In ARC Raiders, proximity voice chat lets you speak with Raiders who are not in your squad. To shut off all in-game voice, open Settings > Audio > Voice Chat and set Enable Voice Chat to Off. If you want to keep voice available for your squad without broadcasting to nearby players, set Proximity Voice Chat Mode to Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk and do not activate its control.
What proximity voice chat does in ARC Raiders
Proximity voice chat is a local, in-match channel for communicating with Raiders outside your squad. It is designed for the social side of the game’s PvPvE encounters: you can speak to nearby players, negotiate, warn them, or try to persuade them to cooperate temporarily.
This is different from party voice chat. Party chat is intended for the members of your squad, while proximity chat reaches nearby Raiders who are not part of that squad. The game exposes separate proximity and party voice settings, including independent communication modes and volume controls.
Because proximity chat is tied to nearby encounters rather than your permanent party, it can be useful when you want to coordinate with another group for a short time. It can also be unwanted if you prefer not to hear strangers, do not want your microphone transmitted automatically, or are playing in a setting where open-mic audio is inappropriate.

The quickest way to turn proximity chat off
Use the global voice-chat switch when you want neither to transmit nor to hear in-game voice chat.
- Open Settings from the game’s menu.
- Select Audio.
- Open the Voice Chat section.
- Set Enable Voice Chat to Off.
This is the broadest disable control documented for the game. It is the appropriate choice if your goal is to stop other players hearing your microphone and to stop receiving in-game voice, including squad and proximity communication.
How to keep squad communication while stopping proximity transmission
You do not have to use an open microphone for proximity chat. The voice settings include three proximity modes:
- Open Mic: your microphone can transmit without a talk-button press.
- Push to Talk: proximity audio is sent only while you hold the assigned control.
- Toggle to Talk: you press the assigned control to turn proximity transmission on, then press it again to turn it off.
To avoid broadcasting while keeping the voice system available, go to Settings > Audio > Voice Chat, set Proximity Voice Chat Mode to Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk, and leave the proximity control inactive. This prevents accidental open-mic transmission while allowing you to speak when you deliberately use the control.
The exact result also depends on your separate party-chat configuration. Review the party and proximity mode fields independently rather than assuming that changing one changes the other.

Proximity chat settings and what each one changes
| Setting or configuration | Can you hear nearby Raiders? | Does your microphone transmit automatically? | What happens to squad communication? | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enable Voice Chat: Off | No in-game voice chat | No | In-game voice is disabled broadly | You want all in-game voice silenced |
| Proximity mode: Open Mic | Controlled by the voice system and proximity volume | Yes, without a talk-button press | Controlled separately by party settings | You intentionally want hands-free proximity communication |
| Proximity mode: Push to Talk | Controlled by the voice system and proximity volume | Only while the proximity control is held | Controlled separately by party settings | You want deliberate, moment-by-moment transmission |
| Proximity mode: Toggle to Talk | Controlled by the voice system and proximity volume | Only while the proximity toggle is active | Controlled separately by party settings | You want a persistent talk state without holding a button |
| Proximity Voice Chat Volume: 0 | Audio is reduced to zero in the game’s mix | Does not by itself guarantee that your microphone is disabled | Party voice settings are separate | You want an audio-level workaround while leaving voice enabled |
Setting proximity volume to zero is an audio-level workaround, not a documented replacement for the global voice switch. It addresses what you hear; it should not be treated as proof that your microphone cannot transmit. Use a non-open microphone mode, or turn Enable Voice Chat off, when preventing transmission is the priority.
Finding and changing the proximity voice control
The settings reference lists B as the default proximity push-to-talk key on PC. Key bindings can be changed, and defaults may differ on consoles or with a different control layout, so check the game’s current control assignments if B does nothing.

When using Toggle to Talk, press the assigned control once to begin transmitting and press it again to stop. If you are unsure whether a control is active, switch to Push to Talk and avoid pressing the assigned key while testing.
ARC Raiders also provides a selectable microphone input device, a selectable voice-chat output device, and a microphone test in its audio settings. These options matter when the game is using the wrong headset, controller microphone, speakers, or output device.
Choosing the right setting for common situations
You want complete silence from in-game voice
Turn Enable Voice Chat off. This is the only option in the documented settings that is intended as the broad, all-voice disable control.

