There is no reliable universal cost: measure the Chromebook, charger, and any always-on accessories at the wall, then multiply their average watts by the hours they run and your electricity rate. For continuous operation, each average watt uses 0.72 kWh in a 30-day month. That estimates electricity only—not internet service, equipment, or a streaming service.
Calculate the electricity cost from measured power
The U.S. Department of Energy explains that energy use in kilowatt-hours is watts multiplied by hours, divided by 1,000. It also describes using meters to measure consumption. DOE energy-use guidance
- Measure the full setup. Plug the Chromebook and its charger into a plug-in electricity usage monitor. Include any accessories that must stay on, such as a USB hub or external storage. Measure while the stream is running under the conditions you expect to use.
- Use average wall power, not charger capacity. A charger’s maximum wattage does not tell you how much electricity the running setup uses. Use the meter’s measured average watts if available.
- Convert watts to monthly energy. For a 30-day month, multiply average watts by 0.72 to get kWh. For 365 days, multiply average watts by 8.76.
- Apply your electricity rate. Multiply the resulting kWh by the price per kWh on your bill. If your rate varies by time or includes usage tiers, use the rate that applies to this additional consumption.
For example, if a meter hypothetically reads an average of 10 W, continuous operation uses 7.2 kWh in a 30-day month and 87.6 kWh over 365 days. Multiply those quantities by your own electricity rate. The 10 W figure is only an example for the arithmetic; it is not a measured or typical Chromebook result.
Can an old Chromebook running Linux stream reliably for 24 hours?
It depends on the specific model, Linux setup, streaming workload, and internet connection. “Linux” on a Chromebook may refer to ChromeOS’s Linux development environment, which Google describes as a Debian environment for development tools. Google’s Chromebook Help documentation says hardware acceleration, including GPU and video decode, is not supported in that environment. Google Chromebook Help: Set up Linux on your Chromebook

OBS lists OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and X11 or Wayland among its Linux requirements, but meeting those basic requirements does not guarantee that a device can stream. Its documentation says CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS system requirements
In practical terms, a Chromebook that can open OBS may still struggle to encode continuously, especially if it must handle a complex scene or high resolution. Lowering resolution and frame rate can reduce the encoding and upload burden, but it does not establish that an unspecified old device will remain stable all day. Test the actual setup before relying on it.

Choose YouTube settings and test the stream
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest and constant bitrate encoding. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps, 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 ingest options; whether those are usable depends on the encoder and device. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Start with a resolution and frame rate the Chromebook can encode without sustained overload; do not assume that a setting listed by YouTube is suitable for your device.
- Check that your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate, with room for normal network variation.
- Test with audio and movement resembling the intended stream, as YouTube advises, and monitor stream health in Live Control Room.
- Run the test long enough to reveal heat, dropped frames, encoder overload, or connection interruptions before treating the setup as dependable.
YouTube’s encoder workflow and live-stream setup guidance are described in YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Plan for the archive as well as the live stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for longer broadcasts, so do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will produce a complete video-on-demand archive. If a complete archive matters, plan shorter sessions and verify the current Live Control Room behavior for your channel. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Other costs and alternatives
The electricity calculation does not include internet service, equipment purchase or replacement, or a separate streaming service. Whether local streaming costs less than a service cannot be determined without your measured watts, local electricity tariff, and verified service pricing.
