In NHL scoring, a player’s points equal their goals plus their assists. Franchise record pages track goals, assists and points as separate records, and regular-season totals should not be mixed with playoff totals. For a current leaderboard, check the NHL’s official records site and note its scope and date.

How goals, assists and points relate

A goal is credited to the player who scores. An assist is a separate credit awarded to a teammate in connection with a goal. A player’s points total is the sum of that player’s goals and assists; points are not a third kind of scoring event.

For example, a player with 20 goals and 30 assists has 50 points. That is an arithmetic illustration, not a record claim. The precise rules for awarding individual goal and assist credit are set out in the current NHL rulebook; consult that rulebook for eligibility or scorer-judgment questions.

What counts as a franchise record?

An NHL franchise leaderboard may show separate leaders for goals, assists and points. Those categories are not interchangeable: a points leader need not be the goals leader, because points also include assists. Check whether the listed record covers the regular season or the Stanley Cup Playoffs; the NHL maintains those as distinct scopes.

  • Statistic: identify whether the comparison is for goals, assists or points.
  • Game type: use regular-season figures or playoff figures consistently.
  • Franchise history: retain any qualification about relocation or predecessor teams shown by the club or record page.
  • Cutoff: distinguish an updated leaderboard from a dated announcement or milestone snapshot.

Where to verify a current record

Records.NHL.com is the NHL’s official records resource. The League describes it as covering skater, team, playoff, regular-season and franchise records, with sortable historical information and frequent updates. Select the relevant franchise and statistic, then confirm the game type and any history qualifier before comparing totals. Record the date you checked, since live totals can change during a season.

The NHL’s 2025-26 franchise-record milestone material also directs readers to Records.NHL.com for skater, goaltender and team records across regular season and playoffs. Use the official page rather than treating a milestone release as a live ranking.

A dated example: Detroit franchise points

An NHL Stats and Information snapshot titled “Most Points with One Franchise,” published February 3, 2026, listed Gordie Howe with 1,809 points for Detroit and Steve Yzerman with 1,755 points for Detroit. Those are figures from that entering-2025-26 snapshot, not a verified October 2026 leaderboard. Check the official records page for the current standings.

Why franchise-history labels matter

A team’s present identity does not always tell you how its historical totals are scoped. For example, the Carolina Hurricanes’ July 30, 2024 retirement announcement described Eric Staal’s team records as applying “since relocation”: 322 goals, 453 assists and 775 points. Preserve such explicit qualifiers rather than assuming every franchise record includes predecessor-team seasons on the same basis.

Historical totals and corrections

The NHL has documented reviews of its historical statistics. In an October 5, 2017 article, it reported that its game-by-game compilation corrected games played for about 650 players, assists for 370, goals for 100, penalty minutes for 1,100 and shots on goal for 1,500. That history supports checking the current official record page when a past total is disputed; it does not by itself show that current leaderboards are inaccurate.
