For watching, Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 5 Mbps, while Twitch recommends 7–12 Mbps or higher download speed for viewing 1080p60. For a YouTube Live broadcast, the recommended outgoing encoder bitrate is 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 12 Mbps at 1080p60 with AV1/H.265; with H.264, the recommendations are 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps. These are platform-specific recommendations, not guarantees or universal broadband-plan requirements.
First, distinguish watching from broadcasting
Watching uses your internet connection’s download capacity: video data travels from the service to your device. Broadcasting uses upload capacity: your encoder sends video data from your connection to the streaming platform. A fast download speed does not establish that your upload is fast enough, or vice versa.
These figures also describe different things. Netflix and Twitch give viewer-side connection recommendations. YouTube’s figures are encoder bitrate settings for a live broadcast. They should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
Bandwidth for watching 1080p video
Netflix
Netflix recommends a stable internet connection of at least 5 Mbps for Full HD (1080p) playback. Its guidance also gives 3 Mbps or higher for 720p and 15 Mbps or higher for 4K. These are Netflix recommendations; they do not guarantee a particular picture quality in every home or on every device.

Twitch
For watching Twitch at 1080p60, Twitch recommends download speed of 7–12 Mbps or higher. This is a Twitch-specific viewer recommendation, not a universal threshold for all 1080p video. Twitch notes that a viewer’s download speed determines video quality, so high upload speed alone will not prevent playback problems.
Bandwidth for broadcasting live in 1080p
For a live broadcast, compare the encoder’s outgoing bitrate with the upload capacity your connection actually delivers. YouTube’s recommendations vary by frame rate and codec:

These are YouTube encoder settings, not a promise that any connection with the same advertised upload speed will sustain a broadcast. YouTube advises broadcasters to run a speed test to test upload bitrate. Measure the upload direction, not just download, and judge the connection you receive in practice rather than relying only on the plan’s headline speed.
Why the same 1080p setting can need different bandwidth
- Frame rate: 1080p60 generally calls for a higher bitrate than 1080p30 in YouTube’s recommendations.
- Codec: YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate is higher than its AV1/H.265 recommendation at the same listed resolution and frame rate.
- Connection conditions: Other household traffic and fluctuations in connection stability can affect the capacity available to a video or broadcast. Netflix also notes that multiple factors can affect playback quality.
- Computer capability: Twitch advises broadcasters to account for their computer hardware; a higher frame rate requires more encoding power. Internet capacity is only one part of a reliable broadcast.
The supplied platform guidance does not establish one universal extra margin to add to these figures. Instead, test the relevant direction under realistic conditions and choose settings your connection and hardware can sustain.

Check the right speed before changing plans
- If you are watching: check your actual download speed, then compare it with the recommendation for the service and playback target. For Netflix 1080p, that is at least 5 Mbps stable; for Twitch 1080p60, Twitch recommends 7–12 Mbps or higher download.
- If you are broadcasting: check actual upload speed and compare it with the YouTube encoder bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. A download result does not answer this question.
- Test during ordinary use: account for other activity sharing the connection and for instability. A result from a quiet moment may not represent the capacity available when other devices are active.
- Adjust the stream settings if needed: select the frame rate and codec you can sustain, taking account of both upload capacity and encoding hardware. Retest after a change.
