A nonstop YouTube sermon stream can use roughly 2.6 TB in 30 days at 720p30 or 4.6 TB at 1080p30, using YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates plus 128 kbps stereo audio. These are calculated estimates for the church’s continuous outgoing feed, before network overhead—not data used by viewers watching the stream.
How the monthly estimate is calculated
Continuous data use depends on the bitrate actually sent by the encoder and how long it runs. At a steady bitrate, 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days transfers 324 GB in decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes).
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 8 Mbps of H.264 video for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Its advanced settings guidance lists 128 kbps for stereo audio. Adding audio gives total example bitrates of 8.128 Mbps and 14.128 Mbps, respectively. YouTube’s live encoder guidance provides the settings; the monthly data totals below are calculations from those bitrates, not published YouTube usage guarantees.
| Outgoing stream example | Calculation for 30 days | Approximate data transferred |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 H.264 video at 8 Mbps + 128 kbps stereo audio | 8.128 Mbps × 324 GB per Mbps | 2,633 GB, or about 2.63 TB |
| 1080p30 H.264 video at 14 Mbps + 128 kbps stereo audio | 14.128 Mbps × 324 GB per Mbps | 4,577 GB, or about 4.58 TB |
Allow for some additional network-accounted use: actual bitrate can vary, and transport overhead and retransmissions add traffic. Your ISP’s method of counting usage can also affect the reported total. A shorter run scales with hours streamed: at these example bitrates, each hour is about 3.66 GB at 720p30 or 6.36 GB at 1080p30, before overhead.

Whose data is this—and upload or download?
These estimates are for the church’s outgoing upload from its encoder to YouTube. YouTube transcodes a live stream into output formats for viewers, who use data on their own internet connections. Their viewing does not multiply the church’s outgoing feed estimate.
The figures do not describe a viewer watching a sermon, nor all internet use at the church. Other devices, browsing, calls, and concurrent services add their own usage.

Will an Indian broadband plan handle a nonstop stream?
Check the exact plan’s data allowance or fair-use policy, any overage terms, and the speed or charges after the allowance is reached. A stream at the example settings can transfer multiple terabytes in a 30-day month. TRAI material discusses usage-limited broadband plans and how speed needs vary by application, location, and concurrent users, but it does not establish the allowance or throttling terms of your particular ISP plan. See the TRAI broadband recommendations and TRAI-hosted consumer submission for context; check your provider’s current terms for the actual plan.
Check sustained upload, not just advertised download
The encoder has to send the stream continuously. An advertised download speed alone does not show whether the connection can sustain the required upload. Test at the church, on the network the encoder will use, at a normally busy time, and with typical church traffic present. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. No single broadband speed or plan can be recommended without the location, provider, local network, other usage, and configured bitrate.

Choose stream settings using the actual bitrate
“HD” is not a precise data-use figure. Use the configured outgoing bitrate, including audio where the video bitrate excludes it, and multiply by the time the stream runs. Higher resolutions or frame rates may require more bitrate; the figures above apply only to the stated 720p30 and 1080p30 examples.
- For a 720p30 H.264 example, budget from 8 Mbps video plus 128 kbps stereo audio.
- For a 1080p30 H.264 example, budget from 14 Mbps video plus 128 kbps stereo audio.
- If your encoder uses a different bitrate, substitute that actual value in the calculation. Every sustained 1 Mbps adds about 324 decimal GB over 30 days.
YouTube’s guidance is not an India-specific upload-speed prescription. Test the chosen settings on the venue’s connection and check stream health before relying on a continuous broadcast.

Live camera sermon or prerecorded loop?
A live sermon normally captures a camera and audio at the church, encodes them there, and uploads the feed continuously. That makes the church’s broadband connection and local equipment part of the ongoing stream path.
A prerecorded loop is a different workflow: uploaded video can be streamed to YouTube from a cloud service instead of being continuously encoded and sent from church equipment. StreamNeo is one option for uploaded-video loops on YouTube; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. A secondary discussion of 24/7 church YouTube streaming describes this kind of service, but verify current service details directly. Topic-specific discussion.

Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded sermon loop rather than a live camera, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload the recording or make a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home or at church; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
Why older video-use figures can mislead
A Reliance Jio submission hosted by TRAI quoted historical examples of 38 MB per five-minute 720p video and 62 MB per five-minute 1080p video. Those are viewing examples in a regulatory submission, not current official YouTube encoder guidance and not a sound basis for budgeting a nonstop live feed. The TRAI-hosted Jio submission.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting a data or stream problem
The plan allowance runs out sooner than expected
- Compare the encoder’s actual bitrate and stream hours with the monthly calculation; do not rely only on a resolution label.
- Check whether the ISP counts upload toward the allowance and review current fair-use, post-limit speed, and overage terms.
- Include other church traffic and some margin for overhead and bitrate variation.
The stream drops or looks unstable
- Test sustained upload from the venue during busy hours, with normal network use active.
- Check encoder output bitrate and YouTube stream health; a connection that appears adequate on a download test may not sustain the upload.
- If the stream is a prerecorded loop, consider whether a cloud-hosted workflow better fits the need than leaving local equipment and broadband to run continuously.
