NBA centers can contribute offensively before they ever touch the ball: set a well-timed screen, read how the defense reacts, then roll, slip, re-screen, or pass to the open teammate. Shooting range and post counters can add value too, but neither is mandatory for every center. The right priorities depend on the player’s reliable skills, the team’s spacing, and the coverages opponents use.

Start by creating an advantage with the screen

A screen is more than contact with a defender. Its angle and timing can free the ball handler, and the center’s next move determines whether the action keeps pressure on the defense. NBA.com defines a screen assist as a screen that directly leads to a teammate’s made field goal. That statistic captures one result, not every useful screen or advantage.

Choose the angle, then move decisively

Arrive on time and set a legal screen that influences the on-ball defender’s route. Afterward, read the space: roll toward the rim if the lane opens, slip toward the basket if the defense commits before contact, or set another screen if the first action creates no advantage. In NBA.com’s account of Marcin Gortat’s screening for Washington, Gortat described watching how the opponent played the pick-and-roll and making a counter-move. Coach Scott Brooks said, “He gets our offense going.” NBA.com’s Gortat report also cited 5.9 screen assists per game across the prior season and the current season through the Thursday games covered in that article; that historical figure is not a current benchmark.

Read the coverage and make the next pass

The defense’s response to a ball screen helps determine what the center should do next. If the defender guarding the screener stays deep, a passing window may open to a shooter, while the ball handler may have room to pull up. If that defender steps up aggressively, a slip or roll can become available. The center should be ready to receive the ball and quickly assess the rim, the low defender, and open perimeter teammates.

Use simple drills as teaching examples

A Jr. NBA practice-plan drill illustrates a basic read: when the coach drops back, pass to the shooter; when the coach steps up, the screener slips and receives the pass. It is a youth drill, not a tested NBA development prescription. It can illustrate the idea of reacting to a defender, but no single drill establishes an elite short-roll passing curriculum.

Develop shooting range when it fits the player and lineup

A center who can make open shots may pull a rim protector away from the basket and create a pick-and-pop option. Whether that helps depends on the player’s accuracy, where the shots come from, how defenders respond, and what the lineup needs. Shooting range should complement useful screening, rolling, passing, or interior scoring—not displace a more valuable strength simply to imitate another player.

NBA.com’s 2021 retrospective reported that three-point attempts made up 22.2% of league field-goal attempts in 2010–11 and 39.2% in 2020–21. These are historical season endpoints reported in 2021, not current-season figures. The same article reported that mid-range shots fell from 31% to 13% of total shots over the decade it examined. Coach Erik Spoelstra’s point was that an efficient offense need not follow one template: “Offense usually is about getting guys to play together, bring out the best in each other and, ultimately, finding efficiency.” See NBA.com’s 2021 analysis of the three-point era.

Keep post moves and interior counters matchup-dependent

Post scoring can be useful when a center secures deep position, has a mismatch, or can draw help and pass to an open teammate. A face-up or short mid-range counter may also punish a defender who concedes space. These are options, not required additions: the available evidence does not establish a universal post-move package or current NBA success rates.

NBA.com’s account of Orlando’s offense described a sequence of attacking through post-ups and drives first, then kicking the ball out for threes when the initial attack produced no shot. Stan Van Gundy summarized that approach: “We wanted to attack the basket, No. 1, on post-ups and drives. And if we didn’t have anything, we wanted to throw the ball out and shoot 3s.”

Choose development priorities for the player and team

There is no established universal skill sequence for NBA centers. Coaches can compare possible priorities with these practical questions; they are evaluation prompts, not a validated statistical model.

Keep screens and post play within current rules

For the 2026–27 season, NBA Official’s September 29, 2026 Points of Emphasis includes freedom of movement for screens and for perimeter and post play. Coaches should teach legal positioning and avoid treating moving or restraining contact as a technique to seek. The page is an overview of points of emphasis, not a full rules manual.
