Choose iPad storage based on what you need to keep on the device—not just what you plan to install. For a light-use iPad with mostly streaming and cloud-synced files, 128GB may be a reasonable starting point. If you regularly keep videos offline, use many large apps, or store a substantial photo and video library locally, consider 256GB or more. For large creative projects or extensive local archives, size up according to the files you actually keep.
There is no single capacity Apple recommends for everyone. Check your current use, account for what you expect to add, and leave room for future files. Apple’s current U.S. iPad listing offers 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations, but options vary by model and market.
How to choose the right iPad capacity
Start with the storage used on an iPad you already own, if you have one, then add the apps, photos, videos, and downloads you expect to keep locally. Your decision depends less on the number of apps you use than on their files and the amount of content you want available without an internet connection.
- On your iPad, open Settings > General > iPad Storage.
- Review the available space and the amount used by apps. Consider other local content too, including photos, videos, Messages, iCloud Drive documents, and downloads.
- Decide what you will keep offline, and what you are comfortable streaming, syncing, removing, or offloading.
- Compare the capacities and prices for the exact iPad model you plan to buy. Do not assume every model offers the same choices.
Apple identifies apps, photos and videos, downloaded videos, iCloud Drive documents, and app files as common storage users. Some iPad apps are larger than their iPhone equivalents. Individual file sizes vary, so a generic per-photo or per-app estimate is not a reliable substitute for checking your own library and use.

Which capacity fits your use?
The recommendations below are practical starting points, not Apple-published rules. Apple’s U.S. store listing checked on October 4, 2026, shows these capacities; availability depends on the model and market.
| Capacity listed in the U.S. | May suit you if | Think carefully if |
|---|---|---|
| 128GB | You mainly browse, stream, use school or office apps, and keep few large files offline. | You expect a growing local photo or video library, frequent offline video downloads, or many large app files. |
| 256GB | You want more room for a larger app library, regular offline content, or a substantial local media collection. | You keep large creative projects or archives on the iPad; estimate those files rather than relying on a general rule. |
| 512GB | You need more capacity for large projects, long-term local archives, or frequent high-volume offline use. | You will mostly stream and sync content and do not expect to use the extra local space. |
These are the capacities shown on Apple’s U.S. iPad store listing, not a guarantee that all iPads or other regions offer them. The price difference between capacities depends on the exact model and current listing; compare those options when choosing.

Can iCloud storage replace iPad storage?
No. iPad storage is the device’s built-in capacity; iCloud storage is cloud space for items such as photos, files, and backups. Paying for more iCloud storage does not increase the iPad’s local capacity. Apple explains the distinction in its guide to iCloud storage and device storage.
iCloud Photos can reduce the space used by a photo library on the iPad. With Optimize iPad Storage enabled, Apple says full-resolution photos and videos can be stored in iCloud while space-saving copies remain on the device. This depends on available iCloud storage; it does not make cloud files equivalent to local files when you need them offline.

Apple says a new iCloud account includes 5GB of free storage for uses that include backups, iCloud Photos, and iCloud Drive. That figure describes cloud storage, not the iPad’s capacity, and service plans can change. See Apple’s guidance on managing photo and video storage.

Apps and their data count, as do photos and videos, downloaded videos, Messages, iCloud Drive documents, and files kept inside apps. Offline content is a deliberate trade-off: it is available without a connection, but uses local storage.

- Remove watched or unwanted offline video downloads.
- Review and delete files you no longer need inside apps and in iCloud Drive.
- Delete apps you no longer use, or turn on Offload Unused Apps in iPad storage settings. Apple says offloading keeps app data and leaves the app icon on the Home Screen; tap the icon to reinstall the app when needed.
- For photos and videos, check your library’s actual size and consider Optimize iPad Storage if you use iCloud Photos and have enough iCloud space.
