For a basic local AI study assistant, 16GB of system RAM is a sensible starting point—not a guarantee that every model or study workload will run well. Storage has no universal minimum: it depends chiefly on the model files you download, plus room for your study materials and app data. Choose the assistant and model first, then match your computer to their requirements.

How much RAM should you plan for?

Two vendors’ current recommendations converge on 16GB for a basic local setup. LM Studio recommends at least 16GB on Windows and 16GB or more on Apple Silicon. AnythingLLM lists 16GB for a basic configuration. These are product recommendations, not a universal minimum for every local model or a promise of a particular speed.

LM Studio notes that some Macs with 8GB can still work with smaller models and modest context sizes. That exception should not be extended to larger models, long document contexts, or multitasking: your operating system and other open apps also use memory, leaving less available to the model.

Why model and context settings matter

When a runtime loads a model, it allocates memory for model weights and other parameters. The selected model and context settings therefore affect whether available RAM is adequate. A study assistant asked to work with extensive notes or several documents at once may need more headroom than a small-model setup with short prompts. The cited requirements do not specify a model, context length, or document workload that would establish an exact amount for every student.

System RAM is not graphics memory

Do not treat dedicated GPU memory (VRAM) as interchangeable with system RAM. LM Studio separately recommends at least 4GB of dedicated VRAM for Windows. AnythingLLM describes 8–12GB or more of VRAM as useful on Windows and says GPU support can accelerate local inference. These figures are guidance from different products, not a shared minimum; check the requirements for the runtime you intend to use.

How much storage do local model files need?

There is no fixed storage figure that applies to every local AI study assistant. AnythingLLM says storage needs vary with the size of the local LLM stored on the computer. The model is downloaded to disk and then loaded into memory to run, so check the actual download size for the model and version you plan to use rather than relying on a generic capacity estimate.

Also leave room for study documents and application data. The reviewed requirements do not quantify those items, so their storage use depends on what you keep and how the application stores it. Avoid filling the drive to the model’s download size alone; reserve additional working space.

Local model or hosted AI: how the choice changes requirements

Run a model locally

With local inference, your computer stores the model files and does the model computation. That makes model size, available RAM, context settings, and—depending on the runtime—graphics acceleration central to planning.

Use a hosted model

AnythingLLM describes its client as lightweight when connected to a cloud LLM: the computer does not need to store that model locally, but an API key is required. This reduces local model-storage and inference demands; the requirements cited here do not establish a privacy or answer-quality comparison between local and hosted use.

A practical way to check whether your computer is suitable

  1. Choose the assistant and operating mode. Decide whether it will run a local model or connect to a hosted provider. Hosted use changes the local hardware calculation.
  2. Select the model and intended context. Consider the size of the model and whether you need to work with long notes or multiple documents; these affect memory needs.
  3. Check the runtime’s current requirements. Compare its system RAM and, if applicable, VRAM guidance with your computer’s specifications. Do not assume one vendor’s GPU recommendation applies to another runtime.
  4. Check the model’s download size. Confirm the file size for the exact model version you plan to install, then allow additional storage for study materials and app data.
  5. Account for the rest of your workload. The operating system and other applications share system memory with the model. If your computer has less than the runtime’s basic recommendation, a smaller model and modest context may be more realistic than expecting the same workload to fit.

What the recommendations do—and do not—tell you

As of the vendor documentation accessed October 3, 2026, 16GB is a well-grounded baseline for a basic local setup, but the documentation does not define one machine configuration that guarantees acceptable speed for every study workflow. The sources also do not set a universal storage capacity or compare specific computers. Requirements can change with software and model releases, so verify the current documentation and the exact model download before choosing or upgrading a machine.
