There is no universally right checking interval. Set a price tracker’s cadence to match how quickly you need to know about a change, how many products it monitors, and what its data source permits. More frequent checks can detect changes sooner, but consume more requests; less frequent checks reduce load but may miss short-lived prices.
Choose a cadence based on when you need to act
Start with the decision the alert is meant to support. If you only need to know whether a price changed by tomorrow, checking every few minutes is unlikely to add useful value. If a brief promotion matters, a shorter interval may make sense, provided the provider allows it and your request budget can sustain it.
There is no current, primary cross-retailer statistic establishing one optimal interval for all products and services. Price changes, data availability, and access rules vary, so treat the cadence as a design choice rather than an industry standard.
Check whether the data source supports notifications
For supported Amazon SP-API workflows
Amazon’s SP-API usage-plan guidance recommends: “Rely on push notifications instead of polling mechanisms.” This advice applies to supported Amazon API workflows where relevant price notifications are available; it is not a claim that every retailer offers notifications or that every Amazon use case is covered. Confirm the event types, products, and marketplaces available to your integration in the current Amazon SP-API usage plans and rate limits guidance.

When polling is necessary
Use a fixed polling schedule only after checking the provider’s current documentation, account eligibility, and applicable limits. Where response headers provide rate-limit information, use them; do not assume one limit applies to all accounts, operations, or regions. Back off when throttled rather than continuing at the same rate.
Estimate workload before choosing an interval
The number of tracked products matters as much as the interval. A schedule that works for a handful of products may exceed the request budget for a large catalog. Estimate the total calls for all products and request types over the period your plan supports, then compare that workload with the provider’s limits.

Keepa provides one documented example, not a universal benchmark. Its Tracking API lets users configure an updateInterval in hours. Keepa says a one-hour setting aims for 24 updates per day, distributed as efficiently as possible rather than at perfectly exact hourly boundaries. This describes Keepa’s configuration, not an independent measurement of how often retailers change prices.
Keepa’s API uses a token-bucket model: plans generate tokens at plan-specific rates, and unused tokens expire after 60 minutes, according to its API documentation. Check the current plan details and calculate whether the intended product count and request pattern fit the available budget before setting a schedule.

Keep collection frequency separate from alert frequency
A tracker can collect data on one schedule and alert only when a change meets a chosen threshold. For example, a tracker might record small fluctuations without notifying the user each time, then send an alert only after a meaningful price drop. This is a design option, not a claim that a particular provider includes threshold controls.
Also distinguish the data source’s refresh behavior from your tracker’s polling interval. A tracker that requests data every hour cannot guarantee that the retailer’s price feed has changed or refreshed hourly. Tell users what the tracker actually does and what freshness the source states, rather than promising real-time updates without support for that claim.

Do not confuse price-history windows with refresh rates
Amazon’s May 1, 2026 announcement, updated June 24, describes Alexa for Shopping price-history views covering 30, 90, and 365 days in the U.S., UK, and India. Those numbers refer to how much history shoppers can view, not how often the underlying system checks prices. The announcement also says more than 50 million customers had used the feature since its 2024 launch; that is a company-reported feature-use figure, not evidence about polling frequency or price-change detection.
Amazon’s Product Pricing API documentation describes retrieval of pricing and offer information for products in Amazon’s catalog. That API description should be read alongside Amazon’s separate usage-limit guidance; it does not establish unrestricted consumer access to every Amazon price.

A practical selection checklist
- Decide how soon after a price change the user needs to know.
- Check for provider-supported notifications before building a polling loop.
- Count monitored products and estimate total calls or tokens for the planned schedule.
- Read current limits for the specific account, operation, region, and API.
- Use backoff when a provider throttles requests.
- Set alert thresholds independently from collection cadence when the implementation supports it.
- Describe the configured interval and source freshness accurately; do not imply exact timing or real-time updates unless guaranteed by the source.
