Pre-painting a Warhammer 40,000 terrain piece does not create a special rules category. The paint, colors and finish are cosmetic. Line of sight and cover are determined by the finished piece’s physical geometry, agreed footprint, height, and declared terrain type or keyword. If paint, basing material or flocking physically changes the silhouette, measure the completed model consistently; otherwise, treat a painted wall exactly like the same wall before it was painted.

This distinction matters because two players can look at the same attractive ruin and disagree about whether a model is visible, whether a window can be used as a firing lane, or whether the target receives the Benefit of Cover. Resolve those questions from the terrain’s shape and rules classification, not from its color scheme.

The core principle: appearance is cosmetic, geometry is rules-relevant

Games Workshop’s 2023 Warhammer 40,000 Core Rules describe battlefields as containing terrain features that models move over or around and that can “partially or fully block line of sight between models.” Nothing in that principle assigns a different status to painted, unpainted, factory-colored or weathered scenery.

Use the physical, finished terrain as the reference point. A painted exterior remains the same wall for visibility. A dark wash does not make the wall more opaque, and a bright color does not make it transparent. The exceptions are physical: a thick layer of basing paste may raise a wall, heavy flock may fill a gap, or a decorative addition may widen a section. If the change is large enough to affect a sightline or the boundary of the feature, the players should measure and classify the completed piece rather than relying on an earlier unpainted footprint.

Before deployment, agree on three things for every relevant feature:

  • the boundary or footprint at ground level;
  • the meaningful height and connected sections; and
  • the terrain type or keyword whose visibility and cover instructions apply.

Once those are fixed, paint does not receive a separate allowance or penalty.

How line of sight works around a painted ruin

Normal visibility uses the actual model and terrain

Where the terrain rules call for normal visibility, check what the models can actually see. Look from the attacking model toward the intended target and account for the wall, floor, rubble and other physical parts of the feature. A painted surface does not change that check. If the wall blocks the relevant view on the unpainted model, it still blocks it after painting.

Special terrain instructions can replace ordinary sight checks

Some terrain types supply a special visibility instruction. Ruins, Obscuring terrain and other keywords may change how models are seen compared with a simple window-by-window inspection. In those cases, follow the instruction for that terrain type even when the model contains visible windows or gaps. The keyword is a rules classification, not a description inferred from the color or realism of the paint.

Do not use the apparent darkness of an interior, a black-painted window or a scenic backdrop as evidence that the rules treat the opening as closed. Apply the written terrain instruction and the agreed footprint.

Windows and gaps are not automatically firing lanes

A window can matter when the applicable rules use true line of sight, but an opening does not automatically cancel a Ruins or Obscuring instruction. Conversely, painting a window shut does not automatically grant a new visibility benefit unless the paint or added material physically closes the opening and the players use that finished geometry. When a gap is borderline, state whether the gap is part of the measured feature and use the same decision for both players’ models.

How cover is determined

Cover is a rules outcome after you apply the terrain conditions; it is not an effect created by camouflage colors, realistic weathering or a pre-painted finish. If the model meets the feature’s cover conditions, the Benefit of Cover adds 1 to the saving throw made for a ranged attack. The 2023 Core Rules specify two important limits:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The bonus does not apply to invulnerable saving throws.
  • A model with a Save characteristic of 3+ or better cannot have the Benefit of Cover against an attack with AP 0.
  • Multiple instances of the Benefit of Cover do not stack.

For example, a painted wall and an unpainted wall with identical geometry produce the same cover decision. If the target qualifies, apply the +1 armour-save benefit subject to the AP and Save-characteristic restrictions above. If it does not qualify, no amount of dark paint or scenic detail creates cover.

A pre-deployment procedure that prevents disputes

Use this process whenever you add a new pre-painted ruin or change the basing on an existing piece.

  1. Place the finished feature on the table. Include its final base, rubble, flock and any permanently attached details. Do not measure the unpainted kit if the finished piece has changed shape.
  2. Mark the footprint at ground level. Use the outside edge of the base or a removable paper or acrylic template. If there is no base, agree which walls, rubble piles and connected sections belong to the feature.
  3. Record the height and connected sections. Note the tallest relevant level and whether separate-looking pieces are treated as one feature or several. Keep the decision consistent throughout the game.
  4. Declare the terrain type or keyword. Use the classification required by the mission, tournament packet or your agreed battlefield rules. Do not infer a keyword from the paint scheme.
  5. Check sightlines before models are deployed. View the likely firing lanes from tabletop height. Identify windows, open corners and solid panels that will produce normal visibility checks.
  6. Explain special visibility instructions. Tell both players how the declared terrain type handles models inside, behind or firing through the feature. If the mission uses a specific layout or packet, that instruction takes precedence over an improvised interpretation.
  7. Photograph or mark unusual boundaries. A small diagram, transparent template or table note avoids repeating the argument when the piece is moved or a different player takes a turn.

Footprint and height: the physical measurements that matter

Footprint clarity

The footprint is the agreed ground-level boundary, not the area visually suggested by a shadow or painted border. A base or template makes the boundary visible to both players. If the decorative rubble overhangs the base, decide whether that overhang is part of the feature before the game and use the same convention for similar pieces.

