There is no single water or electricity figure for every washing machine. Consumption changes with the model, load size, programme, temperature and, for electricity, how much water the machine heats. As a US category benchmark, the currently posted ENERGY STAR comparison says a full-sized certified washer uses 14 gallons of water per load versus 20 gallons for a standard machine. That is a category comparison, not a promise for every model or cycle.

For your own appliance, use the model’s EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR data in the United States. In the European Union, read the A-to-G label: it reports electricity per 100 eco 40–60 cycles and water per eco 40–60 cycle. The label’s QR code opens the model record in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL).

What determines a washing machine’s consumption?

Two machines with the same drum capacity can use different amounts of water and electricity. The machine design sets a baseline, but your selected cycle determines how often it fills, how long it runs, how fast it spins and whether it heats water. A lightly loaded cold cycle can use far fewer resources than a full, hot, heavily soiled cycle on the same appliance.

  • Temperature: Heating incoming water is usually the largest electricity demand.
  • Programme: Eco cycles generally trade longer running times for lower water and energy input; intensive or sanitary cycles can use more.
  • Load size: A small load does not always reduce energy in proportion to the amount of laundry.
  • Machine design: Drum geometry, sensors, motor, heater and rinse strategy affect both water and electricity.
  • Spin speed and drying: Higher extraction can reduce moisture left for a separate dryer, while a washer-dryer’s drying phase adds a separate, substantial energy demand.

Because these factors differ, compare numbers only when the machine type, cycle, test method and reporting period match.

US water-use benchmarks

The currently posted ENERGY STAR consumer guidance gives a useful category reference: a full-sized ENERGY STAR-certified washer is listed at 14 gallons of water per load, compared with 20 gallons for a standard machine. ENERGY STAR does not attach a publication year to that comparison; treat it as the organization’s current posted benchmark, not as a guarantee for a particular model.

The figures describe full-sized residential washers in the US market. They are not a universal household average, and they do not establish what a compact machine, a specialty programme or a partially filled drum will use. Your model’s manual and label remain the authoritative sources for its cycles.

ENERGY STAR also says an average American family runs about 300 laundry loads per year. That is the page’s stated average, not a count that applies to every household. Multiplying a per-load figure by 300 can therefore provide only a rough scenario, not a personal bill forecast.

US electricity metrics and labels

EnergyGuide

For a US appliance, the yellow EnergyGuide label is designed to show estimated annual electricity use and operating cost under the label’s assumptions. Use it to compare machines of the same type and capacity, and check the assumptions printed on the label before applying the estimate to your home. Electricity prices and laundry frequency vary by location and household.

ENERGY STAR model data

The ENERGY STAR clothes-washer directory and its Product Finder provide model-level information. ENERGY STAR’s efficiency metrics include:

  • Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF): This combines the machine’s cycle and standby energy, the energy associated with heating hot water, and the energy needed to remove remaining moisture. A higher IMEF indicates better efficiency under the metric’s test basis.
  • Integrated Water Factor (IWF): This compares weighted water consumption with the washer’s cubic-foot capacity. A lower IWF indicates better water efficiency.

These factors are useful for comparing listed models, but they are not the same as a meter reading from your kitchen or laundry room. The ENERGY STAR criteria page identifies residential criteria levels current as of April 22, 2021. Do not describe those thresholds as newly updated for 2026.

EU energy and water figures

Since 1 March 2021, EU washing machines use a rescaled label from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). The label is built around the standardized eco 40–60 programme rather than a generic “per wash” number. It shows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • weighted electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh) per 100 eco 40–60 cycles;
  • water consumption in litres per eco 40–60 cycle;
  • rated capacity in kilograms;
  • the eco programme’s duration; and
  • airborne noise during spinning.

Scan the label’s QR code or search the model in the European Commission washing-machine information and EPREL system to inspect the underlying product record. The EU label, EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR metrics use different test conventions; an A rating cannot be converted directly into a US annual kWh figure without the relevant assumptions.

EU market estimates are not a reading from your appliance

The European Commission’s 2024 impact-accounting estimates describe the EU27 appliance stock in 2020. They estimate about 175 million washing machines and washer-dryers in use, completing 174 cycles per machine per year and using 1,161 billion litres of water in total. Average electricity use was estimated at 96 kWh per year after ecodesign and labelling measures, versus 159 kWh per year in a 2020 no-regulations scenario. Average water use was 6.3 cubic metres per year (9 litres per kilogram), stated as 52% below the counterfactual without those measures.

Those are EU27 stock and policy-impact estimates for 2020, published in the Commission’s 2024 accounting material. They are not live 2026 readings for an individual household, and they should not be mixed with US category figures.

Why water heating dominates electricity use

ENERGY STAR states that “Water heating consumes about 90% of the energy it takes to operate a clothes washer.” This is general consumer guidance: the exact share changes with incoming-water temperature, selected temperature, cycle design and the machine itself.

When the programme allows it, switching from hot to warm can cut energy use in half according to ENERGY STAR’s guidance, while cold washing reduces it further. These are guidance-level statements, not a measured result for every household. Cold water generally cleans well for ordinary laundry, although oily stains and sanitation-sensitive loads may need a different temperature or treatment.

