Phone coolers move heat away from a device in different ways: a fan-only model increases airflow, while a thermoelectric model uses a powered Peltier plate to draw heat to a hot side that a fan and heatsink must disperse. A cooler can help during sustained demanding use, but it is not a universal fix—and a cold plate can produce visible moisture in some conditions. Follow the instructions for your exact phone and cooler, and stop using the accessory if unexpected moisture appears.
How phone coolers remove heat
Phones generate heat during demanding tasks such as gaming and while charging. A cooler attaches to the phone or its heat-spreading surface and helps transfer heat away from the device.
Fan-only coolers
A fan-only accessory blows air across the phone’s exterior or a heat-spreading surface. It does not use a thermoelectric plate to pump heat from one side to another.
Thermoelectric coolers
A thermoelectric cooler (TEC) passes current through thermoelectric material. Through the Peltier effect, the module absorbs heat at its cold side and releases it at its hot side. A fan and heatsink help carry heat away from that hot side; making one surface cold is not enough unless the heat is also dissipated.

For example, ASUS describes the AeroActive Cooler 6 as offering fan-only and thermoelectric modes, with a more powerful mode available using external power. Its product page reports up to 25°C lower surface temperature near the CPU compared with an ROG Phone 6 without the cooler in an ASUS lab comparison; ASUS notes actual results vary with conditions. That is a product-specific manufacturer result, not a typical outcome guaranteed by all coolers.
When cooling may help performance
When a phone gets hot, it may reduce processor speed to manage its temperature. A cooler may help during a sustained workload if heat-related throttling is limiting performance, but the outcome depends on the phone, workload, cooler, attachment, and conditions.

A 2017 University of Michigan study by Youngmoon Lee, Eugene Kim, and Kang G. Shin evaluated its own adaptive thermoelectric cooling system on a smartphone. In the reported evaluation, average processor-speed loss from maximum was 1.8% with TEC versus 19.2% without it, with cooling power of 0.2 W for that result. The figures describe that study’s system and test—not an off-the-shelf cooler or a guarantee for current phones.
Can a phone cooler cause condensation or damage?
Yes, visible condensation is possible. When a surface becomes cold relative to the surrounding air, moisture can form on it. ASUS says droplets may appear on the back of a phone with its AeroActive Cooler 6 because of the temperature difference, and advises wiping them away. ASUS also describes a humidity sensor and protection mechanism on that model intended to prevent excessive cooling that could create condensation.

Those are product-specific statements. They do not establish how often moisture gets inside phones, whether internal damage occurs across different devices and environments, or that every cooler has the same safeguards. The cited sources do not support either a blanket claim that phone coolers damage phones or a promise that condensation can never cause harm.
- Follow the phone and cooler makers’ instructions for the exact model and setup.
- If unexpected moisture appears, stop using the cooler and wipe external droplets away. Do not assume the moisture is harmless just because another model’s manufacturer describes its own droplets as normal.
- Do not continue cooling a device if moisture persists or you suspect it has entered the phone; follow the device maker’s support guidance.
What to check before using or buying one
- Cooling method: Decide whether airflow from a fan-only model is suitable or whether you need a TEC plate with its associated fan and heatsink.
- Phone fit and attachment: Check the exact supported phone models and mounting method. Some accessories require the case to be removed. Razer’s setup guidance for its Phone Cooler Chroma advises removing the case for optimum cooling and magnetic connection; verify current instructions for your product.
- Controls and safeguards: Check whether the manufacturer documents temperature or humidity sensing and automatic protection. Do not assume features described for ASUS’s AeroActive Cooler 6 are present on other models.
- Power modes: A cooler may have different operating modes or require external power for stronger cooling. Check the product’s instructions and how each mode is powered.
- Evidence behind performance claims: Distinguish a manufacturer’s lab comparison from independent testing, and check the named phone, conditions, and limitations attached to the result.
Try basic heat management first
A phone cooler is an optional accessory for sustained high-load use, not a substitute for addressing unexplained heating. Nothing’s support guidance for Nothing phones says to remove the case while the phone is hot, let it rest with the screen off, avoid prolonged high-temperature use, use the official charger, and not continue playing while charging. Nothing gives an operating-environment range of 0°C to 35°C for its phones; that guidance is not a universal temperature limit for every brand. Follow your own phone maker’s documentation, and contact its service channel if unexplained heating persists.
