In Nepal, a mutual fund’s costs come from two different places: recurring expenses deducted inside the fund’s net asset value (NAV), and transaction charges applied when you buy, transfer or redeem units. A commonly cited regulatory ceiling is 1.5% of NAV for fund management, 0.20% for depository services and 0.20% for supervision, but each scheme’s prospectus can set different rates within the applicable rules.
For investors, the practical answer is to read the latest prospectus and annual report for the exact scheme. Current scheme pages illustrate the differences: Nabil Invest’s NI31 lists a 1.5% management fee, 0.2% depository fee and a NPR 5 transfer fee, with an exit load that falls from 1.5% to 0.75% and then to zero as the holding period increases. These are scheme-specific terms, not a nationwide price list.
The two ways mutual-fund charges reach your pocket
Most Nepalese mutual-fund costs are not collected from you as a separate monthly bill. The fund pays permitted expenses from scheme assets, so the cost is reflected in the NAV used to price your units. A smaller group of charges is applied directly to a purchase, transfer or redemption transaction.
Recurring costs deducted through NAV
Management, depository, supervisory and operating expenses are normally accrued by the scheme and incorporated into its NAV calculation. If a fund has NPR 100 million in assets and incurs NPR 1.5 million in annual management fees, the expense reduces the assets available to all unit holders; your units are not debited individually for that amount.

Transaction costs charged to an investor
Transfer fees, exit loads, depository-participant (DP) charges and any applicable capital-gains tax can reduce the cash you receive or increase the amount needed to complete a transaction. The amount and timing depend on the scheme and on whether you are buying, selling or transferring units.
Recurring fees inside the NAV
The following figures are useful reference points, but they should not be treated as a universal tariff. The 1.5% management and 0.20% depository and supervisory figures come from a 2020 summary of Mutual Fund Regulation 2067. Fund-manager disclosures show that actual scheme terms can be lower or can use a different NAV base.
| Cost category | Reference figure | How it is commonly applied | What to verify for your scheme |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fund-management (scheme-management) fee | Up to 1.5% of NAV in the cited regulation summary; Nabil Invest NI31 and current NMB scheme pages list 1.5% | Accrued from scheme assets and reflected in NAV | Rate, whether it is a ceiling or a contracted rate, and the NAV averaging method |
| Depository fee | 0.20% of NAV in the regulation summary; Nabil and NMB pages list 0.2% | Paid from scheme assets | Whether the percentage is calculated on NAV and whether a separate DP fee applies on your transaction |
| Supervisor fee | 0.20% ceiling in the regulation summary | Paid from scheme assets | The scheme’s disclosed rate and averaging base |
| Supervisor-fee example | 0.12% of NAV in NIMB Ace Capital’s 2021 annual report; 0.10% of average weekly NAV on NMB Hybrid Fund L-II’s current page | Scheme-specific disclosure | Reporting period, current prospectus and whether the base is weekly, daily or another average |
| Operating expenses | Actual permitted cost; no single nationwide percentage is stated | Audit, listing and renewal, brokerage, notices and publications, reporting, CDS registration and other approved expenses may be paid by the scheme | Annual-report amounts, expense policies and any caps in the prospectus |
Why the NAV averaging base matters
A percentage alone does not tell you the full cost. A fee calculated on average weekly NAV can differ from one calculated on a point-in-time NAV, particularly when a scheme’s asset value changes sharply. NMB Hybrid Fund L-II, for example, states a 0.10% supervisor fee on average weekly NAV. NIMB Ace Capital’s 2021 annual report says fees were calculated using the applicable NAV-averaging method and Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) rules. Always read the wording beside the rate.

Operating expenses are not the same as the management fee
The management fee pays for running the portfolio and scheme-management function. It does not necessarily include every cost incurred by the fund. Audit work, stock-exchange listing and renewal, brokerage on portfolio trades, investor notices, periodic reporting and CDS registration can be charged at actual cost when the scheme documents permit them. Two funds with the same 1.5% management fee can therefore produce different total expense burdens if their trading activity or other operating costs differ.
Purchase, transfer and entry charges
Many investors use “entry load” to mean a fee deducted when units are bought. Whether one exists is a scheme-level question. Nabil Invest’s current NI31 product page states that buying carries no charge other than a NPR 5 transfer fee for one transaction. That statement does not establish that every open-ended or closed-ended fund in Nepal has the same arrangement.
What to check before placing a purchase order
- Whether the scheme calls the charge an entry load, sales charge, transfer fee or another name.
- Whether the stated amount is per transaction, per application or per unit.
- Whether a DP or account-maintenance charge is collected separately by your intermediary.
- Whether the published NAV is before or after the day’s accrued expenses.
Keep the transaction confirmation. It records the units allotted, the applicable NAV, the transfer fee and the date from which a holding-period-based exit load may be measured.

