MLB’s 2026 “robot umpire” system did not replace the home-plate umpire: the umpire made the initial ball-or-strike call, and the batter, pitcher, or catcher could immediately challenge it. The Associated Press reported that 5,686 of 10,557 challenges were overturned—a 54% success rate on challenges, not a finding that 54% of all pitches or umpire calls were wrong.
How MLB’s ABS challenge system works
MLB adopted the challenge format for all 2026 Spring Training, Championship Season, and Postseason games. The home-plate umpire still calls each pitch. If an eligible player disagrees, a challenge triggers an automated check of the pitch’s tracked location against the batter’s strike zone.
Who may challenge, and when
- Only the batter, pitcher, or catcher involved in the call may immediately signal a challenge.
- Coaches and teammates cannot initiate or advise a challenge.
- Each team starts with two challenges. A successful challenge is retained; an unsuccessful one uses a challenge.
- A team that has none receives a fresh challenge when an extra inning begins.
These rules are set out in MLB’s announcement of the 2026 format.
What the cameras check
Twelve Hawk-Eye cameras track the pitch. MLB defines the strike zone as a 17-inch-wide rectangle individualized to the batter’s height: its top is 53.5% of measured height and its bottom is 27%. The system evaluates the ball’s position as it passes the middle of home plate. If any part of the ball touches any part of the defined zone, the pitch is a strike.

The home-plate umpire announces the challenge, and the result appears on the stadium scoreboard and broadcast graphics. MLB said the check takes approximately 15 seconds. The technology reviews a challenged call; it does not make every pitch call automatically.
What the 54% overturn rate means
In its October 2, 2026 season-end report, the Associated Press counted 5,686 overturned calls among 10,557 challenges, or 54%. That denominator is challenges, not pitches, plate appearances, or every ball-and-strike decision in the season. The figure therefore describes how often an appeal succeeded, not the overall accuracy of human umpires.

The official Baseball Savant ABS Challenge Dashboard is mutable. A snapshot accessed October 3, 2026 showed 8,446 attempts, 4,525 overturns, 3,921 confirmed calls, and the same 54% rate. Those dashboard counts are lower than the AP’s later season-end totals; the two sets of counts should not be combined.
Which players succeeded most often?
The season-end rates varied by the role of the player challenging. Catchers had the highest aggregate success rate, while pitchers had the lowest. These percentages show how often challenges by each group were overturned; they do not show how many challenges each group made.

AP also reported that William Contreras led in volume with 185 challenges and 105 successful appeals. Among catchers with at least 75 challenges, J.T. Realmuto had an 81% success rate and Tyler Stephenson had 68%. The minimum-attempt threshold matters: a rate among players who challenged at least 75 times is not a ranking of every catcher.
How challenge use changed during games and the season
Challenges became more frequent as the season progressed, and teams used them more often late in games. The results also show why frequency and success rate need to be read separately: a high number of appeals does not necessarily mean a higher chance of winning one.

Across the season, teams averaged 4.35 challenges per game, according to AP. The report said teams were less inclined to challenge early because two unsuccessful appeals could leave them without one later. But ninth-inning challenges were the most numerous and succeeded less often than challenges in innings 1–3. These are observed outcomes, not proof that a particular timing strategy caused a challenge to succeed or fail.
Why managers described a learning curve
Players had to recognize a pitch and decide immediately whether the call was wrong and worth challenging. Yankees manager Aaron Boone called it “a new muscle for players to learn.” Houston manager Joe Espada said ABS had “really impacted the game,” describing lineups as more selective and disciplined and pitchers as being pushed to attack the zone more.

Managers differed in how they talked about saving appeals. Atlanta manager Walt Weiss said, “You start talking about saving it for certain situations, it probably doesn’t end well. My message was the lower the leverage, the more certainty you have to have.” That is one manager’s approach, not a demonstrated rule for maximizing success. Padres manager Craig Stammen described continuing to discuss when the team had challenges and when a good opportunity arose.

AP reported that Cincinnati had the highest team challenge success rate, at 62%. It also reported a 16.8 net gain in run value from overturns for Cincinnati and minus 13.4 runs for Cleveland. AP attributed those run-value estimates to Baseball Savant. They are estimates of run value associated with overturns, not wins, and do not by themselves measure a team’s full performance or the overall effect of the system.
The postseason milestone
MLB’s 2026 announcement said the challenge format would apply in postseason games. AP reported that J.T. Realmuto’s successful challenge ended Game 2 of the Phillies’ 2026 NL Wild Card Series, the first game-ending ABS challenge in postseason history.
Why MLB chose challenges instead of automatic calls
MLB said the format reflected players’ strong preference for challenges over using the tracking system to call every pitch. Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. described that preference as a key factor in the decision. MLB presented the format as a way to correct disputed calls while retaining the umpire’s initial call and preserving game pace; that is the league’s stated rationale, rather than an independent evaluation of the system.
