Short answer: there is no single total for every always-on podcast stream; usage depends on its bitrate, whether it includes video, and how many hours it plays. As a worked example, Spotify’s stated podcast quality of approximately 96 kbit/s works out to about 43.2 MB per hour, 1.04 GB per day, or 31.1 GB over 30 days. That is a bitrate-based estimate, not a measurement of every live stream or Indian broadband connection.
Estimated data use at common podcast bitrates
For an always-on stream, multiply its hourly data use by the hours it actually plays. A 30-day month contains 720 hours if the stream runs continuously.

Spotify describes podcast quality as approximately 96 kbit/s on most devices and 128 kbit/s in its web player; its low mobile/tablet setting is approximately 24 kbit/s. The table estimates data from those stated bitrates, rather than measuring every browser, app, or live broadcast. Spotify’s audio-quality guidance notes that higher streaming quality uses more data.
How to calculate your own monthly total
For a constant bitrate, convert kilobits per second into bytes by multiplying by the seconds streamed and dividing by eight. At 96 kbit/s, the calculation for one hour is 96 × 3,600 ÷ 8 = 43,200 kB, or about 43.2 MB using decimal units. Multiply that hourly figure by your listening or streaming hours.

- 24 hours at 96 kbit/s: 43.2 MB × 24 = about 1.04 GB.
- 720 hours (30 days) at 96 kbit/s: 43.2 MB × 720 = about 31.1 GB.
- If it runs only 12 hours each day for 30 days, use 360 hours, not 720: 43.2 MB × 360 = about 15.6 GB.
These estimates cover encoded audio payload. Network and app overhead, buffering, and differences between decimal and binary units used in device displays can make actual or displayed totals differ somewhat. The arithmetic is derived from Spotify’s published bitrate, not from a test on an Indian ISP.
Why the real figure can be higher or lower
Bitrate and audio quality
Bitrate is the main input in the calculation: a higher bitrate transfers more audio data each second. A service may encode the same program differently from Spotify, or let listeners select another quality, so Spotify’s settings are useful examples rather than specifications for every podcast or live radio stream.

Audio-only versus video
A video podcast can use substantially more data than audio alone because it also transfers video. Spotify says its audio-only option for video podcasts omits the video stream. If conserving broadband data matters, check that the service is actually playing audio only.
Platform, encoding, and listening hours
A live radio feed, a podcast episode replayed continuously, and an app that re-encodes audio can have different bitrates. Apple Podcasts for Creators recommends different RSS audio bit-rate ranges based on channel count and sample rate, and notes the trade-off: smaller bitrates make smaller, more streaming-friendly files but can introduce audible artifacts. Those file-encoding recommendations do not establish the bitrate of every live broadcaster. Your total also scales directly with the hours played.

How the estimate fits Indian broadband plans
A monthly estimate of roughly 31.1 GB at 96 kbit/s is useful only alongside the terms of your actual connection. TRAI explains that an “unlimited” broadband plan can still have a fair-usage threshold: after the allowance is exhausted, speed may be reduced. Providers must clearly specify the threshold and the speed after it is reached. Check the fair-use limit and post-threshold speed in your provider’s current plan terms. TRAI’s broadband FAQ explains fair-speed usage limits.
TRAI’s consumer FAQ also says providers must indicate typical download and upload speeds in tariff offers; it does not set one minimum download or upload speed in that FAQ. Its tariff portal provides provider and plan lookup, but available plans and terms depend on location, provider, connection type, and current filings. Use the TRAI tariff portal to look up relevant offers, then confirm the current terms with your provider.

Why might my device show a slightly different total?
The table uses rounded decimal estimates from bitrate. Network overhead, app behavior, buffering, and whether a device reports decimal or binary units can shift the displayed number.
Does the 150–175 MB figure apply to my podcast?
Not necessarily. It is a 2017 broad music-or-radio estimate from a PhiMetrics Technologies response hosted by TRAI, not a measurement of a particular podcast stream.
