Most oil-product demand is for transport fuels; oil is also a raw material for products such as plastics. The daily figure is an annual average, not a measure of how much the world uses in every individual day.
How much oil does the world use each day?
OPEC estimates that average world oil demand was 105.15 million barrels per day in 2025 in its 2026 Annual Statistical Bulletin announcement. “Per day” here is a rate averaged over the year: actual demand varies over time.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports a different kind of figure: oil demand grew by 0.65 million barrels per day during 2025, according to its Global Energy Review 2026. That is the increase in demand, not the total amount the world used. The two figures answer different questions and should not be added together or treated as interchangeable.
What is oil used for?
Transport fuels
Transport fuels account for the largest share of oil-product demand, according to the IEA. Road fuels are a major category, while aviation and shipping fuels are also identified in its sector analysis. The IEA describes transport-fuel demand growth in 2025 as largely steady in its Global Energy Review 2026.

Petrochemical feedstocks
Oil-derived materials are also used as industrial feedstocks. Naphtha, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and ethane are among the raw materials used to make plastics, the IEA notes in its Global Energy Review 2026. In this use, oil is not burned as a transport fuel; it is processed into materials.
Other products and uses
Oil products serve additional purposes, but the cited public source pages do not provide a complete set of 2025 global end-use percentages. The IEA’s product-level datasets cover multiple oil-product categories and flows; their scope is described on its World Energy Statistics page. Its Oil Information page also describes related data.

Do not read a chart showing how much demand grew by sector as a breakdown of what share of all oil each sector uses. The IEA’s sector chart groups demand growth over 2021–2025; it is not a complete table of total demand shares.
Why oil-use figures can differ
Oil statistics may describe demand, production, growth, or a forecast. Those measures are related but not equivalent. For example, OPEC’s 2026 announcement gives 2025 world crude-oil production as 74.85 million barrels per day, alongside its separate 105.15 million-barrel-per-day estimate of world oil demand. Production of crude oil is not the same measure as demand for oil and oil products.

- Production: oil produced, a supply-side measure rather than a direct statement of end use.
- Forecast: an estimate of a future period that can change as market conditions shift.
What is the outlook for 2026?
In its September 2026 Oil Market Report, the IEA forecast a 2.5 million-barrel-per-day decline in world oil demand during 2026, amid disrupted flows and higher prices. This is a dated forecast under exceptional market conditions—not a revision to the 2025 annual average or a timeless measure of oil use.
