There is no single upload-speed threshold that guarantees a stable YouTube stream around the clock. Start with the outgoing bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, then leave capacity above it. YouTube recommends 20% headroom; as a planning calculation, that means available upload capacity of at least 1.25 times the stream bitrate. It is a baseline, not an uptime guarantee.

Upload speed by resolution and frame rate

The table uses YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingestion bitrates. The upload figures are calculated by multiplying each bitrate by 1.25 to reflect YouTube’s 20% headroom guidance. They are arithmetic planning baselines—not separate upload thresholds published by YouTube.

Live resolution and frame rate Recommended H.264 stream bitrate 1.25× planning baseline for upload capacity
720p30 8 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 12.5 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 21.25 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps 26.25 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps 42.5 Mbps
2160p30 42 Mbps 52.5 Mbps
2160p60 50 Mbps 62.5 Mbps

For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream uses YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps video bitrate, so the corresponding 20%-headroom planning baseline is 12.5 Mbps of upload capacity available to the encoder. That capacity must be genuinely available while streaming, not just advertised as a plan’s maximum.

Check the codec and encoder settings

The bitrate depends on the codec as well as resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s current live settings guidance lists these recommended AV1/H.265 video bitrates: 6 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60; 10 Mbps for 1080p30; 12 Mbps for 1080p60; 15 Mbps for 1440p30; 24 Mbps for 1440p60; 30 Mbps for 2160p30; and 35 Mbps for 2160p60. These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not internet-plan requirements. Apply the same 1.25 planning calculation to the bitrate you actually select.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency (do not exceed four seconds). For RTMP/RTMPS, its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. Audio is a small part of the total, but video, audio, and transport all use upload capacity. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the recommendation matching your actual codec and stream settings.

Measure the connection the stream will actually use

Download speed does not show whether your connection can continuously send a live feed. Use the upload result from a speed test as a starting point, then assess how much capacity remains when other people and devices are using the network. YouTube recommends leaving room for bandwidth and notes that a shared connection can limit the capacity available to a streamer. Its streaming tips say: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” YouTube also recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate.

Amazon Basics USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Internet Adapter, Compatible with Windows and macOS, Black
  • Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
  • Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
  • Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
  • Compare measured upload capacity—not download speed—with the planning baseline for your stream.
  • Account for concurrent uploads, video calls, backups, and other household or office traffic. A connection that only reaches the baseline when idle may have too little room under ordinary load.
  • Where practical, connect a computer encoder to the router or switch with Ethernet. A cable can avoid some wireless variability, but it cannot raise the ISP’s upstream capacity or prevent an ISP outage.
  • For multiple simultaneous destinations, add the outgoing bitrates together before sizing capacity. YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance gives a target of 1.5–2 times the combined bitrate for stability, especially on shared connections. That multiplier is specific to simulstreaming, not a universal rule for a single 24/7 stream.

Test before relying on a 24/7 stream

  1. Set the target. Choose the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to use, then find the matching recommended live bitrate in YouTube’s encoder table.
  2. Calculate a starting capacity. Multiply that bitrate by 1.25 for a single stream, following YouTube’s 20% room advice. Include other simultaneous destinations before applying the relevant simulstreaming guidance.
  3. Test the real setup. Run the encoder with representative audio and motion, ideally over Ethernet for a computer. An unlisted test stream can help you check the setup without making the production stream public.
  4. Watch YouTube’s stream health. While the test is live, check the Stream health panel and messages for upload or connection problems. A speed test alone cannot show how the actual encoder behaves over time.
  5. Plan for outages separately. Bandwidth sizing does not prevent ISP or access-network failures. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a universal failover design or guaranteed speed for uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Common upload-speed problems and fixes

The plan’s download speed looks high, but the stream struggles

Download capacity is not the relevant measure for sending the feed. Check upload performance and compare it with the stream’s bitrate plus headroom.

The stream works when the network is quiet, then degrades

Other devices or users may be consuming upstream capacity. Repeat the test under normal shared-network conditions and account for traffic that coincides with the stream.

The speed test passes, but YouTube reports stream-health issues

A speed test is a snapshot, not proof of sustained performance. Test the encoder itself with representative content, monitor YouTube’s messages while live, and check whether the actual codec and bitrate match your calculation.

A brief network outage stops the feed

More bandwidth cannot prevent an ISP or access-network outage. Treat connectivity resilience and recovery as separate design questions; the bitrate calculation alone cannot guarantee continuous service.
