Ring’s general guidance says its devices need at least 1 Mbps to work, with recommended upload speeds ranging from 1 Mbps for 720p video to 15 Mbps for 4K. The right target depends on your exact doorbell model, the Wi-Fi signal at its location, and how much upload bandwidth other devices are using.

How many Mbps does a Ring doorbell need?

Ring’s general recommendations are per device and vary by video resolution:

Video resolution Recommended upload speed per device
720p 1 Mbps
1080p 2 Mbps
1536p 2.5 Mbps
2K 10 Mbps
4K 15 Mbps

These are Ring’s general resolution-based recommendations; the official guidance page does not state a publication year. Ring also says a device adjusts video quality to internet speed but needs at least 1 Mbps to work. That minimum is not a guarantee of consistently smooth performance, especially if the doorbell has a higher-resolution camera or the connection is shared. Ring’s Wi-Fi recommendations say to add the requirements for each Ring device when estimating the household’s demand.

Should you check upload or download speed?

Check upload speed first: the doorbell sends video from your home to Ring. Ring describes upload speed as the rate at which the device sends data, such as encrypted video. Some models also specify a download requirement, so consult the exact model’s specifications rather than assuming all Ring doorbells have the same threshold.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

These examples show why you should find your model’s stated requirement before judging an internet plan. Ring recommends checking the original box or the product page if you are unsure which speed target applies.

How to test speed where the doorbell is installed

  1. Identify the exact Ring doorbell model in the Ring app or on its product page, and note its stated upload and download requirements.
  2. Connect a phone to the same Wi-Fi network the doorbell uses and turn off any VPN. Run a speed test near the router, recording both upload and download results.
  3. Run the same test at the doorbell’s installation location and record both results again. Ring recommends comparing these two locations to help distinguish an internet-service issue from a Wi-Fi coverage issue.
  4. Compare the results with your model’s requirements. A much weaker result by the door than by the router suggests local Wi-Fi coverage may be limiting the connection; poor results in both locations point toward the internet connection or competing household use.

What if the doorbell still has connection problems?

Speed is poor near the router

Check whether other devices are using upload bandwidth for video calls, file transfers, camera footage, or gaming. Ring notes that other devices’ upload activity can affect the speed available to a Ring device. If the upload result remains poor, contact your internet provider. Ring’s upload-speed guidance also suggests rebooting the modem and router, then waiting five minutes before rebooting affected Ring devices. Read Ring’s upload-speed troubleshooting guidance.

Speed is acceptable near the router but weak at the door

This points more toward the Wi-Fi path inside your home than toward the internet plan. Ring’s signal-strength scale labels RSSI from 0 to -60 as great, -60 to -70 as okay, -70 to -80 as poor, and -80 or worse as very poor. Ring associates weaker readings with possible delays, interruptions, or intermittent service. Try moving the router or doorbell closer if practical; Ring also names Chime Pro and eero mesh routers as possible ways to improve coverage. These options can improve the local Wi-Fi signal, but they do not increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet provider.

Use Device Health as a diagnostic, not a universal speed target

In Ring Device Health, check the doorbell’s signal strength and, for supported products, its internet upload speed. Ring labels upload results as good above 10 Mbps, okay at 5–10 Mbps, and poor below 5 Mbps. Those are diagnostic categories for supported devices, not replacements for the requirement listed for your specific model.

What to compare when choosing a setup

  • Doorbell model and resolution: use the model’s own specifications alongside Ring’s general resolution guidance.
  • Measured upload and download: compare results near the router and at the installation location, and check download where the model specifies it.
  • Shared bandwidth: account for other Ring devices and household activity that uses upload capacity.
  • Wi-Fi signal at the door: distinguish a weak in-home wireless path from a plan with insufficient internet upload speed.
