A PS5 digital preorder is charged when you place it, adds a personal license to your PlayStation account, and can preload before launch if automatic downloads are enabled. The console still blocks play until the listed release time. A disc edition installs data from the disc but checks that disc whenever you start the game. Both formats can receive network updates, and refund eligibility depends on when you paid and whether the main download has begun.
What a PS5 digital preorder actually buys
PlayStation Store purchases are account entitlements, not transferable files. The PlayStation Terms of Service in force in March 2026 state: “When you order or purchase a product from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.” That license is attached to the purchasing PlayStation account and is what authorizes downloading and using the game under the applicable terms.

The same terms say you are charged at the time of the order even though some content may not be available until the listed release date. A preorder therefore creates two separate events: payment and access. Payment happens immediately; playable access remains locked until the publisher’s release time.

Where the preorder appears
After checkout, the preorder appears in your Game Library, on its PlayStation Store page, and in the PlayStation App. If you use more than one PS5, sign in with the purchasing account on the console you want to preload. Other accounts may be able to use the game through the console’s normal game-sharing settings, but the entitlement itself remains with the purchasing account.

How PS5 preloading works before launch
Preloading downloads the game files before release so you do not have to wait for the full download after the launch time. It does not bypass the release lock. The PS5 can store the files on its SSD, verify the entitlement at launch, and still refuse to start the game until the scheduled time.
Enable automatic downloads and rest-mode networking
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Go to Saved Data and Game/App Settings and open Automatic Updates.
- Enable Auto-Download and, if offered for your software, Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
- Return to Settings, choose System, then Power Saving and Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet, leave the console connected to power and the network, and put it in rest mode.
The download starts only when the preorder becomes available for preloading. Publishers choose the preload window, so two games releasing on the same day can become available for download at different times. A slow connection, insufficient SSD space, a powered-off console, or disabled rest-mode networking can leave the files waiting until you start the download manually.
What happens at the release time
At the announced release time, PlayStation checks the account entitlement and the game’s release restriction. A fully preloaded game can open almost immediately if no additional update is required. A title that has not finished downloading, or one that has a separate launch update, must complete those steps first. Changing the console clock does not legitimately unlock a preorder; the platform uses network-side release controls.
What a release-day patch is—and is not
A release-day patch is a software update delivered over PlayStation Network after the shipped game build was finalized. It can replace files, fix bugs, improve performance, add accessibility options, or prepare the game for online services. It is separate from the preorder preload and separate from the disc’s original data.
There is no reliable cross-game “average day-one patch size.” Patch size, whether an update is mandatory, and how much of the game works offline vary by title, publisher, region, and update version. Check the individual game’s release notes or the publisher’s support page for the requirement that applies to your copy.

Automatic update behavior on PS5
PS5 can download game and app updates while in rest mode. When you start a game, the console also checks for the newest available version. If an update downloaded automatically while the game was suspended, you can choose when to install it; installing may close the suspended game. For hands-off updating, keep the console online in rest mode and enable automatic installation as described above.
An update can be mandatory for online multiplayer, a specific mode, or the entire game, while another title may let you launch an older build offline. The console cannot tell you a universal rule for every release. If the game displays an “update required” message, install the listed update before troubleshooting the network or disc.

- Preload: the initial game package downloaded before the release time.
- Release-day patch: a later package that changes or adds files to the shipped build.
- Release lock: the account and platform control that determines when the game may start.
A fast preload does not guarantee a patch-free launch. Conversely, a large patch does not mean the preorder failed; it may reflect software changes made after the master build was prepared.
How a PS5 disc acts as a license token
A disc edition contains a shipped game build and installs much of that data to the console’s SSD. The disc is still required when you launch the installed game because the console checks that the physical media is present. In practical terms, the disc acts like a physical license token: the installed files are on the SSD, but the disc authorizes use.
This is different from a digital license. A digital copy is tied to the purchasing account and is not equivalent to a boxed copy that can be handed to another person. Physical ownership can normally involve lending or reselling the disc, subject to ordinary ownership rules and any restrictions that apply to a particular product.

Disc data and updates are separate
The disc contains the version pressed for manufacturing. Updates can replace or supplement that data after installation, so a disc does not guarantee that you are running the newest build. The first launch may work from the disc data alone, or the game may require an update for online play or a particular feature. Those requirements are title-specific.

