In a self-custodial wallet, you control the recovery credentials and decide what to approve. A Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) can restore the accounts derived from it; a password’s role depends on how the wallet was set up; alerts can be overridden; and on-chain transactions generally cannot be reversed.
What MetaMask security does—and does not—mean
MetaMask offers safeguards around wallet access and transaction decisions. It can check a website or request for known risks, and a compatible hardware wallet can require a physical signing step. Neither protection guarantees that a site, contract, signature, or user decision is safe.
The key distinction is control: MetaMask is self-custodial. You are responsible for protecting the credentials that grant access and for deciding what to sign or authorize. MetaMask says it cannot restore missing funds after an irreversible on-chain loss.
How recovery credentials and passwords work
Secret Recovery Phrase setup
For a wallet created with an SRP, the phrase is the master recovery credential for the accounts derived from it. Anyone who obtains it can control those accounts. MetaMask advises writing it down and keeping it in a secure physical location rather than in an internet-connected cloud file. Never share it, including with someone claiming to be support. In this setup, the MetaMask password unlocks local access on that device; it is not a substitute for the SRP. If you lose access to the device, restoring the wallet requires the phrase.
Google, Apple, or Telegram setup
MetaMask also documents a setup using a linked Google, Apple, or Telegram account. In that flow, the SRP is generated and backed up in encrypted shards, and access depends on the linked account and MetaMask password. This is a different recovery arrangement from an SRP-based setup, so do not assume every MetaMask user has the same credentials or recovery path. Review MetaMask’s current instructions before changing or recovering a wallet.

SRP versus an individual account private key
Each account derived from an SRP has its own private key. The SRP restores the accounts derived from it; exporting one account’s private key only gives control of that particular account. The two credentials are not interchangeable backups.
What security alerts and trust signals can tell you
MetaMask trust signals can help match a token, address, or website with a recognized identity. A Verified badge is not an endorsement or a safety guarantee, and the absence of a badge does not by itself mean something is malicious.

When security alerts are enabled, MetaMask says requests are checked using sources such as known phishing domains, scam reports, contract behavior, transaction patterns, impersonation signals, and ecosystem reports. Its help article says EVM activity is checked through MetaMask and non-EVM activity through Blockaid. A transaction simulation may reveal a possible loss of funds, but it will not detect every threat. MetaMask puts the limitation plainly: “Security alerts are designed to inform your decision — MetaMask does not prevent you from proceeding with a transaction.” See How to manage security alerts to protect your wallet.
MetaMask says security checks can send the dapp URL, JSON-RPC method, chain ID, and transaction data to MetaMask or its security partner. It says SRPs, private keys, and other credentials are not shared with security providers. Alert classifications can change as threat information is updated.

How a hardware wallet changes the risk
A hardware wallet keeps keys away from the computer and requires you to interact with the device to approve a transaction. This adds a physical barrier against someone who gains access to MetaMask on the computer alone moving assets secured by the device. It does not make a deceptive transaction safe: if you approve a harmful request, the hardware wallet can sign it.
MetaMask lists Ledger, Trezor, and Lattice among direct-connection devices for Extension, and also documents air-gapped options. Its guide lists Keystone, Ledger, and NGRAVE ZERO for Mobile. Compatibility can change, so check MetaMask’s current hardware wallet guidance for your platform and model before buying or connecting a device.

Common ways a MetaMask wallet can be compromised
MetaMask identifies several routes attackers may use. Alerts cannot eliminate these risks, and a hardware wallet does not prevent a user from authorizing a harmful action.
- Phishing: A fake website may imitate a dapp or MetaMask and trick you into revealing credentials or approving a malicious request.
- Fake support: An impersonator may ask for your SRP or private key while pretending to help. Those credentials grant wallet access.
- Malicious software or fake extensions: Malware may retrieve stored private information, while a counterfeit extension can expose credentials or transactions.
- Risky approvals: An unlimited contract approval can give a contract permission to move tokens. Review what a request authorizes instead of treating a familiar site or token as proof that it is safe.
MetaMask says it has no support phone number. Use the Contact Support option reached through its official Help Center; do not trust an unsolicited message or search ad that asks you to disclose recovery credentials. MetaMask’s security advice is collected in Basic security tips for MetaMask users.
What to do if you suspect a compromise
Act promptly, but do not assume that any step will recover funds already taken. MetaMask’s incident guidance recommends moving remaining assets if possible and stopping use of accounts associated with the compromised SRP. If you suspect your device or browser profile is compromised, create a new wallet on a separate browser profile or device. If the old wallet relies on a linked Google or Apple account that may be compromised, avoid using that account for the new setup.
MetaMask cautions against adding more gas funds if a sweeper script may be present, because it could immediately take incoming funds. Follow the current steps in I’ve been hacked or scammed (unauthorized transactions on my account) and report the scam through the appropriate channel. MetaMask cannot reverse transactions or restore missing funds.
