation normally resolves the line immediately, so later movement of the target or cover cannot change that already-completed raycast. This difference affects when to begin a reload: with projectiles, a launched round may still be capable of producing damage while you are reloading, but it may also be intercepted before arrival.

NeoFPS scripting reference
NeoFPS explicitly defines hitscan as an instantaneous raycast and a projectile as an object that travels over time. These definitions describe hit evaluation, not magazine architecture, which is why they cannot be used to predict reload length.
Fortnite Weapons Primer
Epic’s primer names magazine size, reload time, magazine ammunition and reserve ammunition as distinct weapon properties. Treat those properties as data points when reading a weapon description; none is implied by the word hitscan or projectile.
Valve Source documentation
Source weapon scripts expose ammunition and magazine properties and provide a Reload action. The same documentation distinguishes hitscan and projectile implementations, demonstrating that firing mode and feeding state are configurable independently.
Photon Fusion sample
The sample separates raycast hit evaluation from standalone projectile simulation while retaining magazine and reload handling in firearm logic. This is a practical example of the two-layer model: one subsystem launches and feeds the weapon, another determines how the shot reaches a target.

Bohemia Interactive reload documentation
Bohemia’s reload command selects a muzzle and magazine, can match a magazine from inventory and treats throwable muzzles separately. The explicit muzzle and magazine selection reinforces that reload behavior depends on the weapon’s feeding configuration and inventory state, not on whether a shot is evaluated by raycast or travels as an object.
Which matters more: reload speed or projectile travel time?
Choose the metric that limits the engagement you are actually losing. Reload speed matters when you run out of ready ammunition while exposed, when a failed interruption leaves you unable to fire, or when the weapon’s capacity is too small for the number of targets you face. Projectile travel time matters when targets are distant or moving, when hit confirmation arrives late, or when drop and interception make follow-up shots difficult.
A useful decision sequence is:
- If you die during the weapon’s reload state, prioritize capacity, a shorter first-shot reload and a reload you can safely interrupt.
- If shots miss because targets move before impact, prioritize projectile speed, predictable trajectory and practice leading; a faster reload will not correct the aim error.
- If you can launch several projectiles before reloading, exploit that overlap rather than waiting for each impact before acting.
- If the game gives no reliable timing display, compare the first-fire moment from a dry reload and a partial reload instead of comparing animation length by eye.
Common misconceptions and their corrections
- “Hitscan means instant reload.” Hitscan only describes instantaneous hit evaluation. Reload actions can be long, staged or interruptible.
- “Projectile weapons always load shells.” Projectile launchers can use detachable magazines, belts, cassettes or individual rounds.
- “A longer reload means the projectile is slower.” Reload timing and projectile speed are separate configuration values.
- “An empty reload is the only reload worth comparing.” Partial reloads can preserve a chambered round or allow an early shot, changing real combat downtime.
- “Damage feedback proves the weapon was ready sooner.” A projectile may report impact after launch; measure when the next firing input is accepted.
A practical checklist for weapon descriptions and patch notes
When a game changes a weapon, look for the exact property that changed. “Reload increased” is incomplete unless it identifies dry or partial state, magazine swap or per-round insertion, and whether the chamber is preserved. “Projectile speed increased” changes travel and leading but says nothing about reload downtime. “Magazine size increased” changes the number of shots before downtime and may alter reserve consumption, but it does not establish a new reload duration.

For a reliable comparison, write down capacity, reserve, reload start condition, feeding method, dry time, partial time, interruption behavior, first-fire timing, projectile speed, gravity and target-leading demand. That record lets you compare any two weapons—even from different games—without assuming that their hitscan or projectile labels dictate how they reload.
The bottom line
Hitscan versus projectile tells you how the game resolves a shot. Reload mechanics tell you how ammunition is fed and when the weapon becomes available again. Magazine size, reserve ammunition, reload duration, chamber state and interruption rules create reload downtime for both categories. Projectile weapons then add travel-time, lead and possible gravity considerations after the reload ends. There is no universal hitscan or projectile reload advantage; inspect the specific weapon’s state machine and measure time to the next available shot.
