For most people buying a budget 5G Android phone, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage is a sensible starting point. If the upgrade costs little more, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage provides extra room for multitasking, games, photos, and offline downloads. A lighter user may get by with 4GB of RAM, but should expect less headroom.
These are practical buying targets, not Android requirements or performance guarantees. The processor, software, storage speed, and manufacturer’s memory management also affect how a phone feels.
Is 4GB RAM and 128GB storage enough?
It can be enough for calls, messaging, web browsing, streaming, and modest app use—especially if you keep few large files on the phone. The trade-off is limited room for demanding apps and frequent app switching, so apps may need to reload more often. If the price difference is reasonable, 6GB RAM is the safer general-purpose choice.
Storage is a separate question: 128GB can suit a light user, but the advertised capacity is not all available for personal files. For example, cited Samsung listings for 128GB Galaxy A16 5G variants report about 108–109GB available. That figure is specific to those listings, not a universal amount for every 128GB phone.

Choose RAM and storage for how you use the phone

These figures are buying guidance, not benchmark results. A phone’s specifications alone do not guarantee the same experience across brands or models.
What RAM and storage affect
RAM helps with active apps
RAM is working memory used while apps and system processes are running. More RAM can provide extra room for switching among apps, but the amount printed on a box does not tell the whole story: software and manufacturer memory management also matter.

Check whether a listing distinguishes physical RAM from virtual or “extended” RAM. Do not treat a combined marketing figure as equivalent to that much physical RAM; the sources cited here do not establish a performance conversion between them.
Internal storage holds apps and files
Internal storage is where the operating system, apps, games, photos, videos, and downloads live. A phone’s advertised capacity includes space that is unavailable to you, so check the listing for usable storage when that information is provided. Apps and games make extra internal capacity especially useful.

Do not confuse Android minimums with a comfortable buying target
Google describes Android (Go edition) as “a mobile operating system built for entry-level smartphones with less RAM than standard in higher-end devices.” Its page’s displayed table lists 2GB as the minimum RAM for Android 13 Go edition. That is a version-specific platform figure, not a recommendation for every budget phone or a measure of what will feel comfortable for your apps.
Android’s platform compliance documents also specify technical requirements for memory and available application-private-data storage. Those requirements define compliance conditions; they do not establish a universal consumer buying target. Check the exact phone variant before you buy
A model family name does not guarantee one RAM configuration, even within the same country. Samsung’s official Galaxy A16 5G pages illustrate the variation:

When a microSD card helps—and when it does not
A card can add space for media on phones that support one, but it is not automatically a substitute for internal storage. Support, maximum capacity, and what can be stored vary by model; some SIM trays also share their slot with a card.
For example, Motorola’s moto g 2025 user guide says the phone supports an optional microSD card up to 128GB and describes it as portable storage for media such as photos, videos, and music. It explicitly says apps cannot be stored on the card. Check the guide for the exact phone you are considering before counting on expansion.

Use this checklist to compare two budget 5G phones
- Confirm the exact RAM and storage variant sold in your country. Check the product listing and SKU; configurations can differ between markets.
- Look for usable internal storage. Advertised capacity includes space you cannot use for your own files, and the available amount varies by device.
- Separate physical RAM from virtual RAM. A combined figure is not the same as an equal amount of physical memory.
- Verify expansion details. Check whether the phone has a microSD slot, its supported capacity, whether the tray is shared with a SIM, and whether apps can use the card.
- Match capacity to your workload and ownership plans. Games, frequent app switching, offline video, and locally stored camera files make extra headroom more valuable.
- Check current software and update support for the exact model. RAM cannot compensate for a phone that no longer receives suitable support.