Redemption and exit-load charges
An exit load is a charge for selling or redeeming units before a specified holding period. It is usually calculated on the transaction amount, not as a recurring percentage of your NAV balance. The exact definition of “transaction amount,” the date used for the holding period and the treatment of partial redemptions should be stated in the prospectus or application form.
NI31’s published tier schedule
| Holding period from allotment | Exit load on transaction amount |
|---|---|
| Up to one year | 1.5% |
| More than one year and up to two years | 0.75% |
| More than two years | No exit charge |
The NI31 page also states that capital-gains tax may be charged when a gain remains after the exit charge, and that the NPR 5 transfer fee applies. Nabil Invest describes holdings beyond two years from the allotment date as having no charges under its published exit schedule. This is an example for NI31, not a promise that another scheme uses the same tiers.
DP fees and tax
NMB Capital’s FAQ says open-ended-fund sales generally involve an exit-load fee, a DP fee and capital-gains tax on profitable sales, with DP fees calculated on purchase. The wording means that the DP charge can be separate from the fund’s management and depository expenses. Tax treatment and rates can change under Nepal’s prevailing tax rules, so confirm the amount shown on the redemption statement rather than relying on an old calculation.

How NAV-based costs affect your return
NAV expenses reduce the value at which units are priced, while an exit load reduces the proceeds from a sale. They affect returns differently:
- A management or operating expense is borne proportionally through the NAV while you remain invested.
- An exit load is conditional: it applies only when you redeem under the scheme’s stated holding-period rules.
- A transfer or DP fee is normally a fixed transaction cost, so it has a larger percentage effect on a small investment than on a large one.
- Capital-gains tax depends on whether the sale produces a taxable gain and on the rules in force at the time.
For an illustration, suppose a scheme’s redemption amount before transaction charges is NPR 50,000. A 1.5% exit load would be NPR 750, leaving NPR 49,250 before any NPR 5 transfer fee, DP charge or tax. This is arithmetic for understanding the mechanism; your actual NAV, gain, tax and eligibility for the load-free tier must come from the scheme’s statement.

- Read the latest scheme documents. Find the current prospectus, supplemental terms and redemption instructions. Confirm the exit-load tiers, DP fee, transfer fee, cut-off time and settlement method.
- Calculate your holding period. Use the allotment or purchase date specified by the scheme. If you bought units in multiple transactions, ask how each lot is treated.
- Check the day’s NAV and units eligible for redemption. Confirm whether the order will use the NAV for the application day or the next applicable valuation point.
- Submit the redemption request through the approved channel. Use the form, online portal or intermediary named by the fund manager, and provide the bank or demat details requested.
- Review the calculation before approving. The statement should show gross redemption value, exit load if any, transfer or DP charges, tax withheld where applicable and the net amount payable.
- Keep the confirmation and settlement record. If the net amount differs from your estimate, compare each line with the prospectus and contact the fund manager or registrar promptly.
How to compare two Nepalese mutual funds
There is no published, current nationwide average expense ratio covering every Nepalese mutual fund. A meaningful comparison therefore requires the latest documents for both schemes. Use the six checks below rather than selecting a fund solely because one headline percentage is low.

Read the annual report, not only the advertisement
The prospectus tells you what the scheme is allowed to charge; the annual report shows what it actually incurred during a stated fiscal period. Label older figures accurately: NIMB Ace Capital’s 0.12% supervisor-fee disclosure is from its 2021 annual report and should not be presented as a current rate without a newer confirmation. Likewise, a current manager webpage is useful for that scheme but does not replace another fund’s documents.
Common mistakes that make fees look cheaper than they are
- Confusing a management fee with total expenses. Brokerage, audit and reporting costs can sit outside the headline management percentage.
- Comparing percentages with different NAV bases. “Of NAV” and “of average weekly NAV” are not interchangeable descriptions.
- Ignoring holding period. A fund with no entry charge can still be expensive to leave early if its exit load is high.
- Forgetting fixed charges. A NPR 5 transfer fee or a DP charge matters more on a small redemption.
- Assuming tax is included in the exit load. The exit load and capital-gains tax are separate lines and can both reduce proceeds.
- Using an old schedule. Fees, redemption terms and tax rules can be amended; check the date and version of every document.
SEBON’s role and where the rules fit
SEBON is Nepal’s securities regulator. Its stated responsibilities include registering mutual funds, granting permission to operate collective investment schemes, and supervising and monitoring them. The Mutual Fund Guidelines-2069 and related securities laws provide the regulatory framework, while each approved scheme’s prospectus sets the operational details investors use.
A regulation summary published in 2020 reports ceilings of 1.5% for management, 0.20% for depository and 0.20% for supervision. Those figures are useful guardrails, but an amendment, a new prospectus or a scheme-specific approval can change what applies. Before investing or redeeming, check SEBON notices, the fund manager’s current prospectus and the latest annual or periodic report.
