For modest local writing, 16 GB of system or unified memory is a sensible starting point—not a guarantee for every model. Eight gigabytes may handle smaller models at modest context lengths on Apple Silicon, while larger models, longer conversations, and other open applications call for more headroom. Storage depends on the model files you download and keep; there is no universal disk-capacity minimum.
How much RAM do you need for a local writing model?
LM Studio recommends 16 GB or more for Apple Silicon Macs and at least 16 GB for Windows. It also says an 8 GB Mac may work with smaller models and modest context sizes. These are starting recommendations, not promises that every model will fit or run well on a particular computer. See LM Studio’s system requirements.
- 8 GB: A constrained option. LM Studio specifically identifies smaller models and modest context sizes as the use case for an 8 GB Apple Silicon Mac. The operating system and other applications also use memory.
- 16 GB: A practical entry point for modest use and consistent with LM Studio’s recommendations for Apple Silicon and Windows.
- More than 16 GB: Consider it when your chosen model or context does not fit, or when you want to run other demanding applications at the same time. The precise amount depends on the model, runtime, context setting, and hardware.
There is no reliable universal RAM-per-parameter rule in the official material cited here. In particular, a model’s parameter count by itself does not establish how much memory a writing setup needs.
Why model file size is not the whole memory requirement
The downloaded weights are only part of the working set. Quantization changes how much memory the weights use, while the context cache, runtime, and other active applications also need memory. Longer context can materially increase memory pressure.

A cluster of four MS-S1 MAX units successfully ran a DeepSeek-R1 671B Q4 large model. A reserved cluster power-on interface allows for unified start-up and shutdown
llama.cpp supports integer quantization from 1.5-bit through 8-bit. Lower-bit weights use less memory, but the trade-offs depend on the model and quantization. Check the exact model file and its quantization rather than estimating from parameter count alone.
Context settings matter as well. AMD’s July 29, 2025 demonstration described a 256,000-token context for Llama 4 Scout on a specific Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system with 128 GB of memory, Flash Attention enabled, and an 8-bit KV cache. That is a vendor demonstration of a high-memory configuration, not a recommendation or requirement for ordinary writing. AMD also described 4,096 tokens as LM Studio’s default context at the time; defaults can change with software versions and settings. See AMD’s July 2025 description.

How much storage should you leave free?
Local inference requires downloading model weights before you can run the model in LM Studio. With llama.cpp, models are used as local GGUF files. Your storage need therefore depends on the exact files you intend to keep, plus room for software updates and normal computer use. The official documentation does not establish one disk-capacity minimum that works for everyone.
- Pick the model and file first. Check its actual download size and quantization.
- Add the files you plan to keep. If you want several models available, include each model file in your estimate.
- Leave additional space. Keep room for updates, applications, and ordinary files rather than allocating the entire drive to models.
An external SSD for model files is an optional way to expand capacity when internal storage is tight, not a requirement for running a local model.

Does a local LLM require a dedicated GPU?
No. llama.cpp documents CPU inference as well as hybrid CPU-and-GPU inference, so a discrete GPU is not an absolute prerequisite. LM Studio recommends at least 4 GB of dedicated VRAM on Windows, but that figure does not guarantee that a particular model will fit entirely in GPU memory. Hybrid inference can distribute work between CPU and GPU when a model is larger than available VRAM; performance depends on the hardware and backend.
