Choose iPad storage by how much you expect to keep on the device at the same time: apps and their data, photos and videos, and downloads for offline viewing. For light use with few downloads, the entry capacity may be enough; a large local photo library or several downloaded shows calls for more room. Apple’s 2025 iPad (A16) comes in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB options, but those capacities are not all available for your personal files.
How much storage do you need on an iPad?
There is no universal capacity that suits every iPad owner. Start with what must remain available when you are away from Wi-Fi or do not want to rely on the cloud. Apps, game and project files, original-resolution photos and videos, and offline movies all use local storage.
- Light use: The entry tier can work if you use a modest number of apps, keep few large files, and rarely download video for offline playback.
- Regular photo and travel use: Consider stepping up a tier if you keep a substantial photo library on the iPad or want multiple shows or films available between internet connections.
- Large projects or extensive offline media: Choose the largest capacity you can reasonably afford if you routinely keep sizeable creative projects or a broad media library on the device.
This is practical guidance, not an Apple storage requirement. The tiers cited here are for the 2025 iPad (A16); capacity options differ by iPad family, so check the specifications for the exact model you are considering.
What storage capacities does the iPad (A16) offer?
Apple lists these capacities for the 2025 iPad (A16):
#1 Best Overall
- Made For iPhone Certified. Compatible with iPhone 15 or newer (USB-C) and iPhone 14 or older models (Lightning)(2). When connected via USB-C, works with SANDISK Memory Zone app or Apple iOS Files app—automatic backup requires SANDISK app(3). Lightning connection requires the SANDISK app for copy and backup functions(3).
- SANDISK Memory Zone App Required. Download the app(3) from the App Store and update firmware if prompted to optimize your file management experience or jump to the iOS Files app from the home screen.
- Free Up Space. Seamlessly transfer files to your SanDisk Phone Drive, then easily delete them from your phone to reclaim valuable storage(3).
- Smarter Backups. Choose manual or automatic backup within the SANDISK Memory Zone app with real-time progress tracking, background multitasking, and partial backup support when storage is limited(3).
- Reliable Transfers. Move content between your USB-C or Lightning iPhone, iPad Pro, Mac, and other compatible devices(2).
| iPad (A16) capacity | What to consider |
|---|---|
| 128GB | Potentially workable for a modest app collection and limited local media, especially if you are willing to manage downloads and optimize photos. |
| 256GB | A middle option for people who expect to keep more apps, photos, projects, or offline video locally. |
| 512GB | The most local storage among these cited A16 options, suited to people who want more room for large projects or an extensive offline library. |
Apple cautions that formatted capacity is lower than the advertised number and varies with software version, settings, and iPad model. The printed capacity therefore is not the amount you can devote entirely to personal content. See Apple’s iPad (A16) technical specifications for the model’s listed capacities and qualification.
How to estimate your own storage needs
Rather than rely on a generic “number of photos” or “number of movies” estimate, use the storage your current device actually consumes and account for what you plan to add. File sizes vary, so a fixed item count can be misleading.
- On your iPad, open Settings > General > iPad Storage.
- Review the available space and the apps listed by storage used. Look for large app data, downloaded video, photos and videos, iCloud Drive documents, and files saved within apps.
- Decide what needs to be available offline: for example, travel video, work documents, games, or active creative projects.
- Factor in whether you are comfortable deleting watched downloads or unused apps to make room, and whether you are willing to optimize your photo library with iCloud Photos.
- Compare that expected local use with the capacity options for the exact iPad model. Also weigh the price difference between tiers; it is a personal buying trade-off, not a fixed storage formula.

Can iCloud Photos reduce the storage you need?
Yes, it can reduce the space used by photos and videos on the iPad, but it does not increase the iPad’s built-in capacity. Photos and videos are stored on the device in original high resolution by default. With iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage enabled, full-resolution originals are kept in iCloud and space-saving copies remain on the iPad when needed.

Cloud storage has its own allowance and account settings. Apple says an iCloud account includes 5GB of free storage; users can upgrade to iCloud+. That allowance is shared cloud space, not extra built-in iPad storage, and it may not be enough for a large photo library. Apple’s support page, published October 2, 2026, describes the photo-storage options: Set up and use iCloud Photos.
Photo optimization also does not remove offline video downloads or app files from the iPad. If you need films or shows available without an internet connection, account for their local storage separately.

Use the iPad Storage screen to identify what is taking room before deleting files. Apple’s available options include:
- Remove watched offline videos you no longer need on the device.
- Delete unwanted app files from within the apps that contain them.
- Delete unused apps if you no longer need them or their stored data.
- Offload unused apps to remove the app while retaining its documents and data. The app icon remains, and you can tap it to reinstall the app.
Offloading is different from deleting: it preserves the app’s documents and data, so it may free less space than removing the app and its data. Review an app’s contents and your backup needs before deleting files.
