Optical MEMS microphones detect sound by measuring the motion of a tiny diaphragm with light rather than sensing a change in capacitance. The OptiMEMS2 project reports a 10 dB noise advantage over state-of-the-art MEMS microphones, but that figure is a project-reported claim—not an independently verified, model-by-model comparison. sensiBel lists optical microphone products and USB-C evaluation kits, giving engineers a route to prototype evaluation; availability and performance should be confirmed with the manufacturer.

How does an optical MEMS microphone work?

Sound pressure moves a microfabricated diaphragm. In a conventional capacitive MEMS microphone, that movement changes the capacitance between elements in the sensor; an ASIC turns the change into an analog or digital output. STMicroelectronics describes this integrated sensor-and-ASIC approach and notes that capacitive MEMS microphones can be designed with either output type (STMicroelectronics’ MEMS microphone overview).

In the optical approach described by the European Commission’s OptiMEMS2 project, a tiny laser and photodetector sense movement of a silicon membrane (CORDIS OptiMEMS2 project fact sheet). sensiBel additionally describes interference and diffraction as part of its optical sensing principle (sensiBel’s technology page). In both approaches, sound becomes diaphragm motion; the difference is how that motion is detected and converted to an electrical signal.

What is established about the fidelity advantage?

The reported noise claim

The OptiMEMS2 project description reports “10 dB less noise” than state-of-the-art MEMS microphones. This is a claim reported by the project, not a result independently confirmed in the available material. CORDIS also describes high signal-to-noise ratio, high dynamic range, and resistance to distortion at high sound pressure as project-reported advantages (CORDIS OptiMEMS2 project fact sheet).

What the published material does not establish

The reviewed sources do not provide an independent comparative test protocol, a complete measurement table, or current per-model datasheet figures. The 10 dB claim therefore cannot establish that every optical microphone outperforms every capacitive model, or predict the result in a particular product or acoustic design. Engineers should compare current datasheets and, where the application warrants it, measure candidate microphones under the same conditions.

How far has the technology progressed toward products?

OptiMEMS2’s reporting period ran from May 2021 through October 2022. In an update dated 10 June 2024, CORDIS reported that high-volume-capable partners were making components, an assembly process had been developed, and the microphone was manufactured on fully automated equipment. The project also reported a small package, digital output, low-power optimization, and samples sent to lead customers (CORDIS OptiMEMS2 reporting, updated 10 June 2024). These are signs of manufacturing development and customer sampling, not proof of broad availability, current order volumes, or a specific product’s present purchase terms.

How should engineers compare optical and capacitive microphones?

The sensing principle alone is not enough to select a microphone. Compare the specific candidate parts against the requirements of the end product, using matched test conditions and current vendor specifications.

Design factor What to check
Noise and sensitivity Self-noise and signal-to-noise ratio, including the measurement conditions and sensitivity reference.
Acoustic headroom Dynamic range, acoustic overload point, and distortion at the sound pressure levels the product must handle.
Frequency response Response across the application’s band, including any tolerances or required equalization.
Power and packaging Power consumption, package dimensions, and acoustic port requirements in the intended enclosure.
Interface and host integration Analog or digital output, supported host electronics, and integration requirements.
Arrays and production Sensitivity matching for beamforming or noise cancellation, plus current production availability and cost.

ST notes that capacitive MEMS microphones integrate the sensor and ASIC in one package and that tight sensitivity matching can support beamforming and noise cancellation (STMicroelectronics’ MEMS microphone overview). Those are design considerations, not guarantees that all parts—or either sensing technology—will meet a particular system requirement. Treat the optical noise claim as a reason to evaluate suitable parts, not as a substitute for product-level specifications and testing.
