Owncast itself is open-source software; the cost is the infrastructure used to run it. For a small starting reference, DigitalOcean advertises shared-CPU VPS plans from $4 per month, but that is only a server-price floor—not proof that the cheapest plan can handle your encoding settings or audience. Your actual bill depends on CPU, outbound traffic, hosting region, and whether you add object storage. One important distinction: Owncast is a self-hosted live-streaming and chat server, not a YouTube hosting product. If your goal is specifically to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option described below.
What you are paying for
Owncast describes itself as a self-hosted live video streaming and chat server. Its software is open source, so the recurring expense is primarily the VPS that runs it, plus any optional storage or delivery service. Owncast cautions that there is no single cost or server requirement that fits every setup: encoding choices, bitrate, resolution, host hardware, traffic and audience all matter. See Owncast’s requirements guide and its project repository.
“For YouTube” needs qualification. The evidence here establishes Owncast as a self-hosted streaming server; it does not establish Owncast as a YouTube hosting product. If you mean running Owncast on a VPS as part of a workflow that also involves YouTube, treat the Owncast VPS and its traffic as separate costs, and confirm the YouTube workflow you intend to use.
Current VPS price anchors
DigitalOcean’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, advertises the following starting figures. They are provider prices, not workload guarantees; check current plan terms before purchasing.

| DigitalOcean plan reference | Advertised starting price | Published configuration detail | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared CPU Droplets | $4/month | Starting price only | A low-end server-price floor; not evidence that this plan will suit your encoding or audience. |
| Premium shared CPU | $7/month | 1 GB memory, 1 vCPU, 25 GB NVMe, 1,000 GB transfer | A concrete modest-plan reference. Check whether its CPU and included traffic fit your workload. |
| CPU-Optimized Droplets | $42/month | Starting price only | A higher-CPU price anchor for workloads needing more encoding headroom, not an Owncast minimum. |
These figures are only the VPS line item. A plan that looks inexpensive can become unsuitable if it cannot encode the output you want or its transfer allowance is exceeded.
What changes the monthly total
CPU and video encoding
Owncast can pass through a stream with minimal CPU use, while transcoding consumes CPU. Creating more output qualities or using more demanding compression increases encoding work. Resolution, codec, bitrate, preset and actual host hardware affect the load, so treat broad sizing examples as estimates rather than guarantees. For multiple qualities or heavier encoding, allow more CPU headroom and test the chosen configuration under the intended settings.

Outbound bandwidth to viewers
When the VPS serves video directly, outbound traffic scales with bitrate, viewing time and the number of viewers. A provider’s monthly transfer allowance and its sustained network capacity are separate checks: being within a monthly allowance does not by itself ensure enough throughput during a busy live event.
Region, transfer caps and overages
Allowances vary by provider, plan and location. Hetzner’s traffic documentation, accessed in 2026, lists 20 TB for EU CX, CPX and CAX cloud plans; US allowances range from 1–5 TB and Singapore allowances from 0.5–5 TB, depending on plan. The page also lists overage charges for some products. Check the allowance and overage terms for the exact server and region you choose at Hetzner’s traffic documentation.

Server location also affects the path to viewers: Owncast notes that distance can contribute to buffering. Compare locations against both your broadcaster and audience rather than choosing solely by base price.
Optional object storage
Owncast can use S3-compatible object storage to serve video to viewers, shifting viewer-facing delivery away from the VPS. That does not automatically reduce the total bill: storage and delivery charges depend on the storage provider’s terms. Compare the VPS-only design with the object-storage design using the actual egress and storage charges; there is no basis to assume the latter is always cheaper.

Your own upload connection
The broadcaster’s connection is not part of the VPS bill. Owncast recommends wired Ethernet for reliability and says upload speed should be at least 1.5 times the streaming bitrate to allow for fluctuations and overhead. For a 5,000 kbps stream, its guide gives 7.5 Mbps as the target. This is the connection from the broadcaster to the VPS, not the VPS’s outbound delivery to viewers.

Owncast’s published estimate is:
(bitrate in kbps × duration in seconds × viewers) ÷ 8,000,000 = GB

Its guide gives these approximate totals for a two-hour stream:
| Bitrate | 10 viewers | 25 viewers | 50 viewers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,000 kbps | 18 GB | 45 GB | 90 GB |
| 4,000 kbps | 36 GB | 90 GB | 180 GB |
| 6,000 kbps | 54 GB | 135 GB | 270 GB |
These are Owncast’s traffic estimates, not provider prices. Multiply the relevant per-event estimate by the number of events per month, then compare the result with the selected plan’s transfer allowance. For example, four two-hour events at 4,000 kbps and 25 concurrent viewers work out to 360 GB (90 GB × 4). That is arithmetic using Owncast’s example, not a measured bill.
Also check peak outbound throughput. Owncast’s formula is bitrate in kbps × viewers ÷ 1,000 = Mbps. At 5,000 kbps and 200 viewers, that is 1,000 Mbps before overhead. Owncast notes that most VPS providers offer 1 Gbps ports and estimates roughly 200 viewers at 5,000 kbps on such a port; actual plan limits and overhead can reduce practical capacity, so do not treat that estimate as a guaranteed viewer count.
How to frame a realistic budget
- Testing or a very small audience: Use the advertised low-cost VPS figure as a floor for the server charge only. Confirm the selected server can run the intended setup before relying on it.
- Light production with passthrough or one output: Compare a modest shared-CPU plan’s processing capacity and included transfer against your stream bitrate, monthly hours and peak concurrency. Passthrough can reduce CPU work; it does not remove viewer-driven bandwidth use.
- Several qualities or heavier encoding: Budget for more CPU headroom and test the configuration. The $42/month CPU-optimized starting price above is one provider anchor, not a minimum set by Owncast.
- Growing audience or limited transfer: Compare direct VPS delivery with an object-storage setup, including that provider’s storage and delivery charges.
Before selecting a plan, compare its monthly base price, vCPU type and memory, region-specific transfer allowance, sustained port speed, overage rate, and location relative to broadcaster and audience. The total cannot be pinned down without your bitrate, monthly streaming hours, peak concurrent viewers, output qualities, hosting region and storage choice.

If the actual goal is a pre-recorded YouTube stream that stays live 24/7, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to managing a VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card required. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
