NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported on December 17, 2025, that Perseverance’s wheel rotary actuators were certified for at least 37 more miles (60 kilometers) of optimal performance. Separately, engineers concluded that nearly all rover subsystems could operate until at least 2031. Those are hardware assessments—not a promise of a particular remaining distance, mission duration, or funding.
What NASA’s 37-mile finding means
The 37 miles (60 kilometers) refers specifically to the wheel rotary actuators: the mechanisms that turn Perseverance’s wheels. JPL said those actuators were certified to perform optimally for at least that additional distance. It is not a forecast of how far the whole rover will travel, nor a guaranteed remaining mileage. JPL was also testing comparable brake performance when it published its report. NASA/JPL’s December 17, 2025 report does not give an independent probability of the rover reaching a particular date or a validated expected remaining distance.
For context, the same report said Perseverance had traveled almost 25 miles (40 kilometers) after nearly five years on Mars. That is the distance already traveled as of the report’s publication, not a current odometer reading or a prediction of future travel.
What “at least 2031” says—and does not say
After evaluating nearly all of the rover’s subsystems over the preceding two years, engineers concluded that they could operate until at least 2031. This is an engineering assessment of hardware capability. It does not guarantee that every system will remain trouble-free, that the rover will operate continuously until then, or that NASA has authorized and funded a mission through 2031.

Hardware readiness is separate from mission approval
NASA’s 2026 Planetary Mission Senior Review report, published March 2, 2026, says the Mars 2020 prime mission was expected to conclude at the end of fiscal year 2026. The team proposed a first two-year extended mission for FY2027–FY2028. Reviewers considered high, guideline, and low budget profiles, described the rover and its instruments as generally healthy, and judged the proposed objectives achievable. The report is a review of a proposal; it is not evidence by itself that the extension was approved or funded.
The distinction matters: the engineering finding addresses what hardware may be capable of doing, while mission authorization and budgets determine what NASA plans and funds the spacecraft to do. The cited documents do not establish a funded operating period through 2031.

Why the extra driving matters
Perseverance is exploring Jezero Crater, where rocks preserve evidence of an ancient lake and river system. Its mission includes investigating whether the region was once habitable, looking for signs of past microbial life, collecting and caching samples, and preparing knowledge that may support future human missions. NASA says the rover collected more than two dozen geologically diverse rock samples during its first five surface years. NASA Science’s Mars 2020 mission page also describes the Cheyava Falls/Sapphire Canyon sample as containing potential biosignatures. “Potential” is important: it does not mean life has been confirmed; further data or study is needed before drawing that conclusion.

Steve Lee, Perseverance deputy project manager at JPL, said, “These tests show the rover is in excellent shape.” He added, “All the systems are fully capable of supporting a very long-term mission to extensively explore this fascinating region of Mars.”
