For viewing, focus first on a stable connection of about 20 Mbps sustained for 4K UHD playback and on whether your computer can decode the video’s codec. A 16 GB PC can be a practical general-purpose target, but that is not a YouTube requirement and does not mean you need to upgrade just to watch YouTube.
Watching a YouTube live playlist is not the same as broadcasting one
If you mean playing existing live videos in a browser, your PC is decoding and displaying video delivered by YouTube. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers, so the broadcaster’s encoder settings are not a viewer RAM specification. YouTube’s general playback guidance says some premium videos, including live streams, may need a faster connection and greater processing power for optimal playback (YouTube Help: System requirements & supported devices).
RAM is only one part of playback capability. The browser and operating system, the processor or graphics hardware’s ability to decode the chosen codec, and connection stability can all matter. YouTube does not publish a RAM threshold for this viewing scenario.
What to check before buying more RAM
Connection speed and stability
YouTube’s approximate guidance for 4K UHD playback is a sustained connection speed of 20 Mbps. That is a playback connection figure—not an amount of RAM, and not a broadcaster’s upload bitrate. A connection that varies or is shared heavily may still interrupt playback even if a speed test briefly reaches that level. See YouTube’s playback requirements and troubleshooting guidance.

Codec support and hardware decoding
Check that the computer, operating system, and browser can decode the codec YouTube serves for the video. Mozilla notes that 4K YouTube playback in Firefox depends on the device’s hardware, operating system, and YouTube’s codec choices; if hardware decoding is unavailable, the browser may rely on software decoding. That can increase processor load and cause stutter even when memory is not the limiting factor (Mozilla Support: 4K YouTube videos in Firefox).
Memory available to the whole system
A 16 GB PC is a reasonable broad target for many general-purpose computers, but this is general buying advice, not a YouTube specification, and it is not established by the playback guidance cited here. If your PC is also used for video editing, gaming, or many simultaneous applications, those workloads may justify more memory independently of watching a playlist. Consider available memory while your usual apps are open rather than treating 4K playback alone as proof that an upgrade is needed.

If playback stutters, troubleshoot in this order
- Close competing apps and tabs. YouTube recommends closing other tabs, browsers, and programs when troubleshooting playback. This can reduce both system load and network use.
- Check the connection during playback. Confirm that the connection can sustain roughly 20 Mbps for 4K UHD and is not fluctuating or congested.
- Update the browser and operating system. Current software can improve compatibility with video formats and hardware decoding.
- Check hardware decoding and system load. If the CPU is heavily loaded while video plays, the computer may be decoding in software or competing with other work. Review browser settings and device support for hardware acceleration.
- Compare with a lower resolution. If lower-resolution playback is smooth but 4K is not, investigate decoding capability and sustained network performance before assuming RAM is the cause.
- Upgrade memory only if the broader workload supports it. Before buying a kit, confirm the PC’s compatible memory generation, maximum capacity, and available slots; the YouTube playback guidance does not identify a kit or required capacity.
If you mean running your own continuous 4K60 live playlist
That is a different workload: the PC or streaming service must send an encoded live stream to YouTube. The relevant figures are upload bitrate and upload headroom, not the viewer’s 20 Mbps playback guidance. YouTube’s current live encoder table recommends 35 Mbps for 4K/2160p at 60 fps using AV1 or H.265, or 50 Mbps using H.264. YouTube also recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. These are broadcaster-side recommendations, not RAM requirements for watching a playlist (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; YouTube Help: live streaming requirements).
Those bitrate recommendations describe the outgoing stream sent to YouTube; they should not be confused with the sustained playback speed a viewer needs. The encoder workload and hardware requirements depend on the broadcasting setup, so the viewing guidance above cannot determine a broadcaster’s RAM requirement.
