A battery may help supply that power, but it is only one part of the system—not a stand-alone promise of community-wide backup.
What a microgrid does during a grid disruption
The U.S. Department of Energy defines a microgrid as interconnected electricity loads and local energy resources operating within clearly defined electrical boundaries. It can connect to the wider grid under normal conditions or operate independently in an islanded mode when the grid is unavailable or when the microgrid is directed to disconnect. DOE’s overview of microgrid systems describes the system as controllable, able to use local resources to meet demand, and coordinated by controls that manage resources, loads, and electricity delivery.
In practical terms, the boundary and controls matter as much as the equipment. When a disruption affects the main grid, the microgrid must separate safely, then manage the generation and stored energy available inside its boundary. It can serve the loads its design prioritizes; it does not necessarily keep every building or appliance running.
How batteries and local generation fit together
Solar supplies power when conditions allow
Solar photovoltaic panels can produce electricity locally. Their contribution depends on sunlight and system configuration, so solar output alone should not be treated as a guaranteed supply through every outage or weather condition. DOE discusses solar as one resource that can support resilient distribution systems and local service. DOE’s solar-powered resilient distribution systems overview

Batteries shift some energy to a later time
A battery can store electricity and discharge it when generation is insufficient or when the microgrid is islanded. Its useful duration depends on the storage system, available generation, and the loads being served. The cited DOE material does not establish a standard battery runtime or a guaranteed outage duration for a remote community. Storage duration is therefore a design question, not a universal specification. DOE’s solar and resilience basics
Controls coordinate supply and demand
Microgrid controls coordinate available resources with demand and manage delivery within the system. They are what make a collection of local resources and loads operate as a system that can transition between grid-connected and islanded modes. A battery product on its own is not equivalent to that bounded, controllable arrangement.

Why remote communities need site-specific planning
Remote and island communities may depend on a single power source or on interconnected systems, leaving them vulnerable when those systems are disrupted. NREL’s 2023 Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project announcement described distinct local challenges among participating communities:
- Stonington, Maine: NREL reported outages lasting up to a week.
- Nooksack Tribe, Washington: NREL reported that winter outages could require emergency shelters.
- Molokai, Hawaii: planning considered solar for critical infrastructure and pumped hydropower as a storage option.
These are place-specific examples reported by NREL in 2023, not general outage statistics or evidence that the proposed projects were completed. The program offered tailored resilience assessment and planning rather than one standard design. NREL’s 2023 announcement

Questions to answer before choosing a design
A community’s priorities and local conditions determine whether a microgrid, storage, generation, or a combination is suitable. Planning should answer these questions:
- Which loads are critical? Identify the services that must remain available, rather than assuming all demand can be supported.
- How long must those loads be served? The required duration affects the amount and type of generation and storage to plan for.
- What local resources are available? Consider potential generation and storage alongside the community’s existing energy systems.
- How will the system connect and island? The design must account for its electrical boundary, transition between operating modes, and the controls needed to coordinate resources and loads.
- How might conditions change? Weather, demand growth, and the state of the existing grid affect system planning.
- Would one microgrid or coordination among several serve the community better? The right scale depends on local needs and the systems being coordinated.

What coordinating multiple microgrids may add
DOE described a tool for coordinating multiple solar-plus-storage microgrids in a November 8, 2023 account. The agency said the approach could help maintain reliable service and integrate more solar, and potentially other renewable resources. It may also reduce reliance on diesel generators, costs, and harmful emissions. Those are potential outcomes described by DOE, not independently measured or guaranteed results for every deployment. DOE’s November 8, 2023 account of the multi-microgrid tool
What a microgrid cannot promise by definition
Calling a system a microgrid does not establish how long it can run during an outage, how much it costs, or how much resilience it will provide. Outcomes depend on configuration, available generation, storage, controls, and the loads selected for service. The cited sources do not establish a representative remote-community battery runtime, project cost, quantified resilience improvement, or universal technology comparison.

For an individual home or small site, a consumer battery may support some essential loads if it is appropriately configured. That is a different scale and purpose from a community microgrid, which coordinates resources and loads within defined electrical boundaries. DOE’s material supports the general role of local solar and battery resources in resilience; it does not endorse a particular retail backup product.
