In 2026, 12 MLB teams—six from each league—make the postseason. The American League Division Series (ALDS) is a best-of-five round: the first team to win three games advances. The two best-record division winners in each league receive a bye past the Wild Card Series, and the higher seed in each Division Series hosts Games 1, 2 and, if needed, 5.
How the 2026 MLB postseason bracket works
Each league sends six teams to the postseason: its three division champions and three Wild Card teams. The two division champions with the best regular-season records receive byes directly to the Division Series. The other four clubs play two best-of-three Wild Card Series.
MLB’s current bracket is fixed; teams are not reseeded after the Wild Card round. The matchups and paths are:

The higher seed hosts every game of its Wild Card Series. In each league’s Division Series bracket, the No. 1 seed faces the 4/5 winner, while the No. 2 seed faces the 3/6 winner. MLB’s 2026 format FAQ explains the current format.

How many games are in the ALDS?
The ALDS is a best-of-five series. The first team to win three games advances, so a series can end after three, four or five games. There are two Division Series in each league; the two American League winners move on to the American League Championship Series (ALCS).
What does 2-2-1 mean for ALDS home games?
The higher seed has home-field advantage under the Division Series’ 2-2-1 arrangement:

- The lower seed hosts Games 3 and 4.
- If the series reaches Game 5, the higher seed hosts it.
MLB describes the Division Series as a best-of-five in a 2-2-1 format, with home-field advantage going to the higher seed. The pattern identifies the scheduled host for each game; a series ends as soon as one team earns its third win. See MLB’s format explanation.
How the ALDS fits into the other postseason rounds
The postseason series lengths differ by round. The Wild Card Series is best-of-three, the Division Series is best-of-five, and both the League Championship Series and World Series are best-of-seven. After the ALDS, the two American League Division Series winners meet in the best-of-seven ALCS. Its winner advances to the best-of-seven World Series.

What changed historically?
The Division Series began in 1995, after MLB realigned to three divisions in each league. The current 12-team postseason arrangement began in 2022, when MLB added a third Wild Card team per league. Earlier seasons therefore had different paths and Wild Card structures; the 2026 bracket described here should not be applied automatically to older postseason formats. MLB’s 2026 schedule announcement lists possible ALDS Game 5s for Saturday, October 10, 2026. That is a schedule-specific date, not a permanent feature of the format; dates and broadcast assignments vary by season. Check the 2026 schedule announcement for that season’s calendar.
