Your bill depends on the instance, region, operating system, runtime, stream bitrate, network path, and any added storage or services. For a server that only sends a feed to YouTube, estimate EC2 compute and the source’s outbound transfer; do not count YouTube viewers as if EC2 were serving them.
What an EC2-only YouTube stream actually costs
For a basic setup, EC2 runs an encoder or relay that pushes a video feed to YouTube Live. YouTube receives that feed and distributes playback to viewers. Those are separate traffic paths: audience size does not multiply EC2 egress when viewers watch on YouTube.
If AWS also encodes, packages, originates, or delivers the video to viewers, model those services separately. Some AWS architectures use MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront; they are not automatically required to send a stream to YouTube. AWS’s live-streaming implementation guide includes a one-hour event example with 1,000 viewers totaling $69.74 under its stated US East (N. Virginia) assumptions, of which $67.24 is CloudFront distribution. That is an AWS viewer-delivery example, not the cost of a YouTube-only EC2 source. AWS live-streaming implementation guide
How to estimate your monthly EC2 bill
1. Calculate compute
Choose the AWS region, instance type, operating system, and pricing model, then multiply the applicable hourly rate by actual billed hours. For planning, a 24/7 month is roughly 730 hours. AWS says On-Demand instance billing runs from launch until stop or termination; listed operating systems use per-second billing with a 60-second minimum. Rates vary by region and configuration, so use the Amazon EC2 pricing page and AWS Pricing Calculator for your setup rather than treating one instance price as universal.

- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
2. Estimate source-transfer volume
Multiply the stream bitrate by the seconds streamed, then divide by eight to convert bits to bytes. A steady 6 Mbps source running for 30 days produces about 243,000 decimal GB (roughly 243 TB) before protocol overhead:
6 megabits/second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 = 1,944,000 megabytes = 243,000 decimal gigabytes

- YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES ON DISPLAY - Brighten your space (and your day) by turning your home screen into a photo slideshow that displays your favorite memories. Auto curate your images and show off your favorite family memories.
This is a volume calculation, not a quoted AWS bill. Actual encoder bitrate and billing conventions can change the result. If AWS treats the route as internet data transfer out, apply the current allowance and regional rates. AWS lists 100 GB/month of internet data transfer out free, aggregated across AWS services and regions, subject to stated exceptions. Consult the EC2 pricing page for current terms and rates.
3. Add storage and supporting services
An instance-only estimate does not include every possible charge. Depending on the deployment, add EBS storage, a public IPv4 address, monitoring, snapshots, and any other services you use. AWS points to separate EBS and CloudWatch pricing, so check those costs for your actual configuration.

4. Keep viewer delivery separate
When YouTube is the destination and serves the audience, estimate the EC2-to-YouTube source path—not hypothetical delivery to every viewer. If your architecture instead sends playback to viewers through AWS, include the relevant media and CDN charges. AWS’s live-streaming implementation guide describes such a delivery architecture; its example totals should not be applied to a YouTube-only feed.
How stream quality changes the estimate
A higher source bitrate sends more data from EC2 to YouTube. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendation ranges, not mandatory settings or an AWS price. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, and says it transcodes incoming live streams for different devices and network conditions. Consequently, the source bitrate affects EC2 transfer, while viewer playback bitrate is not EC2 egress when YouTube distributes the stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings documentation.

Stream key and operational considerations
YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder configuration, and treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Follow YouTube’s current live encoder setup guidance. Your EC2 estimate should also reflect whether you need enough CPU headroom for encoding, and whether your deployment needs recovery measures if the encoder or connection fails.

Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube stream built from uploaded video rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is a managed alternative to maintaining your own EC2 encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video in the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it accepts the quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
