There is no fixed storage requirement for a 24/7 prerecorded children’s YouTube channel. If you loop a short playlist, you need space for that playlist—not a year of unique videos. At YouTube’s recommended 1080p standard-frame-rate video bitrate, plus its recommended stereo audio bitrate, allow about 3.77 GB per hour of distinct source video, before overhead or extra copies. Use your actual file sizes for the most accurate total.
Start with the amount of unique video you keep
A channel can broadcast around the clock by repeating a finite set of prerecorded videos. The 24/7 schedule describes how long the stream is on air; it does not tell you how many distinct hours of video you need to store.
- Finite playlist loop: Add up the runtimes of the distinct files in the rotation. A one-hour playlist remains roughly a one-hour library, even if it loops continuously.
- New programming every day: Count the unique hours you retain each day and multiply by the number of days you keep them.
- Broadcast archives: If you also save a recording of each live broadcast, count those archive files separately from the source library.
- Backups and alternate exports: Each separate copy or version takes additional space. RAID or another redundancy arrangement is not itself a separate recoverable backup.
YouTube’s live-ingestion guide describes the feed as media segments sent to YouTube. The outgoing stream is a delivery operation; it does not mean you must retain a year of unique local video when you are repeating a finite playlist. YouTube’s live DASH-ingestion guide.
Estimate storage from bitrate and runtime
For decimal storage units, use this estimate:
Storage in GB ≈ combined bitrate in Mbps × unique duration in hours × 0.45

The coefficient converts megabits per second over an hour into decimal gigabytes. To estimate decimal terabytes, divide the result by 1,000. The formula estimates encoded media only; it does not include filesystem or container overhead, project files, other exports, or backup copies.
YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4 with H.264 video and lists SDR video bitrates by resolution and frame rate. It recommends 384 kbps stereo audio. Adding that audio rate to the video recommendations gives the following planning estimates. These are calculations from YouTube’s recommendations, not a measured file-size test or a storage requirement.

The 24-hour and year figures mean 24 or 8,760 hours of distinct retained content, respectively. At the 1080p standard-frame-rate example, a one-hour playlist is about 3.77 GB; a unique 24-hour daily playlist is about 90.5 GB; and a unique year is about 33.1 decimal TB. A playlist that loops does not multiply its source-library size by the number of times it plays.
Use your files for a channel-specific total
If you already have the videos
- Find the size of each distinct source file in your rotation or archive.
- Add those file sizes to get the source-library total. If you keep unique daily programming, include all retained days.
- Add separately the capacity for any live archives, alternate versions, project assets, and backups you intend to retain.
- Leave capacity for new material and normal file-system overhead; the exact reserve depends on how quickly your library grows and how long you keep older files.
Actual variable-bitrate files can be larger or smaller than the bitrate-based examples because complexity and encoder settings affect file size. When the files exist, their summed sizes are a better estimate than assuming every hour matches a planning bitrate.

If you only know the export settings
Use the combined video and audio bitrate in the formula, then multiply by the number of unique hours retained. For example, the 1080p standard-frame-rate estimate combines YouTube’s 8 Mbps SDR video recommendation with 0.384 Mbps stereo audio. If your audio is mono, 5.1, or encoded at another rate, use its actual bitrate instead.
YouTube recommends uploading at the same frame rate as the recording. Its guidance lists 720p at 5 Mbps for standard frame rates and 7.5 Mbps for high frame rates; 1080p at 8 Mbps and 12 Mbps, respectively. Those are recommendations, not a guarantee that every file at that resolution will have that bitrate or size. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations state: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”

Account for quality, audio, and units
- Resolution and frame rate: Higher recommended bitrates increase estimated storage per hour. Select the row closest to the actual export, or calculate from the actual bitrate.
- Audio format: The examples use 384 kbps stereo audio. YouTube lists 512 kbps for 5.1 audio; substitute the applicable audio rate rather than reusing the stereo example.
- HDR or other encoding choices: YouTube lists higher SDR rates for HDR. The table does not represent HDR, higher frame rates beyond the shown examples, or every codec and encoder configuration.
- Decimal units: The figures use 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes and 1 TB = 1,000 GB. A drive or operating system may display capacity differently, so avoid treating decimal TB and binary TiB as interchangeable.
- Copies: A second full copy approximately doubles the media storage occupied by the copied files; add project assets and working exports separately.
Choose local storage or cloud operation
Local library
An external desktop hard drive can hold a source library, but capacity alone does not establish that it is sufficient for your channel. As a rough comparison, Seagate lists an 8TB Expansion Desktop model. At the 1080p standard-frame-rate estimate of 3.77 GB per hour, 8 decimal TB corresponds to roughly 2,100 hours before overhead, backups, and other uses.