You want to hear your squad but never send an open-mic signal to nearby Raiders
Leave voice chat enabled, set Proximity Voice Chat Mode to Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk, and do not activate the proximity control. Check the party-chat mode separately so it matches how you want to communicate with squad members.
You want to hear nearby Raiders but speak only when you choose
Use Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk for proximity chat. Keep the proximity volume at a level you can hear, then use the assigned control only for intentional responses.
You do not want to hear proximity chat but still want the voice system available
Set Proximity Voice Chat Volume to zero. Treat this as a listening workaround: it lowers the proximity channel but is not described as a guaranteed transmission block. Use Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk as well if you must prevent your microphone from being sent.
You are using a microphone for the first time
Select the intended microphone input in the voice settings and run the built-in microphone test. Then select the headset or speaker device you want for voice-chat output. A headset with a microphone is a practical setup because the game supports separate input and output device selection.
Console settings that can override in-game voice
Even when the game’s Voice Chat setting looks correct, console-level mute or privacy controls can prevent you from hearing or transmitting voice. Check the platform controls below if the in-game options do not behave as expected.

PlayStation 5: Game Base voice controls
On PlayStation 5, Embark’s troubleshooting instructions identify Game Base as a possible source of muted in-game voice. To review it:
- Press the PS button.
- Open Game Base.
- Enter Game Base Settings.
- Select Voice Chat Settings.
- Turn Mute Game Voice Chat off.
- Set Share Your Voice to Allow.
If Game Base is muting game voice, changing ARC Raiders’ audio menu alone may not restore communication. Recheck the game after applying these platform settings.
Xbox: communication and multiplayer privacy
On Xbox, review the communication permission at this path:
- Open Profile & System.
- Select Settings.
- Open Account.
- Select Privacy & Online Safety.
- Choose Xbox Privacy.
- Select View Details and Customize.
- Open Communication & Multiplayer.
- Set You can communicate outside of the Xbox network with voice & text to Everybody.
This platform permission is separate from the game’s proximity mode. If it is restricted, you may be unable to communicate with players outside the Xbox network even though ARC Raiders’ voice setting is enabled.
Troubleshooting: why you cannot hear or talk to nearby Raiders
Nothing in voice chat works
- Confirm Enable Voice Chat is on if you intend to use voice.
- Check that Proximity Voice Chat Volume is not set to zero when you are testing whether you can hear nearby players.
- Verify that the selected voice-chat output device is the headset or speakers you are actually using.
- On PlayStation 5, check Game Base’s Mute Game Voice Chat and Share Your Voice settings.
- On Xbox, verify the communication permission is set to Everybody at the documented privacy path.
Other players cannot hear you
- If Enable Voice Chat is off, turn it on before testing.
- Check whether proximity mode is set to Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk. In either mode, your microphone will not be sent until the proximity control is used.
- Confirm that the intended microphone is selected as the input device.
- Run the game’s microphone test to determine whether it is receiving input.
- On PlayStation 5, set Share Your Voice to Allow; on Xbox, allow communication outside the Xbox network with voice and text.
You hear squad members but not nearby Raiders
- Check the proximity volume separately from party voice volume.
- Make sure proximity chat is not muted by a zero volume value.
- Confirm that the players you are trying to hear are actually outside your squad; party voice and proximity voice are separate channels.
Your microphone is transmitting when you do not expect it
- Change Proximity Voice Chat Mode from Open Mic to Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk.
- Do not press or leave the proximity toggle active while testing.
- For a complete stop to in-game transmission, set Enable Voice Chat to Off.
Do you need a headset?
No specific headset model is required by the documented settings. The game supports a microphone input and a voice-chat output device, so a headset with an integrated microphone is a sensible option for keeping incoming voice separate from room audio and for speaking without relying on a controller microphone. Select the correct devices in Settings > Audio > Voice Chat and use the microphone test before entering a match.
A practical decision checklist
- Stop all in-game voice: Settings > Audio > Voice Chat > Enable Voice Chat > Off.
- Keep voice available but stop open-mic proximity transmission: choose Push to Talk or Toggle to Talk for proximity and leave its control inactive.
- Stop hearing proximity audio only: set Proximity Voice Chat Volume to zero, understanding that this is not a guaranteed microphone-disable switch.
- Find the PC proximity control: check the key-bind menu; B is the documented default PC proximity push-to-talk key, but bindings can change.
- Fix PS5 voice problems: Game Base > Game Base Settings > Voice Chat Settings, then turn off Mute Game Voice Chat and set Share Your Voice to Allow.
- Fix Xbox voice permissions: Profile & System > Settings > Account > Privacy & Online Safety > Xbox Privacy > View Details and Customize > Communication & Multiplayer, then choose Everybody for communication outside the Xbox network with voice and text.
What to remember about ARC Raiders proximity chat
Proximity voice chat is the channel for talking with nearby Raiders outside your squad, while party voice chat serves your squad. The global Enable Voice Chat switch is the direct way to disable sending and receiving in-game voice. If you want selective communication instead, Push to Talk and Toggle to Talk prevent an always-open proximity microphone. When console privacy or mute settings interfere, correct those platform controls as well as the game’s own audio menu.