PS4 discs upgraded to PS5 versions
Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 upgrade instructions make the validation rule explicit: after downloading the PS5 version, you can play the PS5 digital game by inserting the PS4 game disc. The PS4 disc must remain inserted whenever you play, and it must match the country or region of the account. An upgrade does not convert the disc into a standalone account entitlement.

Can you play without the day-one patch?
Sometimes, but there is no PS5-wide guarantee. The answer depends on the game. A disc may contain a playable launch build, while a digital edition may need to finish its initial download. Online modes commonly require the current version, and some publishers make an update mandatory before any launch. Other games allow offline access to some or all content on the shipped build.
To find the exact answer, read the game’s launch notes and observe the message shown when you start it. If the console offers Play Without Updating or an equivalent option, using it may leave online features unavailable and can produce a different experience from the supported release build. Do not assume that disconnecting the PS5 will bypass a required update; the game may simply refuse to start or limit its modes.

The following rules describe the current United States PlayStation Store cancellation policy. Local law and regional policies can provide different or additional rights.

Paid more than 14 days before release
You can generally cancel any time before release if the main product has not started downloading or streaming. “Main product” matters: a small bonus item or soundtrack download may not be the game itself, but starting the principal game download normally ends the standard cancellation route.
Paid 14 days or less before release
You can generally cancel up to 14 days after payment, again only if the main product has not started downloading or streaming. If release occurs during that window, the download-status condition still applies.
Why preload settings affect your refund
Automatic preloading is convenient, but once the main preorder download begins, the ordinary refund eligibility described above generally closes unless the product is faulty or another legal remedy applies. If you are undecided, disable automatic downloads for that preorder and avoid manually starting the main download until you are certain.
Use the cancellation request process for your account region and keep the order confirmation. If the game is defective, contact PlayStation Support; statutory consumer protections may apply even when the normal preorder window has passed.
Will PS5 discs stop working when consoles go digital-only?
No. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on July 1, 2026 that “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” The announcement also says the transition has no impact on games that were already released, or that will be released before January 2028, in disc format.

That is a production milestone, not an activation deadline for existing media. A disc you already own is not scheduled to stop authorizing its installed game merely because fewer new games are pressed. The practical limitation is hardware: a PS5 without a disc drive cannot read or validate a boxed edition, so a disc buyer needs a compatible drive-equipped model.
Troubleshooting preorder and update problems
The preorder is paid for but not downloading
- Confirm you are signed in to the PlayStation account that placed the order.
- Open Game Library and check the game’s download status rather than relying only on the Store page.
- Verify automatic downloads, rest-mode internet access, and available SSD space.
- Check whether the publisher has opened the preload window; payment alone does not make files immediately available.
The game is installed but still locked
- Check the announced release time and time zone.
- Reconnect the PS5 to the internet so it can verify the entitlement.
- Make sure you are using the purchasing account or the console’s configured game-sharing account.
- Do not delete the installation unless support instructs you; reinstalling rarely changes a server-side release lock.
A disc game asks for an update
- Leave the disc inserted and allow the console to check for updates.
- Read the game’s release notes to determine whether the update is mandatory or only needed for online features.
- If the disc is from a different country or region, check account and upgrade-region compatibility before expecting an upgrade entitlement.
- For a PS4-disc-to-PS5 upgrade, keep the PS4 disc inserted every time you play the PS5 version.
Which format fits your situation?
Choose digital when launch-day access matters most
A digital preorder is the better fit when you want to preload, avoid shipping delays, and switch games without changing discs. Plan around the refund rule: payment is immediate, and automatic preloading can remove the standard cancellation option once the main download starts.
Choose disc when you value physical control
A disc is useful when you want to lend or resell the physical copy, maintain access independent of an account purchase history, or buy for a PS5 that has a disc drive. Keep in mind that the disc must be inserted to play, patches may still be required, and a digital-only PS5 cannot validate it.

Both editions can receive network patches, and neither format guarantees a particular patch size or offline experience. Keep enough SSD space, enable rest-mode networking if you want automatic downloads, and consult the individual game’s launch notes for mandatory updates and mode availability.