Height and vertical sightlines

Height affects which models can see over or into a feature and can matter for rules such as Plunging Fire. Games Workshop’s 2025 Chapter Approved Tournament Companion recommends varied terrain heights and treats height as important to those rules. A taller painted tower may therefore play differently from a shorter piece with the same colors and theme.

Connected sections and modular scenery

Modular walls, floors and corner pieces can look like one ruin after painting while functioning as separate features if their footprints or classifications differ. Decide whether they form one connected area or several discrete features. Record the decision before deployment; changing it after a unit moves creates an avoidable advantage.

Ruins, Obscuring terrain and other classifications

The following comparison keeps the decisions separate from paint and finish. The exact conditions come from the terrain rules and the mission or tournament packet being used.

Question What to use What paint does not change
Can the attacker see the target? Normal visibility through the physical feature, unless a special terrain instruction applies Color, shading and weathering do not alter visibility
Does a Ruins or Obscuring keyword alter visibility? The written instruction for that keyword and the agreed footprint A realistic interior or painted-black window is not a substitute for the keyword
Does the target receive cover? The feature’s cover conditions, followed by the +1 armour-save rule and its exceptions Camouflage and scenic detail do not create Benefit of Cover
Which parts count as the feature? The pre-declared ground-level boundary and connected sections A painted outline or shadow does not expand the footprint by itself
How much does height matter? The finished model’s physical height and the mission’s vertical rules Visual perspective and color contrast do not replace measurement

If the current event packet defines a standardized area-terrain outline or placement method, use that method instead of an informal table convention.

What the 2025 tournament guidance adds

Games Workshop’s 2025 Chapter Approved Tournament Companion explains that its layouts achieve substantial line-of-sight blockage and cover through the natural abstraction of line of sight within the rules for Ruins. It recommends varied terrain heights and emphasizes that height is important for rules such as Plunging Fire.

The practical lesson for pre-painted scenery is consistency. Two pieces can share a color scheme yet produce different games if one has a wider footprint, a taller upper floor or a different classification. Conversely, two visually different pieces can be interchangeable when their measured footprint, height and declared rules are the same. Tournament layouts should therefore be checked against the packet’s outlines and placement requirements, not judged by how realistic the paint looks.

Evaluating a pre-painted terrain piece before buying or using it

When comparing products or deciding whether to repaint an existing piece, assess the rules-facing characteristics rather than the finish alone.

Evaluation axis Questions to ask Why it matters in play
Footprint clarity Is a base supplied? Is the edge obvious? Can a paper or acrylic template be fitted? Both players can identify the same boundary without arguing over rubble or shadows.
Height How tall are the walls, floors and towers after assembly? Height affects exposed models, firing lanes and rules such as Plunging Fire.
Terrain classification Can the piece be used as Ruins, Obscuring terrain, woods, barricades or another agreed area type? The classification determines whether normal visibility or a special instruction applies.
Assembly and finish Are scenic parts securely attached? Can damaged or excessive basing material be removed? Loose or swollen details can change the physical silhouette during regular use.
Table compatibility Does its footprint fit the mission or tournament layout already in use? A beautiful feature is still a poor choice if it cannot be placed consistently within the agreed battlefield.

Repainting is normally a cosmetic decision. Modify the piece only with a clear plan for how any added walls, rubble or bases will be measured and classified afterward.

Common disputes and reliable fixes

“The dark interior should count as blocked.”

Color is not a visibility rule. Determine whether the feature uses normal visibility or a special terrain instruction, then apply that rule to the physical opening and declared footprint.

“The flock makes the ruin taller, so the old measurement still applies.”

Measure the completed piece if the added material materially changes its silhouette or height. Agree on one finished height and use it for both players.

“The window is open, so every model can shoot through it.”

That conclusion is valid only when the applicable terrain rules use ordinary visibility and the models have the required physical sightline. A Ruins, Obscuring or other special instruction may govern instead.

“Two layers of terrain should give two cover bonuses.”

The Benefit of Cover does not stack. Resolve the feature’s cover condition once and apply the single +1 armour-save benefit subject to the invulnerable-save and AP 0 restrictions.

“This piece looks like the event terrain, so it must use the same rules.”

Appearance is not classification. Match the event’s stated footprint, height, terrain type and layout instructions. If the packet does not assign the piece, agree on its classification before deployment.

A concise checklist for players

  • Use the painted, finished model as the physical reference.
  • Mark the footprint at ground level before deployment.
  • Agree on height and which sections are connected.
  • Declare the terrain type or keyword from the mission or packet.
  • Use true line of sight only where the terrain rules call for it.
  • Apply special Ruins, Obscuring or other visibility instructions when they apply.
  • Grant Benefit of Cover only when its conditions are met.
  • Remember that Benefit of Cover adds 1 to an armour saving throw, not an invulnerable save; it is unavailable to a 3+ or better Save against AP 0 and never stacks.
  • Use one consistent ruling for similar pieces for the entire game.

Pre-painted terrain is therefore fully compatible with fair Warhammer 40,000 play. The finish can improve readability and durability, but the rules outcome comes from the measured geometry and declared terrain rules agreed by both players.
