Running a PC continuously for a YouTube loop uses an estimated 175.2 kWh per year at 20 watts, 350.4 kWh at 40 watts, and 700.8 kWh at 80 watts. At the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2025 average residential rate of 17.30¢ per kWh, that works out to about $30.31, $60.62, or $121.24 per year in energy costs. Your bill depends on your electricity rate and the PC’s actual wall draw.

Estimated electricity use and cost

The estimates below assume the PC draws the stated amount continuously for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Monthly use is annual use divided by 12. Costs use $0.173 per kWh, the EIA’s 2025 U.S. average residential electricity price; the EIA notes that the underlying 2025 price data are preliminary. These are energy-only estimates, not complete bill predictions.

Assumed wall draw Energy per day Energy per average month Energy per year Cost per day Cost per average month Cost per year
20 W 0.48 kWh 14.6 kWh 175.2 kWh About $0.08 $2.53 $30.31
40 W 0.96 kWh 29.2 kWh 350.4 kWh About $0.17 $5.05 $60.62
80 W 1.92 kWh 58.4 kWh 700.8 kWh About $0.33 $10.10 $121.24

The wattages are scenarios, not measured or typical draws for a particular YouTube-loop PC. The EIA defines a kilowatt-hour as a kilowatt used for one hour; energy use is power accumulated over time. EIA: Measuring electricity.

Calculate the cost using your electricity rate

Use this formula for a continuous load:

Energy (kWh) = power (W) ÷ 1,000 × hours of use

Then multiply the resulting kWh by the price per kWh that applies to your home. For example, at 25¢ per kWh, the estimated annual energy-only costs are $43.80 at 20 W, $87.60 at 40 W, and $175.20 at 80 W.

  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

The EIA’s 2025 U.S. average residential rate was 17.30¢/kWh, but an average is not necessarily your utility’s rate. The EIA describes its average retail price as a weighted revenue-to-sales measure, not an individual customer tariff. Prices also vary by location: its 2025 state averages across all customer types ranged from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii. The data are preliminary, and the state figures are all-sector averages, not residential rates. EIA: Prices and factors affecting prices; EIA Electric Power Annual, final 2024 data.

Taxes, fixed charges, time-of-use pricing, and billing rules can change the amount on your bill. The table isolates the energy cost attributable to the assumed load and does not include those factors.

What 20, 40, and 80 watts tell you—and what they do not

These figures only show what happens if a setup continuously draws the stated power at the wall. They do not establish the draw of a specific computer. Actual consumption can vary with the PC and its components, display arrangement, browser settings, playback quality, and operating conditions. A monitor or other equipment left on with the PC adds to the total if it is included in the measured setup.

Measure the full setup for a personal estimate

If you need a closer cost estimate, measure the equipment at the outlet while it is playing the loop under representative conditions. Include the PC and any display or peripherals whose electricity cost you want to count. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can show outlet consumption; the EIA also explains that utility meters measure consumption and some advanced smart meters can track individual-device use.
