A useful estimate subtracts percentage fees, fixed fees, international or currency-conversion charges, and any optional fee for faster access to funds. The exact result depends on your provider, account country, payment method, card origin, currency, and payout option.
Calculate the net payout for a payment
Start with the gross amount charged to the client, then subtract each fee that applies to that specific payment route:
Net payout = gross payment − percentage processing fee − fixed transaction fee − applicable international or currency-conversion charges − optional payout charge.
For example, if a provider charges a percentage plus a fixed amount, calculate the percentage against the transaction amount and add the fixed fee. Then account separately for any cross-border, conversion, or expedited-payout charge. Do not assume every category applies to every payment.

For a precise estimate, identify your account’s country, the payment product and method, whether the card is domestic or foreign, the currency you receive, whether conversion is needed, and whether you choose standard or faster payout. Provider schedules differ in both products and geography, so a single rate cannot describe every freelancer’s transaction.
Why the fee is more than a headline percentage
Percentage and fixed transaction charges
Some fee schedules combine a percentage with a fixed amount. For instance, Square UK lists online payment rates of 1.4% + 25p for UK cards and 2.5% + 25p for non-UK cards. These are Square UK schedule examples, updated February 2, 2026, not universal rates. See the Square UK fee schedule.

PayPal’s US business schedule also lists rates for particular online services and separate fixed fees by currency. The applicable figures depend on the service and currency; consult PayPal’s US business fees rather than applying one PayPal rate to every payment.
Payment method and card origin
The transaction type and the card’s issuing country can change the fee. Square UK’s schedule distinguishes domestic and non-UK cards for online products, and lists different rates for card-present payments and other products. Square Ireland publishes a separate schedule: it lists 1.4% + 25c for EEA/EU online card transactions and 2.9% + 25c for UK/non-EEA online card transactions. Square says VAT also applies. International charges and currency conversion
A cross-border card charge and a currency-conversion cost are distinct possibilities. Square UK lists a 1.5% international transaction fee for cards issued outside the UK, in its schedule updated February 2, 2026. That charge is separate from any conversion cost that may apply.
Stripe explains that a conversion cost may be reflected in the exchange rate or shown as a separate fee, while the total conversion fee remains the same. Check Stripe’s explanation of currency-conversion fees to understand how it appears for the relevant transaction.

Faster access to funds
Expedited payouts can reduce what reaches you after processing. Stripe lists Instant Payouts at 1.5% of volume, with a 50-cent minimum, and describes its standard payout schedule as free. Its pricing page says, “Alternatively, pay out your funds on your standard schedule for free.” These terms are subject to Stripe’s product and eligibility conditions; see Stripe pricing.
Square UK lists a 1.5% instant transfer fee calculated on the balance after card transaction fees, in its schedule updated February 2, 2026. Because the fee is calculated after those transaction fees, it should not be treated as 1.5% of the original client payment.

Compare providers using the same transaction
A provider comparison is meaningful only when the scenario is held constant. Use the same assumptions for each option:
- Country where your account is registered
- Payment method and product, such as online checkout or card-present payment
- Whether the card is domestic or issued abroad
- Gross transaction amount and percentage-plus-fixed fee
- Currency charged and currency received, including whether conversion is needed
- Standard or expedited payout
- Eligibility for the specific service and rate
Then calculate the resulting net payout for each provider. A lower processing percentage does not necessarily produce a higher payout if fixed, international, conversion, or speed-related fees differ. The official Stripe, PayPal, and Square schedules cover different services and locations; they do not establish one provider as universally cheapest. Check the current schedule for your account and transaction before quoting a precise net amount, since fees can change.
