There is no single RAM capacity that is right for gaming, video editing, and AI. Choose based on the specific game or application, the work you do in it, and what else you keep open. For a concrete starting point, Adobe recommends 16 GB of system RAM for HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher in Premiere Pro on Windows. Local AI applications may also set separate requirements for system RAM and graphics-card memory (VRAM).
Quick guide: match RAM to the workload
| Workload | What the available requirements say | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming | There is no universal gaming RAM figure established here. Microsoft says, “Game requirements may vary.” | Check the current requirements for each game and account for other applications you plan to run alongside it. |
| HD video editing | Adobe recommends 16 GB RAM for HD media in Premiere Pro on Windows. | Check the requirements for your Premiere version, operating system, media, and workflow. |
| 4K and higher video editing | Adobe recommends 32 GB or more for 4K and higher in Premiere Pro on Windows. | Also check GPU and storage requirements; system RAM alone does not determine editing performance. |
| Local AI | Requirements depend on the application and configuration. Some products specify system RAM and GPU VRAM separately. | Check the selected model, runtime, context, graphics setup, and both memory figures where listed. |
These are workload-specific requirements, not guarantees of a particular experience. The figures below apply to the named software and sources, not every computer or application.
How much RAM does video editing need?
Premiere Pro on Windows
Adobe’s technical requirements page, last updated September 16, 2026, applies to Premiere versions 26.0, 26.2, 26.3, 26.3.2, 26.5, and 26.5.1. It lists 8 GB as the minimum and recommends 16 GB for HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher. See Adobe’s Premiere Pro technical requirements for the applicable details.
Adobe’s recommended amounts are useful planning points for those media categories, but they do not promise a particular editing experience for every codec, effect, sequence, or combination of open applications. Adobe also specifies GPU and storage requirements, so more system RAM by itself is not a complete performance plan.

Premiere Pro on macOS
Adobe lists 8 GB as the minimum for macOS and recommends 16 GB of unified memory for Apple silicon. Unified memory is not an ordinary replaceable RAM kit: check the specifications of the Mac you intend to use before buying, since conventional user-installed memory advice does not apply to Apple silicon systems.
Adobe’s professional video and audio hardware recommendations offer broader context, but the version-specific requirements page is the more direct reference for Premiere’s current listed requirements.

How much RAM does gaming need?
Use the current system requirements for the particular game rather than treating an operating-system minimum as a gaming recommendation. Microsoft lists 4 GB or greater memory as a Windows 11 operating-system requirement and cautions that “Game requirements may vary.” That Windows figure is not a recommendation for gaming; consult Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements for the OS details.
The right capacity can differ by game and by what you run at the same time. Check each game’s published requirements, then consider whether a browser, voice chat, streaming or recording software, or other applications will be open too. The available requirements do not establish a universal capacity or a guaranteed frame-rate gain from adding RAM.

How much RAM does local AI need?
“AI workload” covers different software, models, and graphics setups, so one product’s requirement is not a general rule. Check the exact application listing and distinguish system RAM from GPU VRAM: they are separate specifications and one cannot be substituted for the other.
Examples from local AI applications
| Application | System RAM listed | GPU memory or graphics details listed |
|---|---|---|
| Local Spirit | For its stated 14B local language model, 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommended. | At least 11 GB GPU VRAM minimum and 16 GB or more recommended. |
| Pixel Q | 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommended. | The listing specifies separate graphics requirements. |
These are requirements from the individual applications’ listings, not a standard for local AI as a whole. Local Spirit’s listing notes that performance may vary with GPU, drivers, runtime configuration, context size, and available system memory. Your selected model, runtime, context, and graphics hardware can change what is needed.

Before buying RAM or choosing a computer
First identify the software and workload you care about; then compare its requirements with the computer’s supported memory. A capacity recommendation is useful only if the machine supports that memory and can accept an upgrade.
- Check upgradeability: determine whether memory is replaceable, soldered, or unified. Do not assume a laptop or desktop can take a user-installed kit.
- Confirm compatibility: verify the supported memory type or generation, form factor, and maximum capacity in the computer maker’s specifications.
- Check every relevant requirement: for AI, look for system RAM and GPU VRAM separately; for video editing, check the editor’s GPU and storage requirements as well as RAM.
- Account for concurrent use: decide which applications will be open together. Treat this as a planning consideration rather than a fixed, universally measured extra amount.
For a specific recommendation, compare the exact computer model and the current requirements of the games, editor, or AI application you plan to use. Without those details, a single number risks being either more than you need or insufficient for your workload.
