Pokémon save files, Pokémon HOME storage, Nintendo Switch Online, and your Nintendo Account are separate systems. Linking the same Nintendo Account to another Switch carries account-managed information such as eShop purchases and Nintendo Switch Online status, but it does not automatically copy every Pokémon game save. For most Pokémon titles, move the complete save with Nintendo’s System Transfer; use Pokémon HOME only to move compatible individual Pokémon. Save Data Cloud works only for compatible games, and Nintendo’s current support list excludes the major Pokémon Switch releases.

The safest order is to identify the exact game, check whether it supports Save Data Cloud, choose Cloud or System Transfer accordingly, and confirm the destination copy before deleting, resetting, or downloading over anything. Use the same Nintendo Account and the correct Switch user on every console, and the same account in both the Switch and mobile versions of Pokémon HOME.

Four separate layers control a Pokémon move

Confusion usually comes from treating “my Pokémon data” as one file. In practice, four layers are involved:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Game save data: the story progress, team, boxes, settings, and other progress stored by a specific Pokémon title on a Switch console.
  • Pokémon HOME: cloud-based boxes that can hold compatible individual Pokémon and exchange them with supported games. HOME is not a backup image of a game’s save.
  • Nintendo Switch Online: a paid service used for online play and, for compatible software, Save Data Cloud backups. It is not required for the Switch version of Pokémon HOME.
  • Nintendo Account and Switch user: the identity layer that enables eShop and other Internet features and associates purchases and service status with the account. It does not, by itself, copy every local save.

Nintendo describes the account relationship this way: “When you link a Nintendo Account to a user on the Nintendo Switch, you can use features that require the Internet, such as the Nintendo eShop and online play.” That statement concerns account-enabled features, not an automatic transfer of game data.

Which transfer method should you use?

Choose the method by asking whether you need the whole save or only selected Pokémon, then check the title’s cloud compatibility.

Transfer path What moves Save Data Cloud support Nintendo Switch Online required? Account and user requirement Does it reset the source? Can destination data be overwritten?
Save Data Cloud backup and download One game’s compatible save backup Only titles that support the service Yes, plus Internet access Destination user must be linked to the same Nintendo Account Normally no Yes. Downloading can replace the local save
Nintendo System Transfer Users, saves, and applicable system settings moved through Nintendo’s transfer process Works when the title does not support cloud backup No separate Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement is stated for the transfer itself Follow Nintendo’s current transfer flow and use the intended users and consoles The source may be erased or reset as part of the chosen transfer flow Yes. Verify the destination before accepting prompts
Pokémon HOME Eligible individual Pokémon between a supported game and HOME Boxes Not a game-save backup No for the Switch version of HOME Open HOME with the intended Nintendo Account; select the correct Switch user and game No HOME moves can change where an individual Pokémon resides; it does not create a second full save

Save Data Cloud: when it works and when it does not

Save Data Cloud is title-specific. A Nintendo Switch Online membership does not make every game eligible. Nintendo allows one cloud backup per software title for each Nintendo Account, and an Internet connection is required. On another console, the backup can be downloaded only by a Switch user linked to that same account.

Pokémon titles Nintendo lists as unsupported

Nintendo’s support list dated July 30, 2026 names these Pokémon games among software that does not support Save Data Cloud:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!
  • Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield
  • Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl
  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus
  • Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A

For these games, do not expect a cloud-backup option and do not promise that a Nintendo Switch Online subscription can restore the save. Use System Transfer or the game’s documented transfer procedure instead.

For a compatible title

  1. Join Nintendo Switch Online with the Nintendo Account that owns the save. The membership and an Internet connection are prerequisites for Save Data Cloud.
  2. On the source console, create or update the backup for the specific software title. There is only one backup slot for that title and account, so a new backup replaces the previous cloud copy.
  3. On the destination console, create or select a Switch user linked to the same Nintendo Account.
  4. Use the destination console’s Save Data Cloud controls to download the title’s backup. Read the overwrite warning: the download can replace the destination’s local save.
  5. Open the game and confirm the expected progress before removing or resetting the source console.

If the cloud option is missing, first verify the exact title and account. A missing option can be normal for an excluded Pokémon game; it is not necessarily a subscription or network fault.

System Transfer is the route for unsupported Pokémon saves

Nintendo’s System Transfer moves users and their saves between Switch-family consoles and is the supported route for Pokémon games excluded from Save Data Cloud. Nintendo’s transfer FAQ specifically says saves for software such as Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet can be carried over with System Transfer.

Prepare both consoles

  • Update both systems as far as Nintendo’s current requirements allow and connect them to power.
  • Sign in with the Nintendo Account associated with the source user. Linking the account on the destination is important, but linking alone does not move the save.
  • Keep the source console available until the destination save has been checked.
  • Decide which copy is authoritative if the destination already contains a save. A transfer or later download can overwrite local data.

Run the transfer

  1. Open Nintendo’s built-in System Transfer feature on the source and destination consoles.
  2. Choose the source and destination roles as prompted, then authenticate the Nintendo Account and select the users and data to move.
  3. Follow the on-screen transfer flow without powering off either system. The process can move the user and associated saves together.
  4. When Nintendo presents an erase, reset, or deletion warning for the source, do not accept it until the destination choice is correct and you understand what will remain on each console.
  5. Launch the Pokémon game on the destination and verify the trainer profile, story progress, party, and boxes. Only after that check should you reset, sell, or give away the source console.

