Babade’s path is not a claim that a physics degree automatically leads to a software job. It is a learner-practitioner account: while studying Physics, Babade is working as a software developer, building applications, and using each shipped feature to learn what engineering requires beyond syntax.
The clearest example is Ojavora, an e-commerce platform involving interfaces, backend services, PostgreSQL databases, authentication, payments, and cloud deployment. That breadth explains why building a real product can be a more useful classroom than isolated coding exercises: every layer has to work together for an actual user.
What this physics-to-software path really means
Babade describes a present-tense combination of roles: studying Physics while working as a software developer and building real-world applications. The September 7, 2026 DEV Community post is therefore an account of an ongoing path, not a retrospective claim that one credential guarantees a particular career outcome.
That distinction matters if you are asking, “Can I move from physics into software engineering?” The practical answer shown by this story is yes, a physics student can begin doing software work and demonstrate capability through products. The evidence is the work itself: a growing stack, a deployed application, and documented engineering decisions. It is not a promise of a job, salary, or universal route for every physics graduate.

Babade’s stated goal for writing is equally practical: document what gets built, share engineering lessons, and connect with developers and open-source contributors. Publishing the process turns private practice into a visible engineering record that other people can inspect, discuss, and learn from.
Where physics study and software engineering overlap—and where they differ
A physics background can provide useful habits, but software products introduce different constraints. The comparison below keeps those two ideas separate rather than treating them as interchangeable careers.
| Dimension | Physics study or research | Software product work |
|---|---|---|
| Problem definition | Explain or predict a physical phenomenon using a model, experiment, or analysis. | Translate a user or business requirement into behavior a system must provide. |
| Feedback cycle | Coursework, calculations, experiments, simulations, or peer review provide feedback. | Tests, logs, code review, user behavior, and production monitoring reveal whether the system works. |
| Deliverable | An analysis, experiment, simulation, report, or defensible result. | A running service, application, API, database workflow, or mobile experience. |
| Transferable practice | Mathematical reasoning, abstraction, programming, debugging, and checking assumptions. | System design, implementation, testing, security, operations, and communication with collaborators. |
| Possible direction | Academic or industrial physics and related technical work. | Software development and related product or engineering roles. |
The overlap is most useful when it becomes observable practice. Writing code to test a model is not the same as designing authentication or operating a payment workflow. A person moving between fields still has to learn the conventions, tools, and responsibilities of production software.
What Babade is building and the stack behind it
The post lists experience across a deliberately broad web and mobile stack. Each technology represents a different part of the product surface, so the list is more informative than a collection of isolated language names.
| Technology or area | Role in the described work | What learning it exposes |
|---|---|---|
| React | Building interactive user interfaces for the web. | Component design, state, user flows, and behavior that people can understand. |
| Next.js | Developing a web application around React with an application framework. | Connecting interface code with routing, server-side concerns, and deployment choices. |
| Node.js | Implementing server-side JavaScript services. | Request handling, business logic, APIs, validation, and operational behavior. |
| PostgreSQL | Persisting application data in a relational database. | Data modeling, queries, relationships, constraints, and reliable state changes. |
| Flutter | Building mobile application experiences. | Translating product behavior to another client platform while keeping the underlying service consistent. |
| APIs | Defining how clients and services exchange data and actions. | Contracts, error handling, authentication boundaries, and compatibility. |
| Payment systems | Supporting commerce transactions. | Trust, validation, failure handling, and the consequences of incorrect state. |
| Cloud deployment | Putting the application and its services where users can access them. | Configuration, releases, monitoring, availability, and operational responsibility. |
This breadth does not mean every technology must be mastered at once. It shows what happens when a project is treated as a complete product: interface decisions eventually meet data, security, third-party services, and deployment.

Ojavora as the concrete project
Ojavora is described as an e-commerce platform. Babade says it provided hands-on experience with product interfaces, backend services, databases, authentication, payments, and deployment. Those are connected responsibilities, not separate tutorial checkpoints.
An online store makes the connections visible. A product page needs data from a backend. The backend needs a database model. A customer account needs authentication. A purchase needs a payment flow and a trustworthy record of what happened. The deployed system must continue to behave correctly outside a local development machine. Ojavora therefore serves as a practical case study in integration.

Interfaces are part of engineering, not decoration
A storefront is judged first by what a person can see and do: find a product, understand its details, add it to a cart, and move through checkout. React and Next.js provide tools for implementing those experiences, but the engineering task is deciding what information and actions the interface should expose, then keeping the screen consistent with the server’s actual state.
That includes handling ordinary but important conditions: loading data, showing validation errors, preserving a useful state after a failed request, and making it clear when an action has succeeded. A polished visual surface cannot compensate for a broken order or an ambiguous payment result.
Backend services turn intent into rules
Node.js services are where an application can enforce business rules instead of trusting the browser. The server should validate incoming data, check that a user is allowed to perform an action, and apply changes in a controlled order. APIs make those rules available to a web client, a Flutter client, or another approved consumer.

