NASA’s Perseverance is already exploring Jezero Crater and caching selected samples for possible return to Earth. ESA’s planned Rosalind Franklin rover is designed to drill as deep as two metres at Oxia Planum and analyse samples on Mars. Both investigate whether Mars could have supported life, but they use different sites, depths and sample strategies—and neither mission’s objectives amount to a confirmed discovery of life.

At a glance: different approaches to the same broad question

Comparison Perseverance Rosalind Franklin
Mission status Operating on Mars. Planned future mission; ESA targets launch in October–December 2028 and landing in 2030. These are schedule plans, not completed events.
Destination Jezero Crater, selected for its ancient lake and delta deposits. Oxia Planum, a clay-rich region shaped by water.
Sampling focus Studies exposed rocks and collects selected rock cores and other material in tubes for possible future retrieval. Designed to drill into the shallow subsurface, to a maximum depth of two metres, and analyse samples onboard.
Search objective Assess ancient habitability and look for potential evidence of past microbial life. Search for signs of past and present life and characterize the shallow subsurface.

These are complementary strategies, not a contest with an established winner. The agencies describe mission goals and capabilities, not comparable probabilities of finding life. NASA’s Perseverance mission overview; ESA’s ExoMars mission overview.

Why are the rovers going to different places?

Perseverance: an ancient lake and delta in Jezero

Jezero Crater was chosen because evidence points to an ancient lake and river delta there. Such water-shaped settings can preserve geological records relevant to whether Mars once offered habitable conditions. Perseverance examines rocks and their context to study the crater’s history and assess whether microbial life could have existed in its distant past. NASA describes the mission and Jezero’s significance.

Rosalind Franklin: clay-rich deposits at Oxia Planum

ESA plans to send Rosalind Franklin to Oxia Planum, a region rich in clay minerals formed in the presence of liquid water. The rover is intended to investigate those deposits and the shallow subsurface for signs relevant to past or present life. The site and scientific objective are part of the mission plan; the rover has not yet explored them. ESA’s ExoMars description.

Which rover will drill deeper?

Rosalind Franklin is designed to drill as deep as two metres below the surface. That is the clearest hardware difference between the rovers: Perseverance examines surface exposures and drills selected rocks for cores, while Rosalind Franklin is built to access subsurface material. ESA’s rationale is that material below the surface may be better protected from radiation and surface conditions. Two metres is a design capability, not a result from operating on Mars. ESA’s mission description.

Greater depth does not by itself mean a greater chance of finding life. The missions target different geological settings and use different methods; their stated goals do not establish a head-to-head likelihood of success.

How do they analyse and preserve samples?

Perseverance studies rocks and caches selected material

Perseverance uses instruments to investigate rocks in place. SHERLOC helps examine organic matter and minerals, while PIXL maps rock chemistry at fine scale. Its drill collects intact rock cores into tubes rather than simply pulverizing the material. The rover seals selected cores and other samples for possible future retrieval and study on Earth. NASA’s mission overview; NASA’s instrument descriptions.

Returning those samples is a future objective, not a guaranteed outcome. Caching material preserves an opportunity for later analysis; it does not mean the samples have already been brought to Earth or that they demonstrate life. NASA’s explanation of the mission’s science and sample strategy.

Rosalind Franklin is designed to analyse samples on Mars

ESA says the rover will carry the Pasteur payload, a suite of eight instruments that includes cameras, spectrometers, radar and an onboard analytical laboratory. The drill is intended to deliver subsurface material for analysis on the rover, rather than relying on a cache being retrieved and returned to Earth. This describes the planned design; Rosalind Franklin has not yet operated on Mars. ESA’s ExoMars mission description.

When is Rosalind Franklin expected to reach Mars?

ESA’s announced plan is to launch Rosalind Franklin in October–December 2028 and land at Oxia Planum in 2030. ESA’s 30 March 2025 update gave 2030 as the planned touchdown year. Because both dates concern a future mission schedule, they should be understood as targets rather than guarantees. ESA’s planned launch window; ESA’s landing-platform update.

Has either rover found life?

The mission objectives and methods described by NASA and ESA do not establish a confirmed detection of life. Both rovers investigate habitability or search for possible signs of life, but searching for a biosignature is not the same as confirming that it came from living organisms. Perseverance’s cached samples are intended for possible future study; Rosalind Franklin’s planned onboard laboratory is a way to analyse material, not evidence of a discovery.
