Mike Flanagan’s Carrie keeps the story’s familiar core—Carrie White, bullying, telekinesis and the prom—while expanding it into an eight-episode television series and bringing online cruelty into the school’s social world. Amazon describes it as the first series adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 novel, rather than a remake of the influential 1976 Brian De Palma film. All eight episodes are scheduled to arrive on Prime Video on October 7, 2026.

What the series changes—and what it keeps

The clearest update is social media. Amazon’s official synopsis says Carrie must contend with a viral bullying scandal and the cruelty of a social-media age after leaving her sheltered home for public high school. The series retains the source story’s recognizable elements, including Carrie’s telekinetic powers and the prom, but its longer format makes room for more character relationships and the choices that build toward the catastrophe. Amazon’s series announcement describes those eight episodes as deepening characters and tensions.

That distinction matters: the show is based on King’s novel, not presented as a direct remake of De Palma’s film. The 1976 movie remains a natural point of comparison, but the series is working from the same underlying story in a different medium and at a different length.

A wider view of Carrie and the people around her

TV Insider’s preview characterizes Summer H. Howell’s Carrie as more curious than cowering, and Samantha Sloyan’s Margaret as less like the ranting caricature associated with the 1976 film. It also notes unexpected subplots, while making clear that their full effect was not yet apparent in the preview. These are the outlet’s interpretations, not official character descriptions. TV Insider’s preview offers an early sense of how the performances may shift familiar expectations.

GamesRadar’s review says the series expands characters including Chris and Margaret and adds a thread involving other women with telekinetic abilities. The Daily Beast describes changes to the White family history and a survivor-interview framing narrative. Those are plot details best left unspoiled; together, they show that the adaptation is not limiting itself to a contemporary backdrop for the original events.

How Flanagan is playing with audience expectations

Flanagan has said the project gives him a chance to make something new from material audiences may think they already know. In an August 2026 ComicBook.com interview, he challenged the assumption that viewers know how the prom sequence unfolds: “That’s the thing about Carrie. You know Carrie is going to the prom, but do you know how?” His point is not that the central story disappears, but that knowing its landmark event does not necessarily reveal how this version reaches it.

That approach gives the series two jobs: preserve the emotional and supernatural engine that makes Carrie recognizable, while using new material and a longer running time to make familiar events feel less predetermined. Whether those expansions work is a matter of taste, not a settled fact.

What reviewers think of the expansion

Critical responses in the available coverage are mixed rather than unanimous. GamesRadar praises the broader character work and contemporary bullying themes, but criticizes the finale and what it sees as setup for a possible future season. The Daily Beast regards the adaptation as both faithful and radical, while arguing that some departures change the familiar character of the story. These are individual reviews, not a consensus or an audience verdict.

The disagreement points to the main trade-off in expanding Carrie: additional subplots and social context can give the people around Carrie more dimension, but they can also compete with the tightening force of a story readers and filmgoers already associate with one devastating night.

How the three versions compare

Version Medium and scope What is established here
Stephen King’s Carrie 1974 novel The source for Flanagan’s series. Amazon says the novel spent 14 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and has been translated into more than 35 languages.
Brian De Palma’s Carrie 1976 feature film An influential earlier screen version and a point of comparison; it is not the adaptation’s stated source.
Mike Flanagan’s Carrie Eight-episode series Amazon’s synopsis confirms a viral bullying scandal and social-media-age cruelty; reviewers describe further character and plot expansion.

The evidence here supports comparing format, source and the series’ confirmed modernization; it does not establish a detailed scene-by-scene account of how the novel and film differ. Amazon also says King’s books overall have sold more than 350 million copies worldwide; that figure applies to his books as a whole, not to Carrie alone. Stephen King’s official site is a source for the author and his work.

Flanagan is showrunner, writer and executive producer, and directs episodes 101, 102, 107 and 108. Stephen King is also an executive producer, and Amazon MGM Studios produces the series. Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata direct episodes 103, 104, 105 and 106 respectively. These credits and the release schedule are listed in Amazon’s announcement.

Should you read the novel first?

No prior reading is needed to understand the series, based on the announced premise. King’s 1974 novel is the direct reading companion if you want to compare the adaptation with its source. Readers deciding whether to revisit De Palma’s film can treat it as an important earlier screen interpretation, while keeping in mind that Flanagan’s stated basis is King’s book.
