There is no universal schedule for greasing a firearm—and grease may not be the lubricant your firearm needs. Follow the owner’s manual for your exact make and model: it identifies the approved lubricant, lubrication points, and amount. Store the firearm unloaded and locked away from children and unauthorized people, with ammunition locked separately. Before firing after storage, make sure the bore is clear.
How often should you lubricate a firearm?
Use the maintenance schedule in the manual for your exact firearm. Lubrication needs differ by design, and a manual may call for oil or another firearm lubricant rather than grease. Applying lubricant in the wrong place—or using too much—can affect operation.
GLOCK’s care guidance for its pistols is one specific example: clean and lubricate a new pistol before its first use, after each time it is fired, and at least once a month if it has not been used. GLOCK also calls for care after exposure to rain, snow, perspiration, salt water, dirt, or dust. These are GLOCK’s recommendations for its pistols, not a schedule for all firearms. Exposure can call for attention between scheduled cleanings
Moisture and contamination can change what maintenance is needed. Henry Repeating Arms advises wiping exposed metal and applying a fresh film of oil after damp weather; soaking rain, snow, or salt spray may require more thorough cleaning and oiling. Why “grease it” is not a complete instruction
The manual should specify the lubricant and where it belongs. For example, the Springfield Armory Echelon manual specifies one drop of lubricant on each side of the rear slide rails and says not to put oil or grease on the striker. That example applies to the Echelon only; do not transfer its lubrication points or amount to another firearm. Springfield Armory: Echelon Manual
Too much lubricant can be as unsuitable as too little. GLOCK cautions that excess lubrication can affect pistol performance. Use only the amount and product specified in your model’s manual, and do not improvise internal disassembly or repair beyond its instructions. If the manual calls for service or you find wear, contact the manufacturer or a qualified gunsmith.

How to approach cleaning and lubrication safely
- Consult the firearm’s manual first. Find its cleaning and lubrication directions, including any product restrictions and model-specific steps.
- Unload and verify the firearm before cleaning. Point the muzzle in a safe direction and visually and physically inspect the chamber when clearing or unloading, as ATF advises. ATF: Learn About Firearms Safety and Security
- Follow only the manual’s maintenance procedure. Apply lubricant only at the specified points and in the stated amount. If you are unsure how to proceed, stop and ask the manufacturer or a qualified gunsmith.
- Check the bore before firing. Make sure no oil, grease, or other material obstructs it. Ruger warns that even a partial bore obstruction can damage a firearm and cause serious injury or death. Sturm, Ruger & Co.: LCP II Owner’s Manual
How should you store a firearm?
Lock it unloaded and secure
Store the firearm unloaded in a locked, secure location that children and unauthorized people cannot access. ATF advises keeping ammunition locked in a secure location away from firearms. A firearm’s supplied locking device can be one part of a secure-storage approach, but consider the risks in your household and follow applicable local storage requirements. Protect it from moisture
Choose a dry storage environment and avoid cases or materials that retain moisture. Henry’s manual warns against storing its firearm in moisture-absorbing fabric or leather cases. It also advises against sealing the barrel to exclude dust, saying that internal steel is more likely to rust or corrode. For extended storage, follow model-specific preservation instructions
Smith & Wesson recommends firearm-intended lubricating oil or preservative on the bore, chamber, and internal surfaces, and anti-rust oil on external parts for extended storage. Its guidance also says to clean the firearm before using it again. Treat this as Smith & Wesson guidance, not a universal treatment; the manual for your exact firearm takes precedence.