The very hot sanitary cycle should therefore be reserved for situations that require it. Follow garment-care instructions and any medical or hygiene advice rather than lowering temperature when high heat is necessary.

How load size and programme choice change the result

Run fuller loads when practical

ENERGY STAR says washers use about the same energy regardless of load size and recommends full loads where possible. Running several small loads can therefore increase energy and water per garment. Do not overfill: clothes need room to circulate, and the appliance’s capacity rating and manual define a safe maximum.

Use eco 40–60 in the EU

The European Commission’s consumer guidance says to “Select the eco 40-60 programme” and wash full loads when possible. Eco programmes may take longer than quick cycles, but their tested resource use is the basis for the EU label and is intended to deliver normal cleaning with lower consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the cycle for the soil level

A quick cycle is not automatically the most efficient choice: it may use less time but can use a higher water temperature or require an additional wash if clothes are not clean. Match the programme to the fabric and soil level, and use the detergent quantity recommended for the load and water hardness.

How to compare two washing machines fairly

Use a single label system and a consistent comparison checklist. The following framework works whether you are shopping in the US or EU.

Item to compare US approach EU approach
Electricity Compare EnergyGuide estimated annual kWh and operating cost; use the same capacity and label assumptions. Compare kWh per 100 eco 40–60 cycles on the A-to-G label.
Water Use model specifications and ENERGY STAR data; IWF is lower-is-better for water efficiency. Compare litres per eco 40–60 cycle on the label or EPREL record.
Efficiency metric IMEF is higher-is-better; it includes machine, standby, hot-water and moisture-removal energy in the test calculation. The A-to-G class summarizes the standardized label test; inspect the numerical kWh and litre values as well.
Capacity Compare rated cubic-foot capacity with the loads you actually run. Compare rated kilogram capacity and the label’s eco-cycle values.
Time and noise Check the manufacturer’s cycle specifications. The label states eco-cycle duration and spin-noise level.

Also consider installation limits, door clearance, ventilation, normal load size and purchase price. A larger drum is not automatically more efficient if your household routinely runs it half empty.

Washer-only cycles versus washer-dryer cycles

Do not compare a washer-only programme with a complete wash-and-dry programme. EU rules set separate reporting for washing and for complete washing and drying. The latter includes the drying phase and can consume substantially more electricity. The distinction is set out in Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/2023.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When evaluating a washer-dryer, identify whether a figure covers washing alone, drying alone or the complete combined cycle. A number that omits drying cannot represent the energy required to finish a load ready to put away.

How to estimate your own annual use

For the most defensible estimate, start with the appliance’s own label rather than a generic internet average.

  1. Record the model number. It is usually on the door frame, rating plate or purchase documents.
  2. Find the applicable label. In the US, read the EnergyGuide and check the model in ENERGY STAR’s Product Finder. In the EU, scan the A-to-G label QR code and open the EPREL record.
  3. Match the programme basis. Note whether the figure is annual, per 100 cycles, per eco cycle or for a complete wash-and-dry cycle.
  4. Count your real usage. Estimate loads per week, typical temperature and the share of loads using special programmes.
  5. Scale the label number carefully. If a per-cycle value is supplied, multiply by your expected cycles. If an annual value is supplied, treat it as an estimate based on the label’s stated assumptions, not a guarantee.
  6. Apply your local tariff separately. Multiply estimated kWh by your electricity rate; include water and wastewater charges separately if you want a total operating-cost estimate.

For a quick check, a plug-in energy monitor can measure electricity drawn by a washer in your home, but it will not by itself measure water use or reveal how much of the electricity came from hot-water heating. Follow the monitor manufacturer’s safety instructions and never use an unsuitable device on a damp or overloaded circuit.

Practical ways to reduce consumption

  • Run full, correctly loaded drums instead of several partial loads.
  • Wash cold or warm when fabric care and soil level permit.
  • Use the eco 40–60 programme on EU-labelled machines for ordinary mixed laundry.
  • Avoid the very hot sanitary cycle unless hygiene requirements justify it.
  • Measure detergent according to the load and water hardness; excess detergent can trigger extra rinsing or leave residue.
  • Keep the washer level and maintain filters, hoses and seals so the machine can complete cycles efficiently.
  • Use the highest suitable spin speed when a separate dryer will follow, while respecting fabric-care instructions.
  • Air-dry when practical; a washer’s spin removes moisture without adding a separate heated drying phase.

Common mistakes when reading consumption claims

  • Calling one number “the average washer.” A per-cycle US benchmark, a US annual EnergyGuide estimate and an EU kWh-per-100-cycle label are different measurements.
  • Ignoring geography. The 14-versus-20-gallon comparison concerns the US product market, while the Commission’s stock figures concern EU27 appliances in 2020.
  • Comparing different cycles. Eco, cotton, quick, sanitary and wash-and-dry programmes do not share a test basis.
  • Assuming capacity equals efficiency. A high-capacity model saves resources only if you use that capacity effectively.
  • Treating a label class as a household bill. Your temperature choices, load frequency, utility rates and incoming-water conditions determine actual costs.

The reliable answer to “how much does my washing machine use?” is therefore the model-specific label value, interpreted with its cycle, temperature, capacity, geography and date. Generic figures are useful for orientation, but not for predicting an individual appliance’s bill.
