Pokémon card grading combines authenticity checks, condition assessment and protective encapsulation. A grade can make a card’s condition easier to judge, but it does not guarantee a higher sale price. Whether grading pays off depends on the exact card, the grade it receives, recent completed sales and the costs of grading and selling.
What Pokémon card grading involves
Grading companies examine a card to determine whether it is genuine and assess its condition. If it passes authentication, the company assigns a grade under its own standards. The card is then usually sealed in a holder with a label showing its grade and an identifying certification number. Standards, scales, labels and procedures vary by company.
Authentication comes before the grade
PSA says it checks whether a card is genuine and looks for signs of alteration before assigning a numerical grade. Its standards identify trimming, restoration, recoloring, altered stock, cleaning and questionable authenticity among reasons a card may be returned without a number. Some no-grade outcomes may still incur a fee, so check the chosen company’s current submission rules. PSA service levels and its grading standards describe PSA’s policies.
Condition is judged against a company’s scale
PSA uses a 1–10 scale, with 10 as its highest numerical grade. PSA describes a Gem Mint 10 as “a virtually perfect card,” citing features including sharp corners, sharp focus, full original gloss, no staining and approximate centering tolerances. The precise criteria belong to PSA; another grader may use a different scale or standard. PSA’s grading standards also acknowledge that borderline judgments can involve eye appeal and what the market will accept, so grading is not wholly mechanical.

The card is sealed and identified
In PSA’s process, an authenticated, graded card is encapsulated in a sonically sealed, tamper-evident holder. The label displays the grade and certification number. “Tamper-evident” does not mean impossible to counterfeit, and a holder is not proof of a card’s market value.
What a grade can—and cannot—tell you about value
A grade gives buyers and sellers a standardized condition signal. That can make comparisons easier and influence buyer confidence or the group of buyers interested in a card. It does not set a price or guarantee a premium. Value also depends on the card’s identity and scarcity, demand, sale timing and terms, and the grade assigned.

There is no established universal percentage increase for grading a Pokémon card. PSA offers auction and price-research tools, but the materials cited here do not establish one multiplier that applies across cards. An asking price or population count is not a completed sale.
Estimate the result for the specific card
Compare recent completed sales for the same card at the grade you are considering with completed sales of the same card ungraded. Raw cards can vary substantially in condition, so account for how closely each example matches yours. Consider a likely range of grades rather than assuming the card will receive the best possible result.

- Match the exact card, including its set and version, and use recent completed sales rather than listings that have not sold.
- Compare the potential graded result at more than one plausible grade with comparable raw-card sales.
- Subtract grading, shipping, insurance, any value-based upcharge and eventual selling fees.
- Account for the time between submission and sale; the market price may change while the card is away.
A useful conclusion is conditional: for this card, sales over a defined period suggest a particular grade sold within one range, while comparable raw copies sold within another. After costs, the result still depends on the grade received and the eventual sale price. Fill in those ranges only after checking matching completed sales.

On PSA’s United States-facing service page accessed October 4, 2026, Standard was listed at $59.99 per card, with a $1,000 maximum insured value and an estimated 90–100 business days. The same page listed the following levels:

These are a dated snapshot, not a permanent price list. PSA says turnaround estimates are not guaranteed, start after order entry and scanning, and may change with volume and capacity. Check the live PSA service page before submitting, including the applicable service level, insured-value limit and current terms.
For historical context, PSA’s February 10, 2026 announcement listed Value Bulk at $24.99 per card, Value at $32.99, Value Plus at $49.99, Value Max at $64.99 and Regular at $79.99 for new submissions at that time. It listed 45 business days for Value Plus, 35 for Value Max and 25 for Regular. Those were terms for new submissions from that date; the live page now shows different tiers and prices. The announcement also reported PSA’s own global throughput as approximately 15,000 cards per day in 2021 and approximately 90,000 per day at the time of the 2026 announcement; these are company-reported figures, not independent industry statistics. How to submit a card safely
- Review the current rules. Choose a service level and read the grader’s current submission and packing instructions, fees, insured-value terms and no-grade policies.
- Complete the online submission. PSA describes using an online form, then mailing the completed form, card and payment. Follow the chosen grader’s own process rather than assuming every company uses PSA’s steps.
- Pack the card as instructed. PSA warns that poorly packed, difficult-to-retrieve or transit-damaged submissions may be refused. Use the company’s stated protective materials and packing method; a particular brand or sleeve model is not mandated by the cited FAQ.
- Keep the order details. Retain your submission confirmation and shipment information so you can track the order and resolve delivery questions.
PSA says at least two authentication and grading professionals examine cards entering its grading room and that professionals must agree on a grade, while also acknowledging differences of opinion. Its grade guarantee has terms and restrictions; it is not insurance against a fall in market prices or a promise of a particular resale value. See the PSA FAQ.
How to check a graded Pokémon card before buying
When the grading company offers verification resources, check the certification number and any available front-and-back images. Compare the card’s identity and details with the label and verification record. A matching record is useful evidence to review, but do not treat the slab alone as a guarantee of authenticity or value. PSA’s certification verification tool is one example.
When grading may make sense
Grading is most useful when authentication, a standardized condition assessment or encapsulation is valuable to you, or when card-specific sale evidence suggests a plausible net return after costs. If the likely graded sale price does not justify fees and the wait, selling raw may be more practical. Make the decision from the card’s likely grade range and current completed sales—not from the hope of a top grade or a general claim that graded cards always sell for more.
