The sticker price is only the starting point. In the U.S., a first-year setup with one game and online multiplayer starts at $469.98 before tax for a Nintendo Switch 2, $679.98 for a PS5 Digital Edition, and $729.98 for the disc PS5. Those figures exclude the game on PlayStation and any optional accessories. Xbox can be the least expensive route through Series S, but Microsoft’s current pricing update does not state a U.S. MSRP, so verify the live store price before budgeting.
What the “real” cost includes
A useful first-year budget counts every purchase needed to play the way you expect, then separates one-time spending from renewals:
First-year total = console + games + required or desired accessories + 12 months of online service + sales tax.

“Required” depends on your use case. A single-player buyer may need only the console and a game. Someone who wants online multiplayer may need an annual membership, while a digital-library owner may quickly need more storage. A second controller, headset, or camera is optional but often becomes part of a comfortable setup.

Sony vice president Isabelle Tomatis attributed the 2026 increase to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” That makes the effective date important: an older article or retailer listing may show a different PS5 price.
What is included in the box
Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 package as including the console, left and right Joy-Con 2 controllers, a Joy-Con 2 grip, straps, dock, Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, AC adapter and USB-C charging cable. Internal storage is 256 GB. Additional capacity uses microSD Express cards, not just any older microSD card.
The $449.99 standalone system does not include a game. The $499.99 Mario Kart World bundle supplies a digital download code, so its $50 premium is effectively the cost of adding that game at purchase.
Xbox Series X
Microsoft’s package documentation lists the Series X console, one Xbox Wireless Controller, an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and a power cord. Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories are compatible. A dedicated Storage Expansion Card adds capacity while maintaining the console’s custom-SSD performance; its price is an additional hardware cost.
PlayStation 5
The prices above identify the console configurations, but the supplied Sony pricing information does not enumerate every item in each retail box. Before ordering, check the specific listing for the included controller, cables, stand and any regional package difference. For budgeting, the bare-minimum examples assume you use the standard controller and cables supplied with the package.

Bare-minimum first-year budgets
This scenario assumes one game, the included controller and cables, and the cheapest annual online plan when online multiplayer is wanted. Game prices and tax are not supplied as fixed figures, so they remain separate rather than being guessed.

If you will never use online multiplayer or other membership benefits, remove the annual service from the relevant row. The Switch 2 bundle demonstrates why the cheapest console is not always the cheapest ready-to-play package: the standalone system is $50 less, but you must still buy a game.
What a comfortable setup adds
A practical household setup usually goes beyond the bare minimum. Build it from the items you will actually use rather than assuming every buyer needs every accessory.

To calculate a comfortable first-year budget, add the prices of two or more games, an extra controller, a headset or camera where relevant, and storage expansion to the appropriate bare-minimum row. Keep those purchases listed separately from the annual membership so you can see which costs disappear if you simplify the setup.
Online multiplayer and subscription prices
PlayStation Plus Essential
PlayStation Plus Essential costs $10.99 for one month, $27.99 for three months or $79.99 for 12 months in the U.S. Sony lists online multiplayer, monthly games, exclusive discounts, cloud storage and Share Play among Essential benefits. The annual option is the lowest stated cost for a full year, so use $79.99 in a first-year model rather than multiplying the monthly price.
Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo Switch Online individual membership costs $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months or $19.99 for 12 months in the U.S. Nintendo also lists a 12-month Expansion Pack individual membership at $49.99, standard family membership at $34.99 and Expansion Pack family membership at $79.99. The Expansion Pack is an optional tier; the $19.99 individual plan is the relevant annual figure for a basic online-multiplayer budget.

Switch 2 GameChat was open to everyone without membership only through the end of March 2026. After that period, Nintendo Switch Online is required, and a compatible USB-C camera is sold separately if you want video.
Xbox
The retrieved official Xbox pages do not expose a numeric U.S. subscription price. Do not substitute a remembered figure: open the current Xbox store listing when you buy and use that amount in the equation. Microsoft’s 2026 update says component costs for storage and memory increased more than 2.5 times and explains that consoles are typically sold below manufacturing cost, so Xbox pricing and plan details should be checked close to purchase.

Physical, digital and bundled games
A console with no game is not a playable first-year plan unless you intend to use free software or already own compatible titles. Add at least one game to every comparison, then identify whether it is a physical disc, a digital purchase or a bundle code. The Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle is unusually easy to model because the game is explicitly included; the other prices in the available data do not establish a universal game price.

Storage planning
Storage is a delayed cost: the console works on day one, but a digital library can force an expansion purchase later. Switch 2 starts with 256 GB and accepts microSD Express cards. Xbox Series X accepts a dedicated Storage Expansion Card designed to preserve custom-SSD performance. For either platform, price the storage accessory only if your expected library makes the internal capacity insufficient.
Resale, refurbished and trade-in choices
Used or refurbished hardware can lower the upfront total, while resale or trade-in can reduce the net cost when you upgrade. Inspect warranty coverage, return periods, controller condition, drive health and included cables. A low purchase price is not a saving if a missing controller or failing storage device must be replaced immediately.
A repeatable calculation you can use at checkout
- Choose the exact console configuration. Record the current U.S. price, edition and date. For PS5, distinguish the $599.99 Digital Edition, $649.99 PS5 and $899.99 PS5 Pro.
- List included hardware. Remove the cost of controllers, cables and docks that are already in the box, but verify the retailer’s package contents.
- Add games. Enter the actual prices for the number of games you plan to own in year one. Treat a bundle’s included download code as one supplied game, not as a second purchase.
- Add only necessary accessories. Include a second controller, headset, camera or storage expansion when your use case requires it.
- Add the annual online plan. Use $79.99 for PlayStation Plus Essential or $19.99 for individual Nintendo Switch Online when those plans fit your needs. For Xbox, retrieve the live price rather than estimating.
- Apply sales tax. Multiply the taxable subtotal by your state and local rate, accounting for any retailer-specific tax treatment.
- Separate renewals. Mark the membership and any other subscription as recurring charges that will return in year two; games and hardware are normally one-time purchases unless you replace them.
Which platform is cheapest for you?
- Lowest stated entry price: Switch 2 at $449.99, but add a game unless you choose the $499.99 Mario Kart World bundle.
- Lowest stated PlayStation first-year base: PS5 Digital Edition at $679.98 before a game and tax when paired with annual PlayStation Plus Essential.
- Disc-based PlayStation option: The $649.99 PS5 costs $50 more than the Digital Edition before games and membership, which may matter if you buy or resell physical games.
- Premium PlayStation option: PS5 Pro raises the same base calculation to $979.98 before a game and tax.
- Xbox: Series S is identified by Microsoft as the lowest-cost Xbox route, but a fair dollar comparison requires current console and subscription prices that were not stated in the retrieved official update.
Compare the complete package, not just the console label. A platform that looks cheaper can lose that advantage after adding several games, a second controller, storage, a headset and a year of online service.
Bottom line for a 2026 U.S. budget
Set aside at least $469.98 before tax for a Switch 2 with one year of basic online service, or $519.98 for the Mario Kart World bundle with that service included in the calculation. For PlayStation, the comparable base is $679.98 for the Digital Edition, $729.98 for the standard PS5 or $979.98 for PS5 Pro, each before buying a game and paying tax. Then add the accessories and storage your household will actually use, and treat online membership as a renewal rather than a one-time purchase. Xbox may undercut those figures through Series S, but its exact current U.S. hardware and subscription prices must be verified at purchase.