The exact screens can change with system software and the Switch model, so use the current prompts shown by Nintendo rather than relying on an old button-by-button video. System Transfer is a console-data operation; Pokémon HOME is not required to carry out the save move.

What Pokémon HOME can and cannot do

HOME is designed for Pokémon management, not whole-save replication. On Switch, open Pokémon HOME, select Pokémon, choose the game you want to access, and then choose the Switch user whose save data should be opened. You can arrange eligible Pokémon between that game and HOME Boxes, subject to each title’s compatibility rules.

Use HOME when you need selected Pokémon

  • Move a compatible Pokémon from a supported game into a HOME Box.
  • Switch to another supported game and place compatible Pokémon into that game.
  • Keep HOME Boxes available across devices by using one Nintendo Account, rather than trying to duplicate a game’s save.

HOME does not preserve the game’s map progress, badges, story flags, settings, trainer inventory, or a complete local box state as a restorable save. If the Switch is lost or the game save is deleted, HOME may still contain Pokémon you previously deposited, but it cannot reconstruct the missing game.

Nintendo Switch Online is not required for Switch HOME

Pokémon Support states that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME. You may therefore use HOME without subscribing to Nintendo Switch Online. The membership remains relevant to online play and to Save Data Cloud for games that support that service.

Use the same HOME account on Switch and mobile

To see the same HOME Boxes in the Switch and mobile apps, start both versions with the same Nintendo Account. The account, not merely the device, determines which HOME storage you open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the Switch version, sign in with the Nintendo Account that should own the HOME storage.
  2. Install or open the mobile version and choose that exact same Nintendo Account during setup.
  3. Complete the initial linking steps before depositing important Pokémon.
  4. Confirm that the expected HOME Boxes appear on both devices before treating the setup as complete.

Pokémon warns that starting mobile HOME with a different account prevents later linking to the intended Switch account. If HOME was never linked to a Nintendo Account on an old device, its guest data and progress cannot be recovered after the device is lost or the app is removed. Do not create a separate guest setup if the goal is to share existing Boxes.

What account linking changes—and what it does not

Information that follows the Nintendo Account

When the same Nintendo Account is linked to a user on another Switch, account-managed information such as eShop purchases and Nintendo Switch Online status is available to that account. The link also enables Internet-dependent features such as online play.

Information that does not follow automatically

A linked account does not automatically transfer every game’s local save, copy a Pokémon title to the destination, or merge two different users’ saves. Save ownership and transfer eligibility still depend on the game and Nintendo’s transfer tools. For unsupported Pokémon titles, complete System Transfer; for compatible cloud titles, use Save Data Cloud; for individual Pokémon, use HOME.

Moving to Nintendo Switch 2

After moving to Nintendo Switch 2, Pokémon HOME can connect to games such as Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet only when that game’s save data is present on the same console where HOME is launched. Seeing the HOME app on Switch 2 is therefore not enough: the relevant game save must also be on that system.

  • Discover a new species of Pokémon with the Pokémon Lets Go series
  • Catch Pokémon in the wild using a gentle throwing motion with either a Joy-Con controller or a Poké Ball Plus accessory, which will light up, vibrate, and make sounds to bring your adventure to life
  • See the world in style by customizing Pikachu and your Trainer with a selection of outfits
  • Connect to Pokémon GO* to transfer caught Kanto-region Pokémon, including Alolan and Shiny forms, as well as the newly discovered Pokémon, Meltan, from that game to this one

Pokémon recommends Nintendo’s System Transfer while you sign in with the same Nintendo Account on both systems. Transfer the game save first, then launch HOME on the console that now contains the save and select the intended Switch user. If HOME cannot find the game, check the console on which HOME is running and confirm that the game’s save—not just the game software—is present there.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

“Pokémon HOME does not see my save.”

  • Confirm HOME and the game are running on the same Switch console. This is essential on Switch 2.
  • In HOME, choose Pokémon, then select the exact game and the Switch user that owns its save.
  • Check that the save was actually transferred to that console; installing the game alone does not create the old save.
  • Make sure HOME is signed in to the intended Nintendo Account, especially if mobile HOME was set up first.

“There is no cloud-backup option for my Pokémon game.”

Check Nintendo’s compatibility list before troubleshooting the subscription. The Pokémon titles listed above are excluded from Save Data Cloud, so use System Transfer. For another title, verify the Nintendo Switch Online membership, Internet connection, and same-account destination user.

“I linked my account, but my progress is missing.”

Account linking supplies identity and account services; it is not a save migration. Return to the source console and use System Transfer for an unsupported title or Save Data Cloud for a compatible one. Do not erase the source until the destination game opens with the expected progress.

“Which copy will be kept?”

Stop before downloading or transferring if both consoles contain different progress. Nintendo warns that backup and download operations can overwrite local or server data. Decide which save is authoritative, preserve it, and read each overwrite prompt before confirming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My old phone or Switch was lost.”

If HOME had been linked to a Nintendo Account, sign in with that account on the replacement device. Guest HOME data and progress that were never linked to an account cannot be recovered after loss or removal.

A safe checklist before you delete or reset anything

  1. Write down the exact Pokémon title and identify the Switch user that owns its save.
  2. Check whether Nintendo lists that title as compatible with Save Data Cloud.
  3. Use Save Data Cloud only for a compatible title with Nintendo Switch Online; otherwise use System Transfer.
  4. Use the same Nintendo Account on the destination and in both HOME apps.
  5. Keep the source console intact until the destination game and, if needed, HOME both show the expected data.
  6. Read overwrite and erase warnings carefully, then reset or remove the source only after verification.
