NXP supplies processors for Ford’s connected-vehicle architecture: vehicle-network processors support secure in-car networking and over-the-air (OTA) updates, while NXP i.MX 8 Series processors help power SYNC 4’s multimedia and connected features. Ford and NXP announced the collaboration on November 10, 2021, naming the 2021 F-150, Mustang Mach-E and Bronco as examples.
What does NXP supply to Ford?
NXP’s role is inside the vehicle’s electronics, not as a consumer accessory. Its vehicle-network processors help connect vehicle systems and gateways. The announcement says those gateways can deploy software updates and new services, and can process and send vehicle data to the cloud.
NXP i.MX 8 Series processors support the SYNC 4 experience. Ford and NXP associated them with graphics, in-car productivity, cloud services, enhanced voice recognition and location-based applications. The announcement describes intended capabilities; it does not provide independent measurements of how well those features perform.
NXP’s November 10, 2021 announcement describes the processors as part of Ford’s fully networked vehicle architecture. NXP CEO Kurt Sievers said the S32G2 and i.MX 8 Series processors would support expanded services, user experiences and convenience.

How do OTA updates and connected vehicle data fit in?
Over-the-air software updates
An OTA update is software delivered to a vehicle remotely rather than installed only through a physical service visit. In Ford’s described architecture, vehicle-network processors and gateways support deploying updates and new services. The announcement does not detail update eligibility, installation steps, which software can be updated, or whether an update requires a particular connection or owner action.
Vehicle data and cloud services
The release says the processors can handle and send deep vehicle data to the cloud. Ford could use that data for continual product improvement and data-driven services such as vehicle-health management. It does not specify the data collected, retention or privacy controls, or which services were available to owners of the named models.

Which Ford models were named?
The November 2021 announcement identifies these as examples in Ford’s global fleet using the networked architecture:
- 2021 Ford F-150
- Ford Mustang Mach-E
- Ford Bronco
The release does not map particular processor models or features to each vehicle, nor does it establish coverage by model year, trim, market or individual vehicle. Its examples should not be taken as a current compatibility list for later vehicles.

Can you buy the NXP technology yourself?
Not as a plug-in connected-car upgrade. The partnership concerns semiconductors integrated into an automaker’s vehicle architecture. An evaluation board or development hardware, even if available through an electronics distributor, would not add NXP networking processors or SYNC 4 to a Ford vehicle. The announcement does not identify a consumer product or supported retrofit.

The collaboration announcement explains the intended roles of NXP’s vehicle-network and i.MX 8 Series processors, but it is not an independent test of the resulting vehicles. It reports no statistics for OTA reliability, update speed, customer adoption, safety improvement or financial impact. NXP’s reported 2020 revenue of $8.61 billion is company background, not an outcome or measure of this Ford partnership.