Thinking in API contracts also changes how a developer debugs. A failure may come from an incorrect request shape, an authorization decision, a database constraint, or a downstream service. The visible error on a screen is only the final symptom.
Databases preserve the product’s memory
PostgreSQL gives an e-commerce application a structured place to keep products, accounts, orders, and related records. The important lesson is not merely how to write a query. It is deciding which facts belong in the model, how records relate, and which constraints prevent impossible states.
For example, an order should retain an unambiguous relationship to its customer and its purchased items. A payment update should not silently rewrite the history needed to understand what happened. These are design decisions that become visible only when the application is used as a system rather than as a collection of screens.
Authentication is a boundary of trust
Authentication determines who is signed in; authorization determines what that person may do. Treating both as a checkbox would be inadequate for a store. Account data, order information, administrative actions, and payment-related operations need different boundaries.
A useful learning exercise is to trace every sensitive action from the client request to the server check and then to the database change. If any step relies solely on a value supplied by the browser, the boundary deserves another review.

Payments make failure handling unavoidable
Payment systems introduce consequences that do not exist in a simple demo. A customer can lose connectivity, a provider can reject a transaction, or a response can arrive later than expected. The application must distinguish a confirmed payment from an attempted or unknown state and avoid presenting an order as complete when that status is not established.
Babade’s description does not provide a particular payment vendor or implementation recipe, so no vendor-specific claim can be made. The engineering lesson is the responsibility itself: commerce requires careful state transitions and clear recovery paths.
Deployment makes “works on my machine” insufficient
Cloud deployment puts the application in an environment with real configuration, networking, credentials, releases, and operational failures. A developer has to understand how the web client reaches its services, how secrets are supplied without exposing them, and how a changed database or service is introduced safely.
Deployment is therefore part of development, not a final handoff. It gives immediate feedback about assumptions that local testing can hide.

Reliability, security, scalability, and usefulness are the larger lesson
Babade’s explicit takeaway is that software engineering goes beyond writing code: it involves designing systems that are reliable, secure, scalable, and useful. Ojavora shows why those words belong together.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Reliable: expected actions work consistently, and failures produce understandable outcomes rather than corrupted or ambiguous state.
- Secure: identity, permissions, credentials, and sensitive operations are protected at the boundaries where they matter.
- Scalable: the design leaves room for more users, data, requests, or clients without requiring every assumption to be replaced immediately.
- Useful: the system solves a real user problem clearly enough that the features have a purpose beyond demonstrating a framework.
These qualities are not separate badges to collect after coding. A database choice affects reliability; an API boundary affects security; deployment affects availability; an interface affects usefulness. Building one product forces those trade-offs into the same conversation.
How building products creates a stronger learning loop
Babade’s planned writing practice—documenting builds, sharing practical lessons, and connecting with other developers—adds a feedback loop around implementation. A project becomes easier for others to evaluate when its decisions, failures, and constraints are explained.
A useful public record can include:
- The problem the application is intended to solve and who it is for.
- The boundary of the first usable version, rather than an unlimited feature list.
- A diagram or written explanation of the interface, API, services, and database relationships.
- Security and reliability decisions, including what the system does when a request fails.
- Deployment notes that identify configuration assumptions without exposing credentials.
- Known limitations and the next change that would provide the most learning.
This documentation is not marketing copy. It is evidence of how a developer reasons about a system and responds when the first design meets reality. Conversation with developers and open-source contributors can then improve both the code and the explanation.

A practical route for physics students who want to build
The following sequence applies the lesson of Babade’s path without pretending that every learner should copy the same stack or project.
- Choose a concrete problem. Define one user, one outcome, and one reason the application should exist. A small, real workflow is more informative than a large list of disconnected features.
- Pick a coherent first stack. Use technologies you can support together. Adding React, Next.js, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Flutter, payments, and cloud services all at once may create too many simultaneous unknowns; introduce the parts as the product requires them.
- Build one vertical slice. Make a single path work from interface to API to database and back. This reveals integration problems earlier than building an entire front end before writing the service.
- Add identity and failure paths deliberately. Test invalid input, unauthorized actions, unavailable services, and interrupted requests. Record what the user sees and what state the server retains.
- Deploy a usable version. Treat configuration, secrets, logs, and release steps as part of the feature. The goal is a system another person can actually access, not only a local demo.
- Document the decisions. Explain what you chose, what you did not build, and what broke. This creates the public engineering record that Babade wants to develop.
- Iterate from evidence. Use testing, feedback, and observed failures to select the next change. Do not expand the stack merely to make the project sound more advanced.
What this story proves—and what it does not
It demonstrates one credible way to combine physics study with active software development: learn technologies by using them in a product, then make the work visible through documentation and community interaction. It also demonstrates that full-stack experience includes operational and design responsibilities, not just writing functions.
It does not establish a universal hiring formula, a salary expectation, or an employment statistic. The post contains no such figures. Anyone evaluating a similar transition should judge their own readiness by concrete evidence—working software, understandable code, sound explanations of trade-offs, and the ability to maintain what they ship—rather than by the title of a degree alone.
