Microsoft announced its acquisition of Acompli on December 1, 2014, and the deal quickly became the foundation for a new Outlook experience on iOS and Android. Microsoft was buying more than an email app: it was adding Acompli’s mobile technology and team to accelerate cross-platform productivity, then combining that work with its existing Outlook development.

What Microsoft acquired on December 1, 2014

Microsoft described Acompli as a provider of mobile email applications for iOS and Android. Its announcement highlighted capabilities that were especially relevant to people working from phones and tablets:

  • Prioritizing important messages in the inbox
  • Scheduling meetings from email
  • Working with attachments and files

Rajesh Jha, Microsoft’s executive vice president for the Office Product Group, said the acquisition was part of “our company-wide effort to help people accomplish more with their mobile devices.” Microsoft also said it wanted to support the variety of email services people used, rather than limit mobile productivity to one account type.

The company’s announcement said it would build on Acompli’s application and bring that work together with development already under way on Outlook. That wording makes the transaction both a product acquisition and a team acquisition: Acompli supplied a functioning mobile experience, while its people and technology could shorten Microsoft’s path to a stronger mobile Outlook.

  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Why Acompli fit Microsoft’s mobile strategy

Microsoft was pursuing a cross-platform approach to productivity. Acompli already operated on Apple and Android devices, giving Microsoft a mobile email product outside the Windows ecosystem and an experienced team focused on phone-based workflows.

The strategic interpretation supported by Microsoft’s statements is acceleration. Buying an established app and its talent could move Microsoft toward a polished mobile email experience faster than building every component internally. The evidence does not establish a specific competitive motive beyond that broader productivity objective.

Microsoft’s 2014 announcement included the statement that “more than half of email messages are first read on a mobile device.” That was a figure Microsoft cited at the time, not an independently verified current measurement, so it should be read as period context rather than a present-day market statistic.

  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

The short path from Acompli to Outlook mobile

Date Event What it shows
December 1, 2014 Microsoft announces the Acompli acquisition. Microsoft connects the deal to cross-platform mobile productivity and says Acompli will be combined with Outlook work already in progress.
January 29, 2015 Microsoft launches Outlook for iOS and Android. The launch is based on the acquired Acompli application and technology; the Acompli team joins Outlook.
February 11, 2015 Microsoft announces its separate acquisition of Sunrise. Microsoft places Acompli and Sunrise in a wider effort covering mobile email and calendaring across platforms.
May 3, 2015 A Microsoft Ignite session discusses Outlook on mobile devices. The session description links Acompli’s acquisition to the expansion of Microsoft’s mobile email roadmap.

January 2015: Outlook becomes the visible result

On January 29, 2015, Microsoft launched Outlook for iOS and Android based on the Acompli application and technology. TechCrunch reported that the Acompli team had become a core part of the Outlook team. This is the clearest concrete outcome of the acquisition: within roughly two months, the acquired product had been turned into the basis of a Microsoft-branded mobile Outlook release.

The sources support “based on Acompli” and the team’s move into Outlook. They do not provide a code-level account of the integration or prove that every original Acompli feature was retained unchanged.

What the first Outlook mobile release supported

The January 2015 launch coverage described support for Office 365, Exchange, Outlook.com, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail and most other email providers. Those were launch-era claims, not a current compatibility list. Microsoft’s stated goal was to make Outlook useful across the mixture of services people already used.

  • Hands-Free Made Easy: Easily turn your PopSocket into a phone stand to prop up your phone anywhere, perfect for watching videos, video calls, or following recipes. A must-have phone holder that keeps your device secure and ready for anything.
  • Compatibility: Works with all phones, tablets, and Kindles. Sticks best to smooth, hard plastic cases and may not adhere to silicone or textured cases. Easily swap your PopTop to change up your style.

  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

That provider breadth mattered strategically. A mobile client that handled only Microsoft-hosted mail would have limited reach; an app designed for multiple services could serve existing Outlook users while also attracting people whose primary accounts were hosted elsewhere.

How Sunrise extended the same direction

Microsoft announced the acquisition of Sunrise, a mobile calendar app, on February 11, 2015. In that announcement, Microsoft grouped the recent Acompli acquisition with its ambition to rethink productivity, mobile email and calendaring across platforms.

Sunrise was not another email acquisition or a direct alternative to Acompli. Its relevance is organizational: email and calendar were being treated as connected mobile productivity problems. Acompli addressed the inbox and message workflow; Sunrise addressed scheduling and calendar coordination.

Purchase price

TechCrunch reported a price of $200 million in its January 2015 launch coverage. Microsoft’s official announcement and the acquisition-history record do not verify that figure, so it should be treated as a contemporaneous report rather than a disclosed official term.

Current standalone Acompli availability

The documented sequence ends with the 2015 Outlook launch and later mobile-roadmap references. These sources do not establish whether Acompli remains available today as a separate application. They do establish that its application and technology became the basis for Outlook on iOS and Android.

How much of Acompli survived

The record supports a product lineage and a team integration, not a feature-by-feature preservation claim. Microsoft combined Acompli’s work with Outlook development; the available sources do not say that every screen, feature or implementation was carried over.

Why the acquisition mattered

Acompli gave Microsoft a credible starting point for mobile email on two major platforms and a team already focused on inbox management, attachments and scheduling. Microsoft then used that foundation for a rapid Outlook launch, preserving the Outlook brand while expanding its reach beyond Microsoft’s own operating-system history.

In practical terms, the acquisition changed the question from “How will Microsoft build a mobile email client?” to “How quickly can Microsoft turn an acquired mobile client into Outlook?” The January 2015 release supplied the answer: very quickly, with Acompli’s technology and people at the center of the effort.
